Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

Apologies for my promptness in putting this up, as there is still a lot to discuss on the Down thread, but I wanted to open a new thread to - if possible - prevent the Down thread becoming a 2019 Championship Super Thread.

For me, this will bring back memoris of our victory over them at the semi-final stage in 2004 as we started out on the road to three-in-a-row in Ulster. My recollection of that game was that they had a man sent off early on and that we seemed to take our foot off the pedal and think we could coast to victory. Cavan responded well and the match became a real arm wrestle, and I remember it was the introduction of Brian Mallon (was that a Senior Championship debut?) with two late points that sealed victory, in front of a crown of over 28,000.

I watched the Cavan v Monaghan game on Saturday evening and I thought it was clear that Cavan had been building up to that game from a long way out, and that Monaghan were caught out badly by the intensity of the Cavan approach. Cavan were also helped by a very generous penalty and that goal was important in the context of the match as Monaghan threatened a comeback but could not get nearer than three points. My sense is that that was a bit of a final for Cavan and my hope is that they will take us for granted.

On the flip side, we squeezed through in a thriller without playing particularly well and with plenty to work on. Although Cavan will be justifiable favourites, they should represent no fears to our fells and there is no reason why we can't go toe-to-toe with them and come out on the right side of a victory.

Cavan will be Favorites and I think that it will suit us , They were very economical but Monaghan had plenty of chances to score . They are not playing the blanket as much but have a talent in McKiernan and having been playing at a higher standard than us . In saying that they are well organised with a tactical manager , if we run into as many blind alleys as we did yesterday they will eat us up and hit us on the break .

However the main target for us should be the kick out , they were poor and we should push up , we need to win a lot more breaking ball in around the middle yesterday when we won it in the last 10 mins in extra time we looked dangerous .

Cavan will have noticed the vulnerability at the back , we have a big problem with the high ball into the square , this has been ongoing , maybe dropping charlie back and donaghy sweeping in front may be an option , Blaine is not a natural keeper he has been converted so he need better communication between the goalkeeper and full back line .

The game is very winnable but we need to improve Cavan are a better team than Down , I think we have better scoring power . Rian is a great talent but he will be noticed yesterday so others will need to step up as well .

I remember playing Cavan in Clones in 2004 they were missing McCabe as well we were lucky to beat them , also in our last 2008 title we played them in Breffini another tight game , it will be another 1-2 point game i think .

Cavan were able to put 2/3 men on Manus as monaghans other main scorer was injured. If they do that to Rian it should in theory give us more space for Clarke or Soupy to make use of

Watched the BBC highlights of the game this morning Rufus and I was thinking the same as you that the goal may have fortuitous until the showed a different angle ad there was clearly a push with Beagan committed studs up. If he had of made contact he may have been dismissed and that would have been severe as he's a very honest player. I'd have no issues from that saying the penalty was correct, but as you rightly say it was the main score in the game giving Cavan a missive boost which Monaghan just couldn't recover from.

Cavan defence from the highlights looked excellent with some great dispossessions and turn overs. They'll hurt us. Looks like McManus didn't score from play and that takes serious talent as in my opinion, he's up there.

Too often they've given us what for. This is our time to push on and with Rian O'Neill and Jarly Og added I have no doubt that we have the right new talent. Add to that returning players from injury and we get better.

Would put Hughes into half back line instead of Forker or Donaghy,.
Would start Oisin ONeill instead of Grugan.
Hall wouldnt even be on the bench. Id have Jason Duffy coming on.

Might need Oisin O'Neill or Crealy to compete in midfield with McKiernan.
Might Murnin be fit to start?
Keep Soupy in reserve until last 20 mins?

.

Just wanna correct you Blaine is a natural keeper. Played nets for St Paul’s high school throughout his time there, has won an All Ireland medal with them, has also played nets for Armagh underage development squads, minors, u21 now seniors. Has also done nets for Warrenpoint soccer club whenever they where in the Irish league.

Ye'd hardly start Oisin? He's barely played club football this year.
Have to disagree re, hughes. Id have forker & donaghy ahead of him everyday of the week. J.Johnston roasted him yday.

Yes through. Oisins physical strength will be needed for Cavan.
Like to see soupy start and Duffy coming on. Duffy a serious footballer. Has pace, strength and can score. Offers far more than Grugan and Hall put together.

That’s why I’d play Hughes at wing back. He’s not a natural man marker and would be excellent coming forward at pace. Can also score.
I’d start Oisin for the strength around the middle

Apparently he played for cross against maghery last week and had a great game.

Armagh seem to have some good young forwards coming through which is hopeful. Surely Ross McQuillan is up there with the likes of Rian O'Neill. Both players have great potential.

Ross MC Quillan has yet to be really tested at intercounty level , and although a good footballer, too much talk about him is only putting uncalled pressure on him, time will tell.
