Feedback from Previous Participants on the Benefits of the Intern Program:

“Having worked as a Physio in Gaelic football for years I was excited to work with my county’s senior men’s football team for the 2016 season. It was a great opportunity to be part of a bigger setup encompassing a Strength and conditioning coach, a sports scientist statistician, a psychologist, sports doctor and wider management setup. Learning from the other disciplines was key to my professional development. The CPD provided by the county board included the world recognised Sports Traumatology Course and Adam Mekins shoulder course. All of us physios in the Armagh GAA setup from hurling to football and underage had an open forum where we could chat and challenge each other’s clinical reasoning. I would recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in sports to apply for, whether you are a new graduate or experienced physiotherapist looking to expand into sport. I have no doubt this year aided me in where I am now, which is working full time in high performance sport”. Roisin Murphy (Senior Footballers, 2016)

“How I feel the process helped me:
1. Getting an insight into the elite athlete routine from training, nutrition, psychological support, match day process and recovery.
2. Learning the diagnostic process involved when dealing with the athletes. Ranging from hands on diagnosis to MRIs/ultrasound. What further investigations need to be carried out to fully assess an injury in order to prescribe the correct treatment required.
3. Learning the hands on treatment and rehab that is required and how it not only varies from injury to injury but also to the individual. Very often the athletes will direct the treatment, for instance some will ask for a different treatment to the next depending on what ‘they’ feel will benefit them most.
4. Learning that all treatment does not involve the hands on approach and that sometimes re-assurance can be an effective treatment method.
5. Having the confidence to admit that you don’t understand an injury and asking for help whether it be from Paul or Martin. Not to guess but seek help and advice from more experience peers”.
Sean McSorley (Senior Footballers 2014 & 2015)

“I found the past two years working as part of the Armagh physio team to be very enjoyable and an excellent learning opportunity, especially when just out of uni with little experience. What I found most beneficial was the ongoing support from the lead physio should any issues arise and the group support where all physios learned from each others experiences, together with the in-services and fantastic courses provided.
I have learnt so much from working with the Armagh board and gained invaluable experience which will stand by me in the future”.
Orla Matthews (U21 Footballers 2014 & 2015)

“I think the internship was a very worth while experience. The mentoring provided by Paul when I came across things that I was not sure off was invaluable. The CPD courses and workshops provided were excellent and sport specific, I learnt skills that I was able to apply straight away while looking after teams”.
Damien Doherty (Senior Hurlers 2015 & 2016)

“Great year as part of the internship! Gained valuable experience working with a great team developing knowledge in on-field rehab, as well as off-field rehab. Reassuring knowing you have the support of a senior physio if any issues should arise with a player and best of all it was fun and a bit of craic along the way! Highly recommend for anyone looking experience in the sports side of things”.
Laura Cowan (Senior Hurlers 2016)
