It is with great sadness and regret that today we learned of the death of our honorary president Joseph Canning.

Conferred as Uachtarán Ard Mhacha Cumann Lúthchleas Gael in 2020, Joseph was a lifelong member and dedicated volunteer for the association.

Steeped in the GAA for many years he occupied a number of administrative roles within the association, which began in the 1960’s when he took up the role of club secretary, a position he held for 12 years in St Killian’s GAC, Whitecross. He held the position of South Board secretary and later was elected as County Board Treasurer for an astonishing 20 years.

During his time as Treasurer of the County Board, he met many challenges along the way including the difficulties in raising sufficient finance to meet county expenditures. He worked closely with county management teams and was secretary of the Minor Board when Armagh won the 1968 Ulster Minor championship and County Treasurer when Armagh reached the All Ireland final in 1977.

Armagh County Chairman Michael Savage said, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of our esteemed President.

“Joseph Canning served his club and county passionately for many many years. A true Armagh Gael who devoted so much of his time to our county, and we were very proud to recognise Joe with the role of Honorary President last year, to pay tribute for his service and dedication.

“On behalf of Contae Ard Mhacha, I want to pass on my heartfelt sympathies to his sister Angela, brother Francis, the entire family circle and members of his beloved club Naomh Cillian Crois Ban CLG. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
