Genuine question, only been watching the Gaa club and county regularly the last 4 years since moving over and the odd game over the years via sky/Setanta but why do players look for contact so much?

Annoys the hell out of me, keep that ball moving!

Jesus has the hysteria gone up another notch because of the lockdown after an Armagh defeat ? thank Jesus for @Rufus T Firefly and a few others for their calm, thoughtful reflections in a time where online hysteria is spiralling out of control it’s good to have a cool head now and then .
Firstly Roscommon are a good side they have won Connaught twice in the past few years and that’s no mean feat considering Mayo and Galway and it looks like they have strengthened their squad , their spell in the super 8s and playing Div 1 football was more than evident , their cuteness as well they fouled when they needed to some time cynical and perhaps that’s why they haven’t conceded a goal all year , our fouls were a mixture of tiredness, frustration and stupidity, which is disappointing as in the half period we looked well drilled and disciplined.
Without making excuses the lack of game time for many was evident Burns , Clarke , Grimley have had very little game time and the group hasn’t been together for much time and a lot of them have been playing At a low level so it’s hard to get up to speed but the defending was poor , Dessie Dolan made a good point that I noticed in the league we lose concentration when in control and we let teams back into matches with stupid mistakes . In fairness the first penalty was a poor call but it’s typical of what we were doing pre lockdown .
Some lovely scores today and with a bit more match fitness we could still go up to division 1 .I know people think that we aren’t ready but it will be a good experience even if we end up going down next year it will being many of the young team on so let’s see what next week brings , Clare are an underrated side with a good midfield and have given us trouble in our last few games so we will see if we learn anything next week .
Their penalty was maybe a bit soft but the way I look at them is would I be annoyed if we didn’t get it. And the answer is yes. It was a penalty alright.

Agree, tackling from behind, wrong side of forward and over the shoulder. It gives the forward the opportunity to go down and it gives the ref a decision to make. Goes back to an earlier point i made about bad tackling. However the first penalty didnt swing the game massively, we regrouped after the first one.

I have been reading through the comments and there is a massive over reaction to each defeat.

I'm not a fan of Geezer's as a manager, a player definitely, but as a manager I don't think he is up to it. However he is going no where anytime soon and will be in the job as long as HE wants.

People are quick to say we have a problem in the goalkeeping department but having watched a lot of club football I don't see too many better keepers out there than Blaine. Maybe I'm missing someone that other posters have seen.

Defensively I hated watching us have 15 men behind the ball - that was as fustrating as hell to watch. If we had won the game then maybe you could say it worked but in my opinion we have enough good forwards to trouble Roscommon and probably should have played a different type of system - but it's easy for me to say it after the result.

Niall Grimley never looked right in MF and you could see the heavy strapping on his leg.

I would question our conditioning. We have a conditioning coach in place 6 possibly 7 years and other teams are far better conditioned than us - questions need to be asked here.

People are questioning only having 1 player from Maghery without naming others who are good enough to be part of the squad. Crealey has been injured, Higgins opted out I think - who else is there that could have played a part last night.

Yes last night was fustrating but I can still see us getting promotion to D1 next week.

If Cavan win their last two games we will not get promoted
If Cavan win only one game and we beat Clare we get promoted
If cavan win and draw one and we beat Clare we get promoted

Couldn't be arsed to write the permutations for us to get promoted if we don't beat Clare

Never mind form or ability for me tonight proves that Armagh are not cute enough. They picked up a pile of yellows and a red mostly for innocuous things they should be able to cut out. I didn't see the Jamar incident but Kennedy could have went. Morgan was reckless and for a senior player Grugan gets involved in too much crap. Rian O'Neill fell into the Roscommon trap. He was stupid mouthing to get his first yellow but he was frustrated and his marker new it. You could see on camera the Roscommon fella pushing him repeatedly in the chest. Rian reacts and the Roscommon player makes it known to get him sent off. He will learn. They also knew when and where and how to foul to slow Armagh momentum. We should have learnt these things by now.

On a separate note until we coach our kids to show respect to referees and other players we will continue to have these problems. The antics of some coaches I saw at underage games this year doesn't set a great example.
Most referees in Armagh don’t deserve respect but thats another issue.

Jezz.. only reading over the comments from last night now. The sense of over criticism of some of OUR players is wild. Think we all need to take a rain check and break the whole thing down

GK - fine for most of the game, could do nothing with the goals. Few dodgy kick outs in the first half, but was solid apart from that.

Full back line - probably our most vulnerable line in the team. We knew this before lockdown. Until we have a strong defensive spine we won’t be a top 8 county. For me, McKay needs to start at FB with forker and burns/Kennedy either side of him

Half back line - young O’Neill and comiskey out of their depth. Unless injured Donaghy has to be starting at 6

Midfield - Grimley i thought was non existent for most of the game. O’Neill has up’d his game this year. IMO best club player in the championship and Armagh’s best player last night

half forward line - Soupy had decent spells, but we need him firing on all cylinders. Was Nugent injured?

Full forward line - our line that has the most potential, however we are dropping too deep and playing in our own half. Why is Jamie dropping back for? We have a full forward that could match any other county but why aren’t we playing to a system that suits us.

Overall, yes, last nights second half was dreadful. I don’t accept people’s excuse that it’s their first game back etc. That being said, if we rewind back to our last league game in Enniskillen, we would have said we were a D1 team. One game doesn’t ruin our season. Although it seems that when we get a lead in a game, we always go through a period in the 2nd half were we shut off - why is that? Final point, we still have a chance next week in going up, so all’s not lost.

Saying that, some turnaround for Cavan after the thumping we gave them in the first round. Hope the lily whites do a job on them which means next week, all we need to worry about is the W, and not have other results go out way

Perhaps The Kerryman made the most of his opportunity to get it which is fair enough , just on the referee I think he’s up their as one of the best , what was probably annoying our boys was we was picking up fouls that most ref’s miss , while he wasn’t infallible last night he was decent and got most calls right .

Just rewatched the game this morning when there was some peace and quiet
We are more than ready for Division one and we need it to learn more
I thought watching last night that the ref was harder on us in the tackle and that Roscommon got their frees easier
From rewatching the ref was more or less right. Roscommon were smarter in the tackle

Niall Grimley didn't look fully fit and the injury to Soupy late in the first half didn't help
I think the commentator mentioned Armagh had 16 or 17 out with Covid.
That's a huge part of any panel and to have the week before the game to prepare has to be a huge disadvantage.

We were very good in the first half and right up until the 2nd penalty.
After they got that soft penalty we went and hit some great scores. We were strong and doing well.
The sucker punch of two goals in less than two minutes which came from our own mistakes gave them the upper hand and especially since Blaine got a touch to the original shot onto the crossbar.
We scored 15 times which would normally be enough to win a game
I think we really needed a goal after ht to control the game

Pluses - the two oneills, Rory grugan, Aidan Forker were the pick. TV doesn't allow us to see who else was working hard
Minuses - we really need a full back and CHB.
We need to be able to kick out 65yds plus when it's needed.

That is a very strong Roscommon team who will give Galway and Mayo a run for it.
Here's hoping we get to play next weekend and the results go our way

The goals changed the whole momentum of the game. IMO Armagh were the better team for the most of the game but the goals, particularly the two in the second half, were sucker punches that we just could not recover from.

There are many positives to take from the game but for me one major negative was our tactical set up. I hate that ultra defensive system especially when we have one of the best forward lines in the country. In a straight shoot out we should live with the best counties and in the end all the men behind the ball still couldn't stop 3 goals. I think modern managers are more afraid to lose than wanting to win. Pat Spillane talks about how Mick O' never allowed anyone to talk about the opposition before a game and while this is a bit extreme in the modern game I do think we should play with a bit more abandon.

As for John Murphy and Philip Jordan, two bigger shite hawks you couldn't find.

Dust has settled and on reflection that performance wasn’t as “bad” as I felt it was yesterday evening. I think the fact we kept them scoreless for the first fifteen odd minutes and seemed to take control of the game early on; only to almost capitulate with reckless tackles, fouls, penalties and end up chasing the game in the second half; led to much of the “hysteria” on here in the aftermath.
I still stand by my assertion that we are not Division 1 standard. But we aren’t far off it. Defensively is are where are problems are. A lot of individuals being called out, I think it’s harsh because I’m not sure where there are better defenders in the county? A couple of headstaggers aside and a softish penalty, I think we didn’t do *as* bad all considered. I am still a bit sickened that their full back was able to get on the end of a goal move though. Hopefully the men regroup and properly go at Clare, nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Just finished watching game again. Couple of points.

Looking at the Jamar incident I feel he will be unlucky to have any action taken against him. Only he will know if he deliberately caught the Roscommon player in the face area as he was looking away at the time.

As for Rian sending off. As I said before he was silly and should learn. The Roscommon defender was pushing at him - in the neck area too - and Rian stood his ground. Play developed and then Rian caught him late and the Roscommon player went down as if shot. Rian should have known better. Considering the off ball incidents he called against Armagh it was disappointing the referee didn't catch the initial incident though.

Near the end Armagh had got a good score and were gaining momentum when a free was given against Aidan Forker when Armagh won the ball. I have watched it a few times and still cannot see a foul.

We give away too many rash and needless fouls. Roscommon gave away smart frees. We also have too many players mouthing to referee. It gets the referee's back up and is a waste of energy. Concentrate on the next phase. Otherwise you are magnifying any perceived injustice.

Anyway heads up win next match and hope things go our way.
