Armagh players remembered for one thing above anything else

Just came into my head for an interesting topic.

Sometimes, rightly or wrongly, fairly or unfairly, a player can be remembered for one moment above anything else they did.

Here’s a few:

Denis Hollywood - two goals v Fermanagh in 1993 that started that comeback.

Ryan Henderson - 4 goals against Wexford.

Oisin McConville - his goal in the 2002 AI final.

Bill McCorry - missing that penalty in 1953.

Diarmuid Marsden - unfairly dismissed in 2003 final.

Joe Kernan - controversially dropped for the 1987 Ulster final.

Vinny Loughran - sent off in the 1987 Ulster final.

You're probably right about a couple there - Hollywood and loughran.

Mcconville will be remembered for much more than just his goal in 2002.

Why was big joe dropped in 1987? I remember him coming on as sub with mckerr at HT. I remember Mckerr changing the game when going to midfield. I remember looking at big joe when he came on and wondering if he'd been to many training sessions before that match!

Yeah McConville did so much over the years. But he did it when it mattered the most in 2002.

Joe was carrying a bit of timber alright. Remember him catching a few balls when he came on and unsettling the Derry defence. We left it too late though. Think that was his last game.

That’s right, McKerr was dropped that day too. Forgot about that.

At one time Bumpy O'Hagan was in danger of always being remembered for his shot that dropped short into the Kerry keepers hands (2000 Semi final)

Along with his goal v Kerry in that game, he’ll always be remembered for the kick into the keepers hands. For me, anyway.

John Donaldson - named to start at midfield ahead of the Meath game in 1999.

I’d never even heard of him before that. Didn’t work out on the day. Thought there was too much pressure put on him to perform well.

On the other hand, I like to remember him for another reason. Pat has rightly mentioned John Grimleys goal v Fermanagh in 93 - capping the greatest comeback I have ever seen in any gaelic match.
For some reason, I have always remembered the beginning of that comeback. Less than 10 minutes to go, O Hagan is in space about 15 metres out. Could have had a wild swing for a goal but had the coolness to tap the ball over the bar. Not as glamorous or sensational maybe as the goal at the end but still a vital part of the comeback.
A game I will never forget. The Fermanagh manager was almost in tears when interviewed afterwards.

He had previously been a stalwart for Louth and played for Leinster in the Railway cup for a number of seasons winning 2 medals in 1996 and 97. He was an excellent footballer and I hated being marked by him when he joined us.
