Coronavirus and the GAA

How many are at Cheltenham? Sure that’s a recipe for disaster.
UK government are beyond stupid.

I have seen people posting that Games are to be played behind closed doors - no source as of yet. Wouldn't be surprised by this considering st Patrick's Day festivals have been cancelled.

Are the pubs closing?
Are the buses stopped?
Are the trains stopped?
Are dentists closed?
Are restaurants closed?
Are churches closed?
Are supermarkets closed?

Common sense needs to prevail

20k+ going into one stadium is a higher risk than any of those examples though.

The common sense thing to do would be for people to show a level of hygeine that minimises the risk but can't rely on people to do that.

The PSG champions league game is being played behind closed doors yet there are thousands of fans gathered outside singing and dancing and letting off fireworks

It's getting silly Pat. That makes no sense at all. Everyone should take it seriously and be careful, but holy lord, get some common sense in the works

Gatherings of 500+ banned. Presumably that means all GAA matches north and south.
So the 100 people that are carrying the virus won't spread it to the other 400, but if that was 401 it will spread. Interesting take from the foreign state!

At what number do you draw the line then? 50, 10 ,2 It not a case of it not spreading, larger crowds means quicker more likely spread. It a case of trying to slow this bad boy down.

Emmmmm in case you missed it, that was facetious or a case of sarcasm if you're not sure what that means.

I'm one of those with underlying health issues that are affected by this and have taken medical advice. I can guarantee I'm in the top end of those that are fully aware of the potential and what should be done to negate any effects.

But having said that, take a look at what I said and genuinely think about it. 500 to me is an awful lot of people even if outdoors, unless they are spread out evenly throughout a stadium for example and at a distance where the virus will not spread, generally accepted by medical experts and virologists, as being no closer than 1.5 metres and for no more than a few minutes. The virus can survive on many surfaces for several hours ranging from 2 to 12. Again looking at what I said, if )and I do mean "IF") 100 of that 500 were carriers without symptoms, would it not spread quickly? If those 400 became contaminated and went home to 4 each, then suddenly 2100 are now carriers.

In truth, in answer to your question, the only actual way to stop the spread is complete lockdown and isolation. That just is not practical or possible.

Yes I did pick up on the sarcasm. 1 person in a small room of 20 has the potential to cause damage too, to my point about drawing the line. From listening to experts views on the topic many seem to believe this has the potential to drag on all year, vaccines are at least a year off. So I don’t think come the end of March this issues just going to go away and people can’t lock themselves away for ever. So going by today’s policy of cancelling all sport it’s very well possible we’ll not get any football this year.

Yeah I tend to agree although maybe not all year. Might get some in before Christmas. I think it could cause more panic than anything to be honest.

It seems to be on the turn in China. Mind you if you've seen any of the videos floating around from where it started.........I'm kinda glad we have the strict food hygiene rules we have as part of the EU.

I suppose the next questions are

What happens to the remainder of the league games?
Are this years leagues abandoned?
Do the leagues finish as they are?

Championship is linked to the league
April supposed to be club month

Depends how long this goes on for.

I fear this will not only last weeks, but months. Which would have drastic repercussions for the whole championship.

Peoples lives are at stake here though. If the season has to be scrapped, then so be it.

And right as it is that precautions are taken, peoples lives are at risk every moment of every day. If this outcry was carried on to mental health issues the world would grind to a halt. Smoking kills 10s of thousands. Traffic collisions claim 10s of thousands of lives. Every day we need to be careful and rightly we need to look after our health right now, but we also have to live. We can't stay isolated for a lengthy period of time. The economy would completely collapse. Stock markets are already in free fall.

I've said this many times before: it's only a game we follow and this is real life. But without social release, what is life? Driving a car can be dangerous. We can drive at 70 mph on a motorway, but in snow it could be 30mph. Caution in and of the surroundings is the key.

Would you stop talking sense, James :p

I know we can’t wrap ourselves up in bubblewrap (that would actually draw more people towards us, wanting to pop it) until it’s all over.

I don’t know how much a fortnight off will help the situation, but I’m willing to give it a chance.

Maybe the ‘pandemic’ and schools closing announcements will panic people into lying low and treating it more serious for 2 weeks, which might help.

But I don’t know the answer. All I know is I have family in the possible risk category, and I have to do what I can for their sakes.

Don’t understand the mental health reference. The type of actions taken to combat a contagious disease are not going to be deployed to tackle mental health issues for obvious reasons.

Smoking kills. Steps are taken to try to reduce this number. Difficult to know what additional steps to take given the complicity of many of the victims. The smoking bans and previously no smoking areas were designed primarily to address the the impact on entirely innocent victims.. CoVid19 represents a significant threat to many innocent parties. It is right that action is taken

I only hope that government warnings are heeded and people take the required steps
