Intermediate Championship 2019

So from 2000, 3 teams have made an intermediate final from armagh. 19 years. 38 final places up for grabs. 3 taken from a team from armagh. Not a great return. And realistically Down, Fermanagh, Antrim intermediate isn't a great standard. So there is a problem at that level.

Tyrone and Monaghan teams have won plenty at intermediate and junior but Tyrone in particular have been very poor at senior.

Hmm Antrim Fermanagh and Down clubs have all won Ulster intermediate titles in recent years. Lisnaskea won the all Ireland final. I think Armagh football is just poor in general. The two teams who contested the final wouldn’t be the strongest two teams at that level in my opinion.

What format should it be?

Although I like the current format, I wonder would there be an argument for decreasing the size of our Senior Championship and increasing the size of our Intermediate and Junior Championships? This seems to be the approach in Kerry. It might certainly serve to make our teams more competitive outside Armagh.

It could still be linked to the league - Senior; One Division of 10 teams; Intermediate Two divisions of ten teams; Junior one division of 13 / 14 or two divisions of 7 /8 (depending on numbers). Come Championship, groups would be five teams in Senior and Intermediate, with top two progressing; - to semi-finals in Senior - to quarter-finals in Intermediate.

I think the current format is a joke to be honest, I've nothing against back doors or group stages, but to have 3 teams going through from groups of 4 is ridiculous, should be a maximum of 2 from each group going through

When the proposal was put to the Club representatives at the County Convention, the rationale was clearly explained - it was to stop dead rubbers occurring and having meaningless Championship fixtures. The proposal was subsequently passed.

If we are going down the route of having groups, then I feel it is important to retain that.

Too many teams playing senior and intermediate without having won a championship. At the very least you should’ve won intermediate before you can play senior
Armagh has probably only 6 genuine senior teams

To be honest I think the system is the best system that we could have. The one improvement I think would be to have divisional teams made up of the intermediate and junior teams to play in the senior championship. Maybe do what Rufus has suggested and reduce the senior teams to 10 and add in 6 divisional teams made up of junior and intermediate teams, 2 per area. I think it would improve the level of the senior championship and increase the level that the junior and intermediate players play at. I have watched senior players in the last number of seasons and to be brutally honest at 43 and busted I reckon I’m in as good a shape as some of them.

A fair point, I think I'd be more in favour of a backdoor format then, if you take 6 games per group of four in group stages, thats 24 games to knock out 4 teams.

I also agree with bcb, if we could add in say 4 divisional teams to the senior championship, it could only improve the level/quality of the championship. Seems to work well in Kerry.
