caught the second game in pearse og park yesterday on my way to the junior double header and while not the best of games, the intensity and effort of both teams can't be faulted. thought it was quite a strange refereeing performance. i have never seen a ref blow for a free on a kickout for the opposition 'mouthing' towards a keeper, advancing the ball outside of the 45 and then allowing play to continue, has anyone ever seen/heard of this? harps full forward can also count himself unlucky, as most refs would give frees for the late hits he received yesterday, but he was constantly told to get up. all in all it was a poor game, not helped by the conditions! it will be interesting to see the draw tonight, think we could see at least 2 big ties in quarters with senior championship beginning to gather some pace

Bit of a grey area one but covered by the "verbal abuse of an opponent" and [I'm assuming in this case] it's treated in the same way a "where the ball lands" free. The offending player should have been yellow carded or red if it had been foul and/or offensive language in the same way sledging is now treated if noted by an official. At least that is my understanding from a ref on the national panel. It was something that was chatted about in our group at national league game last year or the year before.

it wasnt an individual player. it was what appeared to be the majority of the forward line and some players further back. it seems that most teams employ this tactic to put opposition keepers off but i have never seen it blown before. it happened for both sides yesterday, yet the ref only blew it up once. a strange ruling and i would imagine i was not the only one asking this question yesterday!

Yeah you're absolutely right it's strange and I've definitely never heard of it being done before. Maybe he thought it would stop the behaviour, maybe it was for something completely different that wasn't noticed at the time. I guess that's the problem when you don't hear the ref audio similar to high level rugby. Leaves it all as guess work. Mind you I'm also most likely wrong on my assumption of the rule too, so heaven only really knows what it may have been for!

Amazing how few Silverbridge and Sarsfields supporters stayed for the second game. Not sure that double headers are the attraction many think. I spoke to a few people yesterday/today and a few mentioned they didnt go up due to the expected price. Someone missed a trick there with the matches only a fiver.
