You would need to set some sort of date start and finish. I can still remember such an Armagh great as Jimmy Whan but many will never have heard tell of him.
My Dad still often speaks about Jimmy Whan. Thought he was a genius and always told a story about him chipping a ball up into his hands while it was rolling away from him.
I was lucky to have parents and family friends who used to enjoy trading yarns and stories about great Armagh footballers and epic games.
As a youngster, I was captivated, hearing about Jack Brattan, Sean Quinn and Mal McEvoy. In particular I loved the stories from an elderly neighbour about Jim McCullough, who she claimed could fist a ball over the bar from the 50. She hated Cavan, and referenced them with the sort of venom our generation reserve for Tyrone. This was due to intense rivalry between Armagh and Cavan in the 30s/40s and she spoke about an Ulster Final in which Jim McCullough was attacked by the crowd as he went to kick a side line ball.
Like many of you, I am grateful for these stories. This is our folklore and to my young mind, these guys were Cúchulainn. I hope these stories get told time and time again as they are part of what etched my love of Armagh football into my DNA.
In the 70's and early 80's, Paddy Moriarity, Jimmy Smyth and Joe Kernan were heroes for me. Big Joe is mainly celebrated as a manager, but don't forget how magnificent he was as in the late 70's as an Armgh midfielder. I also really enjoyed watching Denis Stevenson- a very speedy Andy Mallon like defender.
