Armagh U17s/U20s

When "academy" players are coached so negatively and not encouraged to go and play, does he really think these guys will want to play football with the senior county team in the future if this is a taste of the "system" they are going to have to fall into? Young lads want to play ball - not every man, woman and child behind the ball. Bugger that. They don't call us Tyrone. How do the players feel that the manager knew his team was 10 points worse that 4 other counties before he took the job? How exactly would he know this? Lads can develop from one year to the next. Very negative from the start me thinks which was displayed on Saturday night in abundance.

The real problem is that McKeever thinks that a 4 point defeat is a success. I'd rather get tanked and score more than four points in a game. It would be the same result - a loss. Has enjoyment gone out of our brilliant game altogether? I won't be gracing the AG to watch them this Saturday night that's for sure. I'll watch the darts or snooker instead for a bit of entertainment.

Fully agree. Such negative football is been coached from minor level u to senior and is simply not good enough. Seems like there is no ambition within the county. Appointing coaches from senior level down who have no success as managers. Even our own county chairman Mr Savage suggesting a number of weeks back that he want Kieran to stay on as senior manager as he is doing a great job despite having not won a game in ulster in 5 years. No ambition and it is coming directly from the county board.

We have one of the best young managers in Ireland in our county who is up managing Crossmaglen under 14s. No ambition.

I also will not be at the AG on Sat nor in Newry on the 19th May to watch such puke football.

Agree a lot with you are saying but you cannot lambaste the county board for appointing former county players as they have no experience and then put a case forward for an U14 Crossmaglen manager to get the gig. Maybe your U14 manager is the dog's tool of a manager but he would need to earn his stripes and then push on to get involved in maybe U14 academy squads etc before getting the Minor management position - just saying. Who is he by the way, just interested.

The thing i take exception to with McKeever is that he says his job is not to win Ulster Titles but to make as many senior footballers as possible for the county. If he truly believes that, coach them to play proper, expansive and expressive football. Let them enjoy their county experience rather than robots to a system that aims to stop other teams from playing (which was clearly his tactic last Saturday). I am not saying go out there gung-ho with no system, no clue and get taken apart for being naive - but Jesus let them play football or they'll be turned off from county football for the rest of their lives.

Ciaran mckeever made a good point in an interview recently, his job isn’t to win Ulster titles, it’s to produce players to play for the Armagh senior team for the next 10-15 year. The lack of succes may be frustrating but as long as the talent carries through to senior then I think it’s a worthwhile process. Look at the Derry teams of the last few years, they’ve been very competitive at underage but very little have carried through to senior as of yet.
But I am not sure if that is the best policy. I don't see any room to develop a winner's mentality. Success breeds more success, instilling belief, confidence and that sheer will to win. To my mind, that comes best from being part of team culture (club or county) that has a winners drive and mentality. Good players will emerge if that is the emphasis and is why Cross have dominated for so long and why Kerry are never far from the top table. We are not All Ireland challengers, but if we ever want to be again it is to start that belief into our teams. I can't see a lot of lads getting too motivated if the set up is emphasizing it is more important to be keeping an eye open for a promising player or two rather than getting the experience of playing good football in a team that wants to express themselves and win.
Derry produces good underage teams and has a strong club scene. Problem for them is the shambolic nature of their county board set up and rabid hatred the clubs have of each other. I can tell you, club rivalry has a totally different meaning in Derry and most of their problems at senior level are due to petty grievances, falling outs and just really not able to sit down and agree among themselves as to the best course of action to move forward. The interest in club football in Derry is high but there is a lot of apathy towards the county set up.

u14 Crossmaglen manager is a Mr. Tony McEntee who has more experience at winning as a manager than all our coaches put together.

Agree, fellas at 16,17,18 dont want to be told to fall back behind the ball into a defensive system. They should be able to go out and enjoy their football and an attacking mindset should be instilled into our young players.

Its not the best policy. I honestly think its a cop out. Its a disgrace.

The former county footballer? Who played with Ciaran Mckeever? The same one? People would be saying not another part of the 02 brigade? Honestly, if Tony wanted to take a county minor or academy team i wouldn't see anyone trying to step in his way. I'm not sure he wants those jobs does he? His kids are young and he's coaching at that level is he not? Tony has been approached to take a number of senior clubs but he just wants top coach underage at cross i'm led to believe. He would be some addition into the whole set up without a doubt. Can't see that happening though. For one sure thing, they wouldn't be coached they way they currently are with Tony. 4 points in a game of football! holy jeysus.

Yes the 02 brigade but one of the only ones who went on and had success as a manager. He has a real dedication to cross that is correct but Mayo approached him and took him on board. No approach was made by Armagh at any stage. I suppose my beef woul dbe why was he not approached after leading Cross to all ireland success.

And correct the scrap that is been coached at the minute in the county would not be coached if he was in charge. I believe his brother is also doing a fantastic job with Clontibret this year so far. Playing a serious brand of attacking and kick passing style of play.

U16,17,18 mite not want to be told to fall back behind the ball but they also don’t want to take a 20 point hammering either isn’t much enjoyment in that is there? damned if you do and damned if you don't Comes to mind.

Full time score

Armagh 1-14
Antrim 1-9
Hopefully that will be a major confidence boost for these lads. Not saying beating Antrim qualifies them for an all Ireland final, just that all last year this squad got a tanking every game they played. A win, any win would maybe give them belief. There is certainly talent, but nervousness too. When they got well ahead they took the foot off. Can't be blamed on management as they could be seen and heard roaring them forward and almost pleading with them to "have a go and get it over the bar". All Antrim had to offer was fighting. Thanking only once did we fall for it. An interesting if not exciting game.
