Armagh U17s/U20s

I'd be curious to know how many managers of the various Armagh underage football teams over the last decade have a track record of success with club underage football in the county.

Without knowing the stats it feels like very few...although could be totally wrong.

If you take the last 5-6 years both yourselves and ourselves have been the dominant clubs at underage within the county. I'd say we have shared the majority of u16, minor and u21 trophies and have a nice smattering of Feiles between us. Your boys have contributed significantly to the St Ronan's success story as well. I know that there are no Cross selectors involved in any of the teams and I think I could be right that there are no CE men of note either. It seems to be that you either have had to been on the 2002 team or be best mates with one of them to get a job within the county.

I am a bit at cross purposes here. Although I agree that both Clann Eireann and Crossmaglen seem to have good under age structures what constitutes success at underage. Are the coaches at these 2 clubs better than anywhere else in the county or are the structures in these clubs better - or both. Alternatively is the work going on in the schools better near these clubs. Also, how is success measured. For example, say Clady have the best underage coaches in the county. They are still unlikely to be able to compete with the bigger clubs. Is success winning underage throphies or keeping young people involved with the club long into adulthood.

I will say that from the outside it seems Armagh as a county need to improve at underage. Then again maybe the right changes have been made but have not filtered through yet.

I appreciate what is being said about pinpointing the exact reason for success between coaches, players, structure and schools etc, however we have won u14 League, Feile and Championship, U16 League, Championship and Ulster and the Minor title over the last decade, so that would suggest that something right is being done by the club in terms of management and coaching.

Cross have a similar record of success and usually you have to either play them in the final or beat them to get to the final (some great games between us it's fair to say). And while there are other clubs over that period who have produced good underage teams ( Killeavy, Dromintee, Cullyhanna for example) there are not many who can match the sustained level of success ourselves and Cross have had recently.

While it's maybe not the only factor I think it would be very hard to argue that good management / coaching didn't play a significant part in all that, so I guess only the county board can say why there was (and is) practically zero representaion from both these clubs in the underage management set up at county level......surely good management / coaching and structure has a place there?

CEman while I agree with you about Cross and Clann Eireann my point still is that it is hard to judge a coach if the structures he is working with hinder him /her.

I would say however that bringing coaches in from the more successful clubs might help get the right structures in place because they know what works.

I agree - structures are important and if not put in place correctly can certainly hinder a good coach. I firmly believe however that a poor coach working within good structres will still find it difficult to succeed.

So, while some good coaches may not recive the recogtnition they deserve sometimes I do think that there has to be a recognition of good coaching in most successful teams. Certainly when the success proves consistent.

All moot points really however as the county board seem set on appointing ex county players and don't seem to have much interest beyond that.

Just back from game. Starting team completely strange and must have been looking at players or he is complete daft. No turbitt playing and he would be close to starting for our seniors. Ross obviously injured no Meehan or many of them st ronans boys and our defence so poor tonight you would think we would have young Magennis from my club and the young Martin from Dromintee in there saying they both recently received Ulster schools all stars recently. There really needs to be a beet set up for underage in our county

When we opened the forum we also set up a Facebook page. We haven't put a thing on there in quite a while, but would like to get it active. For those of you on Facebook, if you haven't already liked the page please do so - https://www.facebook.com/orchardfans/
and remember it is free. Ask all your Armagh supporting family and friends to do the same. It would be cool if we could get it active for those that don't know about us here and want to be able to discuss all things Armagh GAA without hindrance from the officialdom!

Thanks again everyone.
