Coronavirus and the GAA

You’ve no excuse now, boyo! ;)

And no cheating! You have to use nail scissors.
Fair play to ya Patrick. I'll upgrade immediately. These nose hair jabbies I was using were gonna take an eternity. Thank goodness the mrs made me restrict the lawn to only 1.5 acres when we were building. If I'd have gotten my way with the full 9 acres...................

I'm not sure the new Antrim kit to allow their lads to restart their campaigns will catch on or even be legal for competition. There's no O'Neill's branding!

I think it's time to reopen and get back to normality.
In Ireland there is a population of say 7million people
Currently there are c. 30000 cases with around 2000 unfortunate deaths. Over 300,000 tests have taken place.
Based on these figures that's 0.04% and 0.003% of the population
Based on these figures 93% recover of those who get it and if we were to drill down into the figures a large number of deaths are in a certain age group

We all know now the symptoms, social distancing, increased hygiene etc and as the experts are now saying there may not be a vaccine, it may not work for all, and so on over 90% of the population are under lock down with increased mental health problems, domestic violence, social and economic issues when it now appears that's not as necessary.

We all realise now that governments wabt/need to get people out and moving again be it working, meeting people etc..
I believe we need to move this faster and get people back to normal
The news is full of negative, negative news about a very, very small percentage of people. Start talking about those who have recovered, those tested and didn't need hospital treatment.
Start opening playing pitches to allow GAA, soccer, rugby, hockey etc out to play. If someone is not feeling well they don't go.
We have to live with this, just like HIV, and other diseases. We learn the symptoms, the precautions and we move on with life
The social, mental health and economic costs over the next decade are going to be huge with the mental health issues being the next unseen disaster.
The GAA has done well during these few months but I do feel they now need to open up grounds, with protocols, and as public confidence increases (and it will do quickly) especially as we see events around the world taking place we will be back playing, back to school, back to work and so on
We will be ordering more online, a few less shops and pubs but other new opportunities will rise. There will be a greater emphasis on health in all its various forms as well as working from home ( on a part time basis at least) and with grand parents out of bounds the norm of 2 people going to work may well change. Remote learning, video conferencing, IT support and learning and many, many more will commence.
It has been an unprecedented time but we must move on

30,000 is hardly a figure to be sniffed at @JoeH . Had the lockdown not occurred, that 30,000 could have been 300,000 or a million.

HIV is a different matter. That involved sharing needles, sex with infected people etc. This virus is transmitted by breathing or touching things, things every single one of us do. So, we’re all at risk.

If we’re coming out of these lockdowns, it’s going to be a tricky thing to work out. We can’t just all rush out the door and go mental with a big rave, and chuck our bottles of hand sanitizer over the hedge.

One step at a time. If that means no football for another while, so be it.

Wile I agree with what you get at @PatMustard with rushing out for a big rave, I doubt if that would happen even if it was allowed.
The HIV thing is used widely at the minute by the WHO and their reference is to the fact that it took over 20 years to develop effective drugs to deal with it. Not comparing them as similar diseases. The WHO have conceded that a vaccine may never be found that is the golden key to unlock this, so if we were to go by what some - including some on here, have suggested, then going back to work, school and recreation will never happen again.

I've seen many posts on social media with a picture of a burning building and a strap line something like "The fire is dying down so it's time to go back in the building!" Again another incorrect analogy. Everyone that stayed in the building or caught in it would die. That's 100% mortality from the blaze. Highly specialised equipment is used to fight the fire and even the professionals wouldn't re-enter when it's still alight.

This pandemic is more accurately described as a large storm. Everyone caught in the storm or enters into the eye will get wet. Some will dry out quickly and others will take much longer. Many will be struck by the lightening and some of those will die, while others will survive without reason or explanation. Some will be hit by flying debris from the winds and again most will survive, but not all.

Yet there will be those that have to venture into the storm for the good of others and maybe get caught up in the flood that follows. Eventually as the storm subsides more will venture out, even though they will still risk getting wet although they carry an umbrella.

Not one life is worth losing or risking for sport. On that we all agree, but sadly some PLAYING or PARTICIPATING in our games have died and got seriously injured over the years, because there is an inherent risk in all contact and physical sport. However we do what we can to negate those risks and carry on, not merely say "STOP until the goalposts no longer become a risk", "STOP until the heart attacks can be cured"........... All this can be levelled at work as well. Do we suspend that forever? The only ones that will argue "yes" are those that get paid regardless of whether they are currently working - if teachers pay was reduced by 50% and then 75% (as an example) would they be so keen at the minute to not have schools reopen or would they quickly formulate a plan to make it safely happen? Look at how the MLA's behaved when they had a 3 year holiday on full pay and no incentive to return!!

Some of the worlds greatest scientific and medical brains say it is feasible to be safe and get back moving again using a little bit of creative thinking and adequate precautions. Not one single expert dissenter has said they are wrong. In areas across the world it is already beginning to happen and we're only at most a week or two behind them, but let's play devils advocate and say four to six. That means preparing now to restart work etc in July or towards mid/late August.

I don't believe our games will resume this year. Not because they can't, but because we will be too scared to take the chance that someone (however connected) will become seriously ill or even die. Because of that and regardless of what I have posted above, I feel that that would be the correct decision. Sport is sport, life is real! Yeah we only live once and gotta make the most of it, but we only die once and that's forever, unless of course you're Michael Jackson and are frozen until medical science can bring you back!

PS I've 60,000 litres of sanitiser I need to shift before the hedges get too high if you know anyone looking some. I'll take £1 per litre. You know this is genuine because I spelled it litre and not liter like those damn stupid yankies - and don't start me on metre/meter!

Given the current figures on the island we urgently need to move to getting our walking tracks open and small organised & supervised training sessions where the current social distancing is in play.

Time we moved on
There will be no 2nd peak. Remember from December to March we were not washing hands, staying at home, keeping apart
The entire world is aware of this now and we know the major symptoms now and what to do to minimise chances of getting it.
From here on in it will be isolation and disinfection

In the south they are keen to move items from stage 3 to stage 2 and the 1 metre debate is ongoing
The north needs to move through its steps and get to 2 or 3 by end of June.

Next weeks figures will show what's happened since May 18th but so far it's looking good.
We can't wait for rugby or soccer to open ahead of us
We all need our sport for participation and watching.
