Saval also chinned in the intermediate by Clonoe, if Pat Havern is county standard then I will eat my hat.

Clonoe will take some stopping, they beat a very good Eglish team

Poor enough first half in the athletic grounds. Hopefully a big second half performance to come from Madden. Lot of slipping and poor handling. Know conditions aren't great after a lot of rain, but still

Madden were well beaten - only a few players performed up to the level required.

Disappointed in Daragh McMullan - was well marked, but top players need to find a way to exert an influence in a game.

Why?

There was a group of kids in the stand singing who were completely out of sync with the singer

In fairness the singer did exceptionally well to keep herself right given the out of sync group

Possible controversial opinion but the group of lads were better signing on their own, always annoys me going to a game and hearing a lilty, soft version of Amhran na bhFiann.

The longer version of the song’s first lines are “we’ll sing a song, a soldier’s song, with rousing, cheering chorus”

There doesn’t be anything rousing about the versions you hear 95% of the time.

On the match, too many missed chances in the middle of the second half for Madden but the best team by some distance won. Newbridge benefiting from previous Ulster club experience and a game under their belt in it this year was obvious. Madden dealing with the celebrations of first time county champions and the fall out from that. Knocks take longer to heal, fellas under the weather, etc which is all completely understandable. Newbridge, with a bit more ruthlessness, would have had a couple of goals.

Maybe Madden are just not that good??

Very harsh on McMullen. Mcelhoine from Lockmacrory did even less and had only one man marking him.

For me the big thing was that Newbridge could commit numbers to mark Grimley and McMullan. Madden didn't have enough to mark Newbridge key men

McMullen wasn’t at his best today, but he is a great talent.

I thought the Newbridge no 11 was lucky to stay on the pitch after he struck McMullen twice in the head. Don’t even think he got a yellow!

I've made this point before but the special players if you like when it comes to later stages of competitions aren't being allowed to play and the officiating is permitting it to happen. I didn't see the Madden game but I would assume McMullan was targeted in the same way McElhome was in the Kilcoo game. He was systematically markd out of it by Niall Branagan, the touches that he did get there was never a danger of him getting a return pass as he was just pushed backwards when he laid the ball off. One two occassions he was pulled to the ground and on another occassion he was pushed over the line almost hitting the linesman and nothing was done about it. The sooner this stops the better because we aren't getting to see the best of these lads.

At Club level this year McMullan has been exceptional, his oace and direct play has been a joy to watch, hopefully he can bring that form into the county set up and lead the team on.

I think the Madden 'ultras' are great addition and have brought a bit of energy to the support.
they have sang the anthem at the last few madden games i watched and they knew every word and sing it with enthusiasm
gaa is supposed to be about promoting our gaelic games and culture and we should be encouraging these young lads to learn and sing our anthem, not frowning upon it...
I would have forgot about the singer yesterday and gave these boys centre stage !!
