Hurlers lose out to Ulster rivals

Armagh lost out to Donegal on Sunday, as the visitors completed an impressive treble of Division 2B Ulster victories, to condemn the Orchard hurlers to a relegation play-off against Derry.

Scores were traded early on, but Armagh earned a two point lead after 20 minutes with two David Carvill frees following up on a great score from Kieran McKernan. Donegal however responded well and soon hit the lead when former Armagh and Cú Chulainn player Declan Coulter struck for goal. Carvill was again on target to draw Armagh level and with scores traded, the sides went in level at half time Ard Mhacha 0-9 Dún na nGall 1-6.

The second half got underway with Armagh gifting a handy score for the visitors, but David Carvill again showed his class to hit a good score after fantastic fielding. But Donegal pushed ahead as a second three pointer from Coulter from the penalty spot was followed up by a free. Armagh did fight back, but Donegal were playing with more confidence and maintained the gap. The visitors had a response for every Armagh score and built up further momentum to push seven points ahead with time near up. A late point from Stephen Renaghan and a converted penalty at the death reduced the gap, but ultimately Armagh fell short and await confirmation of the play-off fixture to decide their feat.
