apparently Cathel McShane of Tyrone is heading to the aussie rules massive blow to Tyrone GAA
I saw the same story this morning. I also read one the other day where he said the exact opposite and he wasn't leaving to sign for an Australian Rules club. So who knows?!

Just been on the news on radio Ulster so there must be something to it - I was at the dentist so don't judge me for listening to such a great radio station so it is

So what does the GAA do to stop our best players from heading to Oz?? They introduce a forward mark to ensure our game is more aligned to the AFL!!!! Higher probability now our best players will be poached. GAA need to start thinking about how to keep our players in Ireland and stop tinkering with our game

Cat is already out of the bag.

Regardless of marks or rule changes, AFL clubs know there is talent in Ireland they can entice to Australia.

While it’s a big loss for the GAA seeing these players go to another sport, there’s not a big pile they can do about it.

I’d say there’s more talent going to soccer than AFL.

I wouldnt be overly worried

The difference in the number of players going over to Oz against the numbers who actually make it playing Aussie rules must be huge

Its a small percentage - I'd say the number of young players who decide to concentrate on soccer or other sports when they could potentially make it as a senior footballer is probably similar.

If mcshane goes fair play to him - its an opportunity.
If someone goes abroad to work in their field of expertise - ,so be it

I do see some merit in compensation to the club and county for the training, medical support and so on but ultimately we are an amateur sport and thats a professional sport
It may work for him, it may not.

Personally if I was an up and coming young Oz player and saw someone getting a contract who hasnt spent their youth playing the same game I'd be pi**ed off. Is there a transfer mechanism in Aussie rules football? Small feeder clubs would be missing out so

Our own game is becoming a hybrid for exporting our players and potentially our game to other countries

Another thing that doesn’t help is the continual pushing of the International Rules series.

Long past it’s sell by date. I think the only reason it continues is so the head honchos get a month in Australia.

I agree
The International Rules games should be scrapped- just a junket for some and a mongrel of a game for both teams.

Also- it would be better if the powers that be would stop tinkering with the rules and let the games flow better.

Both of the above might be wishful thinking...

I disagree. The International Rule when done correctly is very enjoyable. The loudest crowd noise I ever experienced at Croke Park was in a game against Australia. 83,000 people all shouting for Ireland before the game started was just unreal. Not a reason to keep it on I know, but I think that when it's done well then it's extremely enjoyable. But everyone will have their own opinion. I think as well that the players playing are generally too old to make in AFL and the word is out of the young players we have here anyway, so I don't see how that would change. I do think that compensation to clubs and counties is something that is worth considering, when you think about all the time and money that has been spent developing these players.

HQ keep flogging the Rules series, bigging it up and pushing it massively. Most have lost interest, especially in Australia.

If they’d marketed the Inter Provincials with half the effort, they’d still be going too. Instead, they did nothing.

Yeah it's been talked about before, but then what about the players that go on to soccer, cricket (yep it has happened, two current Irish players former GAA future stars, but don't ask me their names and one plays/played for England), rugby (Tommy Bowe comes to mind), cycling, boxing and a few others I can't think off hand. They've all had former GAA players compete. By the same thinking they'd all have to compensate.

There's the "but they didn't target the players" argument, even though some will have so why would that even matter. If a sport has to compensate, then why wouldn't another! The same training and money will have been spent on the club mates that just simply go off for university and/or work never to return or at least to the club. I was one of those to be honest.
