I've a notion there was someone long before your time, Jim. My Dad, Lord Rest Him, used to talk about our minors playing Roscommon - I think it may have been an All Ireland semi-final or a final replay - and a Roscommon player at the start of the second half getting the ball at the restart and putting the head down and going on a solo run and slotting the ball over the bar at their own end and then immediately burying his head in his hands! :)

I must look this up to see if / when we did play Roscommon in a big minor match in that era.

It could
Only have been in 1992 or 1951...given your dads legendary knowledge of the game I would put money on it being 1951 as I don’t recall that happening in the 1992 semi final.

I do recall it happening in Killeavey in a club championship back in the early 90’s between ourselves and yourselves .... the day of the big fight over by the fence. I recall we won the throw in and a young fresh faced man made a tear to his own goals and .... boom....over she went....that wasn’t you @Big Jim by any chance?

I remember playing a match (yes, I played! :p ), think it was maybe a schools match. We were getting hammered first half, we barely got out of our own half. Anyway, second half starts, I catch the ball from the throw-in, and look up and spot a team mate 15-20 yards away. Lovely footpass to him, and run towards him looking it back, when he hoofs it back over my head!

The stick I got for that!

Great to add to the collection of trophies. First half our intensity just wasn't there. Won’t do in Ulster. Lifted it up in the second half. Even when they got the goal we were lifting it further. Scored enough in the second half to win most games and that was done to a lift in work rate. We have the mentality to win and that cannot be coached.

Clontibret will be a step up but a lot will depend on what their ambition is. Nice side story with John Mac managing them. Will be strong and we will need to be at our second half level for the whole hour.

Interesting side show to today’s game....the county manager took Ballymacnab for a number of sessions in the build up to the final according to sources. It made no difference in the long run but is it appropriate for a county manager to train a club team in the build up to a county final? Personally I don’t think it is....

Nonsense

Yes, it was definitely early fifties - I remember 1992 very well.

It was the only good pass you give in your playing career :p

is it appropriate you ask? is it appropriate to concoct rumours about the county manager purely because many members of your club, and more than likely yourself included, dislike him?

Is it concocted? You don’t know what I think about the manager, in fact if you check my posting I have questioned him but also consistently backed him as well as questioned him. If he didn’t then no harm done, if he did then I think it is inappropriate.

Aye Rufus, but when I was playing at full forward and my team mates called me "useless" and "couldn't score if I was gifted one" I proved them all wrong by collecting the ball inside the 50 (the name what we call the trendy 45 nowadays) and duly ran all the way back to our own goals and popped it over the bar! Oh how we did laugh - after I got out of ICU and my committal time in St. Luke's!

I think the minor match mentioned was in 1968 v Sligo the team was managed by Harry Hoy, they missed a penalty, a player named Richardson was outstanding for Sligo.

Same here.

Is it old age, or do older matches tend to stick in your head more?

Maybe as success was limited, years of success (somewhat) is imprinted in your brain: 1982, 85, 92, 94, 99, etc. Winning Ulster or a league final or a big scalp stay in your head more than recent results.

Maybe it’s the back door, as you struggle to recall provincial winners now. Say what you like about the old system (pre 2001), but at least you knew where you stood.
