Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

Extremely poor defensive performance, especially from the halfback line. Cavan had way too many easy shots, and at this level those easy shots are going to be points.

One of the only positives today was Jamie Clarke. That was his best game in an Armagh jersey in probably 5 years. Singlehandedly brought Armagh back into the game in the 2nd half.

After five seasons in charge mcgeeney has a 14% win ratio in Ulster. If it wasn’t clear 4 years ago it has to be clear now. He couldn’t win anything with a very good Kildare team and he can’t win any meaningful games with this Armagh team which is without a doubt been underperforming given the talent it’s got. Clearly can’t cut it in management it’s time to go. Anyone who stands behind him and supports him now clearly doesn’t have the best interests of Armagh gaa at heart because this man is holding the county back.

The negativity surrounding the management is soul destroying at times to be honest.

Ciaran Whelan spoke on The Sunday Game about how much better a team Armagh were this year. They didn't improve without the input of the Management.

Armagh had a decent year in Division Two, a few 1/2 point swings in a few games and the end result for the campaign could have been very different.

New players in to the mix, identified by management, have played their part. Lads are very quick to call out players who they believe shouldn't have started and are off the pace, but at the end of the day, the management team are picking the best 15 from what they see in training week in and week out and some lads can just have a bad day at the office.

Players and Management are human too and it's easy to criticise from the santuary of the stands by beating a keyboard. When all is said and done, the lads on the field and the men on the line, who bleed Orange and White, like us, want nothing more than the success we are starved of.

If Kieran is to be gone at the end of the year, it could be very much a case of 'better the devil you know...'

Define "meaningful".
Surely every game in the league is meaningful up to the point when you've secured your position in current division, secured promotion or suffered relegation. All games in the Championship are meaningful, you're always striving to get to the next round in the hopes of eventually competing in a Provincial final. As for the qualifiers, lose & you're out, county football over until January or possibly December if the Ulster Council take the head staggers, fairly meaningful wouldn't you think?!?!
To be totally pedantic about it I would go as far as to say every match played is meaningful, challenge matches included. Players are constantly trying to improve their game, reduce mistakes, play for a place on the starting 15, hone their skills. Management are working on tactics, different methods of play, watching players, trying to ascertain their strengths & weaknesses, deciding on positions, giving players a chance to prove themselves & no doubt numerous other things I have failed to mention.
If matches were totally meaningless we'd struggle to get the players & management teams to give the dedication & commitment required year after year & supporters just wouldn't bother going to games.
It seems strange that supposedly meaningless matches generate so much debate on here, both positive & negative..........

Anyway next up is the draw in the morning & personally this next match will be just as meaningful as today's match, if not moreso, as we've now entered last chance saloon.

Disappointing but I thought Cavan were excellent. We have no sense of game management and no ruthless streak. Like so many of our league games (Kildare / Clare / Meath / cork) we get ourselves in a position to push on and win mid way through the second half yet don't follow through. Frustrating how we continually allowed Cavan to get their kick outs away.

Clarke is a footballing genius and a pleasure to watch. O'Neill and Campbell were also excellent

Donaghy was a major loss. I can't understand why McKay and McCabe aren't starting.

I thought to start Paddy burns on mcveety was strange considering he has had very little football under his belt. Very disappointing to see him pull out of a tackle late on. Someone needs to tell him to stop acting like a d**k on the pitch and that he's not playing for Tyrone.

Regarding Vernon, he has never been, is not and never will be a county standard footballer. Not as a half forward, midfielder, half back or full back. A lot of eejits on here picking him as a captain. Bizarre. He's keeping a jersey from someone.

I've really liked Nugent in the first 2 championship games but he seemed more interested in getting involved in verbals today. Allowed moynagh to gather a few kick outs.

As others have said when we missed the Goal chances the writing was on the wall , Cavan took their chances well and were very clinical , I wouldn’t be totally writing them off against Donegal just yet all but would fancy Donegal to get a couple of goals against them , they don’t create to many goal scoring opportunities but Donegal can’t take them for granted they have a steely resolve,

As for us the next main evidence for me is that is a lack of belief in the team , giving up big leads and chasing down teams big leads and not kicking on , even JC probably the most confident players in his ability started the game shakily and passed the ball when he should have shot twice underlines this . Rian and him kept us in the game but and Rian done the opposite at times shot when he should have gone passed but he’s only young and will learn thank god he with us for a long talk time .

Jarly og a lot quieter but needed a dig out from Grimley who has been quiet since the injury , defense giving away far too much space P Burns needs to be quiet , if he was as good defending as mouthing he would have an All Star , needs to learn from his club mate Jemar who never stops trying and as honest as they come and puts himself about even though he up against fellas twice his size .

Murnin clearly not fit which is a shame , soupy done really well when brought in but I would back the decision to keep him in reserve I think there are players that are better as impact off the bench and he is one of these .

All is not lost but there are some big hitters left in the qualifiers so the road to the super 8 s is a long hard one
