Armagh 3-25 Monaghan 1-10
Armagh hurlers ran out comfortable victors over Monaghan in the Athletic Grounds on Sunday to continue their positive start to the 2020 season. Armagh produced a dominant performance right across the field on Sunday, showing some superb fielding and a deadly accuracy to rack up a 3-25 total.
The first half saw the umpires at the Armagh end raise the white flag on 18 occasions. Dean Gaffney scored five, including two from play, with his brother Ryan claiming two. The Curry brothers, Nathan and Odhrán, hit five between them, while their Na Fianna club mate Paddy McBride also got two. Danny Magee hit three and Tiarnán O’Neill also got an early score to put Armagh ahead after Fergal Rafter’s opener for Monaghan. Armagh also added a goal after Eoin McGuinness connected with a long High ball in from Nathan Curry to beat the keeper after 14 minutes. Monaghan had no answer to the drive, intense work rate and scoring blitz of the hosts.

Monaghan hit the first two points of the second half before Eoin McGuinness hit a point and a second goal within 60 seconds. Middletown trio, Paddy McBride, Marty Moan and Déan Gaffney added further points and Monaghan hit another two from Rafter and Mark Treanor. Mark McClatchey, brought on in the second half to make his Armagh senior debut, fired over two points, either side of goals at each end. A poor clearance from an otherwise solid Armagh defence led to a Mark Treanor goal, which was immediately followed up by a Marty Moan three pointer. With time near up Davy Grant hit a good score, which unfortunately was ruled out as the umpire was looking the other way, and Rafter closed the scoring with a 65, after Armagh goalkeeper Fintan Woods pulled off a super save with the Monaghan attack baring in on goal.

This was a second impressive performance from the Armagh hurlers who sit atop Division 3A, alongside their next competitors Longford. Yet again, there were good performances from debutants Oisín Keenan, Mark McClatchey and Fionntán Donnelly and the spread of ten different scorers will certainly please manager, Pádraig O’Connor.
Armagh have a week’s break next weekend, before returning to action on Sunday 16 February with a trip to Longford.
