Armagh U17s/U20s

With the U17 Ulster Minor/U17 League underway, maybe we might have a discussion on their prospects. Admin can advise on whether we may actually name players or not?

I also gather that we have a good U20 squad. The aim is obviously to have this replace minor as the showpiece underage level. Maybe we have a chance of an Ulster Final if things go our way.

I had hoped to attend the U17 match against Down on Friday 16th of March to see how the boys were performing but unfortunately it was postponed due to bad weather (now there's something unheard of recently!!) & i was unable to attend the refixture.

I would have no idea of who is in the squad or what teams they are draeing from but would be hoping we have a fairly strong squad given we had 2 Armagh schools represented in the McCrory Cup semi final & St. Ronan's winning the final, I'm assuming some of these boys would be eligible. Good win today against Cavan :)

Not sure what to expect this year for U17 & U20, it would be nice to be competing for Ulster titles.

We understand the reasoning behind not naming young players on the grounds of child protection and would like to respect those that fall under the category. I know that U17 is different from U18, but once they are in the squad and named in programmes, then good natured discussion will be fine. As long as everyone keeps the comments sensible and not using personal details or giving them a thrashing which is stupid anyway, then as usual it's a members forum and the rules are entirely up to the users. Self regulation is what we aim for. If a post goes outside what we deem acceptable we will temporarily remove the message and PM the poster to explain why we think it shouldn't be on the thread and hope this is acceptable to all.

We'd also go as far as saying that comments like "xxxxxx" played well for the U17s on Saturday against "yyyyyyyy" and looks like a prospect for the future. A great player from "zzzzzzzz" club etc. You know the type of thing.

We'd genuinely be interested in hearing the views of members on this and if they feel this is fair and appropriate. Thank you for raising it before making comments.

By the way, U17s won well against Down last Wednesday evening and also beat Cavan well on Saturday after having a bad start against Monaghan the week before. Young lad in corner forward played well I believe and is maybe from Ballyhegan. Also a lad in midfield possibly from Silverbridge, with a great long kick. Don't have any other details at the minute sadly.

Youve just given your perception of a player who could 15 or 16 years of age from Silverbridge which I think is very lazy in thought. Young people are very impressionable and on an open forum where you dont have to be a member to read posts I think rules need to be in place to ensure that childrens sporting prowess is upheld.
Look at the amount of abuse arguably the best forward in Ireland is getting, Paddy McBrearty, for a shot that dropped short. (There were 13 (ironically) of his colleagues between him and his teams goalkeeper )
Guidance is required

That's very true and indeed as you say a perception. You've noticed that this is an open forum where anything is up for discussion and I did mention child protection issues, something which in my professional life I'm extremely aware of. If you wish to discuss what is acceptable and what isn't I'm more than happy to discuss that in private, but I will publicly say this, even a teacher may refer to a child of 10 years of age as "lazy" in certain circumstances. It's not derogatory nor offensive and in fact can be used to encourage a change to what may simply be a habit. Many many times you will hear "that's a very lazy tackle!"

Being aware of these issues I agree abusive posts would not be tolerated, but the PC crowd have their place and this forum will not be ruled by them. It's a forum which the members can control. If you feel it should be locked down and only those logged in may read and post, we will take that on board and consider it. Just a small point though. We don't nor won't ask for age identity so those same people can simply sign up and read away to their hearts content.

In order to help things, I've edited the post.

Yes and hopefully there's a big crowd heading to Newry tonight for this one. This is our future stars and need as much support as the big boys!

I will be there cheering them on :) It's a shame this competition has been completely separated from the senior championship, there is no doubt it will have an impact on the attendance figures.
