Armagh hurlers got their season off to a good start with a 4-11 to 0-5 win over Monaghan at a blustery Inniskeen on Sunday 27 January. The first half was a low-scoring affair and the strong crossfield wind played a role in Armagh’s 10 wides in the opening period.

Danny Magee and Eoin McGuinness opened the scoring for the visitors and the two combined for the third, with Magee finishing after a super fetch from McGuinness. Ruairí Fullerton added a fourth before team captain, Stephen Renaghan, got the first of the four goals after 20 minutes. A combination of wayward shooting, poor choices and a strong breeze meant that the goal would be Armagh’s final contribution to the scoreboard in the first half. Monaghan hit a couple of points through Tadhg Campbell and Eamonn Collins, but it was a struggle to break through the Armagh defence.

Half time Armagh 1-4 Monaghan 0-2

Monaghan opened the second half scoring from a free, but it was quickly cancelled out with a Danny Magee effort from play. Tadhg Campbell then reduced the gap to four, before Ruairí Fullerton added two in a row. The next score from Monaghan would prove to be their last and the home side were left reeling after a harsh sending off. Armagh pushed on from there with a goal from Eoin McGuinness and converted free from Fullerton. Fantastic stick work from Dylan McKenna to control the ball and finish to the net pushed the visitors 12 ahead. Nathan Curry was on target before McKenna hit his second and Armagh’s fourth goal and further scores from Caolán Rice and Ruairí Fullerton completed the rout.

Next up for the senior hurlers is a home tie to Lancashire next Sunday at 2pm in Crossmaglen.
