Armagh hurlers experienced the first defeat of their Division 3A campaign when a decent Roscommon side bagged the two points at the Athletic Grounds on Sunday.
Armagh opened brightly as they rushed into a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 11 minutes with the opener from Danny Magee and four frees from Ruairí Fullerton. A Shane Curley free and a Hugh Rooney effort got Roscommon on the scoreboard, but Magee and Fullerton again from the dead ball on 19 minutes brought Armagh’s tally to 7. Unfortunately, for the Orchard side that would prove to be their final score as the westerners got to grips with the game, winning the lion’s share of break ball against the wind and puahing forward. Three from Pádraig Kelly, one from Curley and one from Conor Mulry drew the match level at 0-7 apiece.

Roscommon made full use of the breeze in the second half as they hit the openijg five scores of the second period, two each from Cathal Dolan and Curley as well as a long-range free from Eamon Flanagan. A Ruairí Fullerton free finally ended Armagh’s 30 minute scoreless spell and the Orchard side received a furter boost when Danny Magee superbly finished his shot on goal to cut the deficit to one. Shortly after, the sides were level again after another converted free from Fullerton. Roscommon however, regrouped and trailed off three consecutive scores, two frees from Dolan and anothet from play for Hugh Rooney. Armagh struggled to make much head way from then, other than two further frees from the solid Fullerton, whilst the Rossies finished with a Cillian Egan effort from play and two further frees from Dolan.

Whilst Armagh will be disapppinted at two points dropped at home, they have two games left to resurrect any chance of reaching a league final. Next Sunday sees an away trip to Darver where Armagh face Louth at 12.30pm and a visit to Omagh the following week to play Tyrone at 1pm.
