2020 season - write off?

Probably early days but I like many others was looking forward to the start of the club season. Obviously the likelihood of the 2020 season being completed in full is quite low. Any suggestions on how the season should be finished? Championship only? 1 round of league games? No relegation/promotion? Let’s say for arguments sake this covid19 passes and GAA activities are given the green light for end of May/June. How should things go at club level?

Doubt there will be any football unless the league and champ are reverted to autumn/winter football and then a couple of months break before going into 2021 season.

Maybe a quirky suggestion, but IF the leagues get the green light, I guess depending on when that is, then they could "go" from whatever game was already in the pipeline for that week/end, continue as planned already and then just tag on to the end, the missed games from the start, in the order they were to be played without any breaks. Not sure if that's even a sensible suggestion, but I'm guessing like everyone else, I think football is low down on the list of priorities right now, but I still think about it, so it could be a good relief to get news it's gonna go. There'd be no need for a break and would run straight to the championship which could be run off week after week with no back door this year and it'd finish when it finishes.

Big sacrifices would be made so that the counties could complete as much as possible too which is theoretically possible like rugby do - internationals and provincials run at the same time. I know it's not apples with apples, but you get where I'm coming from.

In these difficult times we need a feel good factor and looking ahead positively could be a great start for our mental wellbeing - I've had almost two weeks in the house and have invented all sorts of contraptions to "stun" runts that want to burgle the elderly. I need out!!

I reckon if the will to do it is out there you could run the provincial and AI championship off in 6 weeks. Back to back weeks, no replays provincial winner goes into AI semi. It would be glorious.

I have to agree fully and there can't be excuses like "well that's not the way we do it now!!" Like you say, if the will is there. These are different times and takes a little thinking out of the box to give give us'ns something to get caught up in.

Would the GAA risk running off a quick knockout AI competition though?

If it’s a great success, their plan for tier 2 would be banjaxed. Support would grow for an open draw.

They can always cite extraordinary circumstances. There can't be any excuses, just solutions to a problem, "if the will is there!"

Yeah but if you had the likes of Antrim beating Kildare at home, Carlow beating Donegal, Or Wexford beating Monaghan, it would show that lower teams can compete. Especially at home in a do or die match.

The whole idea for tier 2 if that the GAA say Div 3/4 teams can’t compete. An open draw like this might upset the GAA’s thinking.

You might have Antrim or Carlow reaching a QF/semi if the draw was kind. And teams ranked 8-16 saying, hang on... Dublin and Kerry are out... we could feckin’ win this!

Hmmmmmm! Are you sure you don't work in the GAA strategy dept? Sounds mightily like an excuse to me - NO excuses!! It'd be a "one-off" feel good experience! :p

If I worked for the GAA strategy department, I’d be thrown into the back of a big van in the middle of the night.

Lol yes there’s always the risk it would work too well and be hugely popular, imagine that.

Personally love the idea of an open draw intercounty championship, 32 teams into a hat.... You could run it off in 7 weeks... and gives smaller counties a chance if they get the luck of the draw... It would be highly exciting and unique, but these are unique times.

Wk 1- 32 teams
Wk 2- 16 teams
Wk 3- 8 teams
Wk 5- 4 teams
Wk 7- final

3 weeks team prep.... 10 weeks in total. In theory if the green light was given at the start of August it could be played off by mid October...

I suspect it will be a last resort unfortunately, due to the Gaa's focus on revenue and honoring TV and commercial deals already in place :-(

All very interesting but I thought this forum was for club football
We set out from the very start that there were no problems with off topic subjects on the forum. It will always be better if threads stick to the headlining opener, but as long as it's topical, members agreed at the start not to get worried about things like that. It caused too much friction on the official forum with too many trying to police it. If a post is of no interest, scroll by. Saves any issues.

Cabin fever starting to hit. Imagine what I will be like in another week

Take it one day at a time. Plan tonight what you are doing tomorrow. Don’t think beyond that.

Plan your meals, exercise times etc. Keep to a routine if possible. If you have a dog, that will need walking, or a garden/greenhouse needs tending to.
