If Mayo beat Donegal next week is it head to head or score difference to who goes to semi final

Tie-breaker

If only two teams are level on group points -

  • The team that won the head-to-head match is ranked first
  • If this game was a draw, score difference (total scored minus total conceded in all group games) is used to rank the teams
  • If score difference is identical, total scored is used to rank the teams
  • If still identical, a play-off is required
If three or more teams are level on group points, score difference is used to rank the teams.

Hmmmm, so if all 3 games finished level on identical scores that means that play offs among all teams will be needed and when they finish with identical scores then Dublin will be put through to the final on their own ;)

So the 3rd round of games already have 2 dead rubber games with Dublin and Tyrone already qualified for the semi-finals.

The flaw that was pointed out before it started has come round again. The format may have been a good idea in someones head, but it certainly doesn't make the competition any more competitive. It certainly doesn't do the weaker teams any favours, or at least not in my opinion. Maybe it is a good idea. I'm open to correction and other ways of looking at it.
Only way to make it interesting would be if second and third in the groups went into a play off against each other to see who gets out of the group, like what we have in our championship, but theres already enough games for players and fans to be tramping the length of the country to.

You could have 4 groups of 3 in Super 8’s.

Teams would only have to play 2 games, leaving them fresher. Plus 8 qualifiers (2 in each group) means one less round of qualifiers. So calendar is condensed.

Might still be dead rubbers but not likely to be as many overall.

Good ideas still takes 3 weeks to play the group stage games

Ultimately provincial championship has to go

Yes, but take out qualifier round 4, and that’s the first super 8 weekend.

Plus there’s a free weekend before semis, unlike now.

Agree re: provincials. But I can’t see them going.

I see that both Dublin and Tyrone squads for Sundays game are out - photos of their respective squads from the program
A lot of changes

Super 8 format is dead. Make all games meaningful
