Ulster Championship 2024

Forker is in the same boat as Rian, neither is playing well compared to what they can do, but ultimately we’ll need them in an ulster final so should try let them play themselves into a bit of form. No point dropping them now and hoping they can find their form in the final. I’d say murnin and grugan are the opposite, they haven’t really done much wrong but I don’t think resting them against Fermanagh would do any harm.

Forker in everyone of the teams I’ve seen. Given that almost all of these are teams people would like to see rather than the one that they think management will choose the obvious question is - does Forker’s form merit selection?

We all know what an on form Aidan Forker brings to the team. A lot of that I think is missing from current form though.

The core of the team won’t change. But maybe there could be a few curve ball selections/omissions on the horizon. It happened last year and the year before.

I think P Burns and McGrane should be nailed on. A fit McCambrige will put pressure on them. Not sure how far off Morgan is.
McKay is not in top form but difficult to see Huggins of Connaire Mackin displacing him. McCabe is critical to the team. I see him more in the role that Forker has been playing. Fitness and form amongst J Burns, C O’Neill, McElroy and maybe McQuillan for the 2 wing back slots. Ross is still unproven at this level. Great athlete but end product counts at this level.
As I mentioned before the midfield balance needs looked at. If Rian comes into the team I would not be surprised if it is as an orthodox midfielder.
It’s possible that some of the midfield options (Grimley and McPartlan) come in to freshen things up at wing forward. Game time for Soupy but maybe not starting. Grugan starts all day long. The front 3 should stay as it is.
I disagree with your view on forker he has been great all league except the final and think he is perfect for number 6 as he has vision and not afraid to pass unlike others. He didn't have a great final but not many did, he was great all league (I know standard was poor) I don't think anyone 2 people on here will agree with a starting 15. Burns for me has been great but I'd have mccambridge and Morgan all day over him tbh, same with some of the forwards Rian and oisin have to start, maybe Rian in midfield as someone suggested might be worth a go

And I disagree with that.

I referred earlier to what an on form Forker brings to the team. I would love to have that. The bit I disagree with is his form throughout the league. To me he is off the pace a little (maybe carrying a niggle or has a regime aimed at peaking later?), I don’t think he is being deployed in the sweeper role any more (that seems to be a mix of McKay and McCabe, depending on the make up of the opposition attack) and I don’t think he is using his kick passing game of old. A lot of his kick passes are sidewards or barely forward to an unmarked player on the wing. McCabe is more direct imho. He is one of the players who has the confidence to take on the posts from distance and that remains in the positive side of ledger.

I don’t think he has been awful or anything close to that but the bigger point is that we need to rethink the middle third and also how quick we transition the ball whilst also having a fielding and a running option.

We all seem to agree that we will have depth. That means we will have strong players on the bench. I think that Forker is in the mix rather than being nailed on. I have a lot of faith in McCabe and growing confidence in Conor O’Neill and McElroy. That is maybe where I would look.

Think if everyone is 100% fit and in top form nailed on starters and everyone would probably agree are Forker, Grugan, Murnin and Rian. Oisin O’Neill on top form starts as well. Soupy either starting or held as an impact sub. After that theres probably discussions to be had depending on your preference.

My dream team would probably be

Blaine

Morgan
McKay
Forker

C O’Neill
McCabe
Mackin

Grimley
O’Neill

Soupy
Grugan
Duffy

Murnin
O’Neill
Conaty

Then
Burns
McGrane
McCambridge
McQuillan
McPartlan
Crealey
McElroy
Nugent
Turbitt

Could all very easily start there as well. (You could probably ask me again tomorrow and a few of those boys would start). Thats not a prediction team or even a team I’d like to see start vs Fermanagh, but just what I think is our strongest 15

Philly McMahon has seriously got the wrong man of the match

Cavan full forward Paddy Flynn scores 1-9 out of 3-12 and not to get it

Thoughts are with Darren Hughes - looked a bad injury.

Monaghan poor today - mid table division 2 Cavan beat them

Just goes to show the league doesn’t mean much when it comes to championship form. Cavan were woeful against us.

Hope Hughes isn’t too badly hurt, looked nasty and he doesn’t deserve to end his career like that. A great servant for club and county for years.

The championship is a whole new ball game

Folks the team people want to see start v the team that starts are two very very different things.

In my opinion there won't be a pile of change from the league line ups. It won't be too far different from this:

Hughes

Burns
McKay
McGrane

Forker
McCabe
J og Burns/McCambridge

Crealey
Mackin

McElroy
Grugan
R o Neill/Burns/McCambridge

Conaty
Murnin
Turbitt

Nobody outside of the 16 players I have mentioned there, are going to start this game. We aren't going to change the system or the way we play just to accommodate a few forwards we think should be starting. Rafferty is not starting in nets and he isn't going to get a run out at midfield or the half forward line either. Morgan isn't going to appear from nowhere. We will beat Fermanagh, because they are truly atrocious, I don't even think this fermanagh team have it in them to be as dogged as usual. They just aren't up to it. We will get a better test against down.

I think you're kinda right, but I'd throw Conor O'Neill and Stefan Campbell into the equation too. Both started several league games and, if they're fit, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see them line out on Sunday. Connaire Mackin also as likely to be a starting option around the middle 8 as McCambridge - both have seen similar game time to date this year.

If fit then c o Neill will maybe play a part, but I think McGeeney is now settled on what he wants. But I think Campbell's legs will be saved, he won't start.

Yeah I think you could be right. Although McPartlan came from nowhere last year to start in the championship so who knows.
