Your sport achievement

I’m sorry you started this thread now, Bull. These boys are making the rest of us feel rather inadequate, so they are.

(I better make up some sporting achievements... and fast!)

My proudest sporting moment coincides with my most humiliating. When I lived in the US, I played a lot of basketball. I was out of my depth most of the time, but I had a good leap and my pride and joy was that I was able to dunk a basketball-but I had never actually done this during an actual 5 on 5 game. That was until one fateful Sunday morning when I got pulled into in a scrimmage at the local rec centre and found myself facing two star players from the local U of Arizona college team who had ambled in to check things out. For the record, they were Reggie Geary and Joseph Blair-both of whom were later signed to the NBA. I was so seriously, seriously out of my depth, but I didn't want to pass up on the opportunity to take part.
My big moment came when I intercepted a sloppy pass from a distracted Blair (I don't think he realized I was playing) and then it happened-at last, I scored with a dunk! In my head it was glorious and I expected to hear the chirps of acknowledge/praise from my team. Nothing-except for my friend who looked at me, shook his head and said, 'dude, that was a mistake'. After that, Blair and Geary rained hell on me. The worst moment came when Blair (all 6ft 11 inches of him) put me on my arse under the basket and while I was lying there, slammed the ball through the hoop for it to bounce off the top of my head. I had to gather myself up and collect the ball to restart the game. Blair followed me to the ball and sized up on me, pushing his face into mine. He was 6 ft 11 inches, built like a tank and I will always remember the whites of his eyes glowering down on me. Like, what the feck was I going to do? Suddenly he let out a big grin and said 'dunking is no fun unless you got someone to dunk on!' and gave me a high five.

Class story. Loving it. Kind of fond of basketball, but don't tell 'bull. He might work out where I got one of my all Ireland awards!

Great story. The image of that dunk bouncing off your head is just priceless. I’d say it bloody hurt though!

Loved basketball in school. Didn’t have a team though. We used to play 3 a side games in PE, winner stays on. Myself and two good mates were almost unbeatable together. Good times.

I suppose that’s about the height of my basketball achievements!

Great story @pablo. Love basketball myself and we played it a lot in Cross in the winter. Played a bit in the Ulster league as well and have the great privilege to have played on the same team as my eldest son for a season. Proud moment that!

Loved basketball also. My school didn't have a team either but I was introduced to it by my PE teacher who played with a local club and encouraged me to come along to their Monday night sessions at the old Brownlow Recreation Centre. I remember the then current Armagh players Jim McCorry and Kieran McNally used to play those evenings also. Played a lot when I went to the US. Bit intimidating at first but always easy to find a pick up game. 3 on 3 was my favourite; an intense way to hone the basic skills and a real work out. I didn't have enough tactical know-how to properly operate in a full 5 on 5 game over there but happy enough to keep playing in scrimmages. At one time I was playing at least once a day. My knees are really paying for it now.
