Underage football

Armagh have become the latest county to revert to U12, U14, U16 and U18 age groups forthwith. Club delegates voted to change from the ‘odd-numbered’ model (U13, 15 & 17) to even-numbered age groups.
Players in their last year of minor will be eligible to play senior football.

I'm guessing this is back to the old school years so technically U12.5 etc. Great news but a bit late coming. Most clubs have started training in their U13, 15, 17s etc. It was a ridiculous change in the first place.

One of the biggest issues with player retention is that children aren't getting to play with their school friends. This issue is just ignored year after year. The only effect it would have would be on u16 and minor county champions who the enter ulster, just another way we protect the interests of the 1% over the 99%. Also I feel it should have been left at odds with the decision made so late in the year and allow clubs to plan for even age groups over the winter for next season

It was pushed to go to school age (u18.5) a few years ago led by our presidential candidate. Guess who won the minor championship that year?

It makes sense but my understanding was that armagh had to seek authorisation from croke park to do that on a yearly basis. It should just go u8/10/12 etc as if the go games ages are by school age there is going to be an age group with an 18 month window of players and some lads depending on their d.o.b will only get one year at u12.

Anyway, please god the ages can be left alone for a while now after this change.

Thought he pushed it for odd years and they won u19. To be fair they had a decent team.

The messing around over the last few years has hindered some young players development and coupled with covid they have missed out.

School age maximises the possibility for playing with and against your peers and will give you 2 years at each level. Appreciate that not all staying at school but a good majority do.

The split season at senior means that older lads can join up after exams reducing the pressure on them.

The longer we can keep young ones involved the more senior players, officials, helpers, coaches etc. making healthy thriving community clubs.

I wonder could we do a poll to see who thinks it should be 14.5, 16.5 etc? @Admin1 is this possible?
Diarmi this isn't a post directly relating to you so don't worry. I'm just picking up from this and it'll be clear in a moment:

Off the back of this I received three almost identical questions by direct message, strangely from three completely different members, basically asking if it is ok that underage player names are used on the forum.

To repeat what I said to them and for clarity here, yes of course it is ok, but with conditions, or more accurately precautions.:

Please remember that these may be kids you are talking about that have family, some may even be on the forum, so be respectful!
Only use names that are already in the public domain for example listed on a printed programme!
Absolutely never ever criticise or personally abuse an individual or team. It is the only time we will immediately remove a member with no exceptions and that means no exceptions.
If you think it might not be the best comment to make, then please don't make it, even if you know you are right.
Use full and proper common sense and only encourage positive reinforcement. They might well be 17 or 18, but they are still kids. Maybe big and bold, but legally.......
So bottom line, AGAIN "If you think it might not be the best comment to make, then please don't make it, even if you know you are right!"

We might alter or add to this if it is appropriate. Please keep the good nature of our forum alive.

Whitecross are doing the one day coaching course on the same day as we play Kerry, Feb 25th. Does anyone know any clubs that are doing it on other dates perchance?

There is a few clubs with a second team in a different division at there age groups.
Is there any rules to stop them from playing there higher division players on the second team?
This has happened with some teams on the end of some tanking's because of it.

Would both teams not be playing on the same night?

Think it’s usually minors monday, u14’s Tuesday, u16’s Thursday as far as I know. Not sure if a player could play for the a team this week then drop down to the b team the following but would imagine it is the same as the likes of Cross fielding 2 teams at seniors.

yea they can but some nights the A teams game could be off or could be playing a team that they know they will win so they drop a few of the A team down to play the B team... Ideally it shouldn't happen but i don't think there is anything in place to stop it that I know of.
Its not fair on the lower teams that don't have this luxury

Not fair either on the B team player who gets dropped to win a competition. Shouldn't be happening to gain advantage, possibly to allow a fixture to be fulfilled.
