Armagh Scór na nÓg 2017 is up and running after three first round events over a busy weekend, which showcased the very best of Armagh talent.

In spite of ferocious weather, a good crowd gathered at Killeavy Youth Club to enjoy the opening round, which was dominated by the host club. Two céilí teams from Killeavy danced there way to a semi-final spot and were joined by their club mates, with two instrumental groups from the host club also progressing. Reigning county solo singing champion Piaras Ó Lorcáin from Crossmaglen made his way to the semi-final and was joined by the Killeavy camogie representative. Carrickcruppen put up a strong showing in the ballad group section and were joined by the Killeavy ladies team. The host club also saw their representatives in recitation and léiriú progress to the semi-final.

On Saturday, Whitecross played host to the second first round with representatives from five clubs progressing through to a semi-final. Dromintee progressed in the céilí and set dancing sections. Last year’s All-Ireland finalists Cullyhanna maintained their club’s strong acting tradition and were joined by Dromintee in winning through in the léiriú section, and Cullyhanna and Whitecross produced strong performances in the recitation section. Whitecross and Silverbridge won through in solo singing, while it was Dromintee and Cullyhanna who went through in the ballad group section. In a highly competitive instrumental section, Silverbridge were joined by one of the two Mullaghbane acts.

Derrytrasna was the venue for Sunday’s first round and the Maghery instrumental group were joined by their solo singer in winning through to the semi-final. Tír na nÓg also won through in the solo singing section. The representative from the host club Sarsfields was joined in the semi-final by the representative from Tír na nÓg and Pearse Óg. The quiz was won by the team from Cú Chulainn Hurling club who finished on an impressive score.

The qualifying round for those not placed first and second will take place on Saturday 28 October in Madden at 6pm.
