Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

This weekend last year the U20 brawl v Tyrone took place. Rian O'Neill played that night.

Unbelievable how far he has come in a year. It's not a case of he could potentially be a great footballer for us he already is. Arguably our most important player already.

What is great for Armagh is he is only going to get better.

Just watched the game there, v good game. Armagh rued those missed goal chances. As others have said we should have got a couple of frees at crucial points in the games, Cavan subsequently went up the field and scored. Jamie & Rian were brilliant. Personally I think the management were far too slow to make changes. Campbell was excellent when introduced. Forker & Burns were very poor. I was watching Galway v Kilkenny earlier, KK forward missed an easy score early in the game, Cody pulled him straight away.

All in all Cavan deserved the win, they were very clinical and only missed 3 scores. 6 point loss is hard on Armagh. Here’s hoping for a decent draw in the qualifiers
Thank God Clarke wasn't taken off straight away for his early miss.

Get this season out the way... Don't think it will be long but then we are going to have to gave the talk about management.

I was giving off during the game because it is the same mistakes being made. It is beyond a joke now. The problem is if we get to S8 all will be forgiven.

Ones on here looking a easy team in the qualifiers that's ridiculous playing the likes of Antrim or Leitrim is no good for Armagh

If we beat them & get into the next it is really good for us.
What we need now is to get over the disappointment of today, getting a win would certainly help us & from there we start to rebuild confidence & morale.

Get Tony McEntee in. Then again John took Culloville to the semi final of a Senior championship. That's the equivalent of winning Sam with Waterford :D

Today was one of those days. When you have Jamie missing like that it probably not going to be your day..having said that Jamie was one of our best players today showed his class..unfortunately the damage was done the early missed goals chances seemed to unsettle us for a bit.. I thought soup made a great impact when he Came on. Cavan deserved their victory.. I can understand that people are frustrated. I'm currently hiding out in my bedroom not speaking to anyone but not sure we should be blaming management they didn't miss any goal chances..this ended up a rather long post when my only attention was to see everyone was saying..

I couldn't make it to today's game, as I was hit with food poisoning this morning, so just had to make do with the deferred coverage. The first 10-15 minutes is what killed us. We have said it time and time again, we are not ruthless enough. How we didn't score a goal from any of those chances is beyond me. That let Cavan off the hook and they took full advantage. Some people question Brendan Donaghy's inclusion, but today I think it should how massively dependent we are of him, to marshal the defence and read the play. I'm not saying he would have stopped everything, but we looked so wide open without him there, that it made a difference. Players like Vernon and Paddy Burns were so far off the pace, it was hard to watch at times. Vernon was rightly hooked and I'm shocked that Burns stayed on as he was given the absolute run around. Forker didn't have a good first half and gave the ball away constantly. Paul Hughes broke forward a couple of times, but didn't have the same effect. James Morgan had a far more disciplined game and created some good turnovers. Jarly Og Burns had a quiet game and Niall Grimley didn't have much influence.

Going forward we saw the potential that we have, with Rian O'Neill, Jamie Clarke and Stefan Campbell all have stand out games. But we just gave ourselves too much to do, with some terrible wides and those missed goal chances really biting us. We had our chance last day out and we didn't take it. Cavan have been operating at a higher level than us for a few years and it showed when it really mattered. They got key scores when needed, were clever in how men got forward unchallenged and deserved the win. But it could have been so much different.

I think I'm right in saying that the only teams we can draw at home are Monaghan (as they are division 1) or Down (as they've already played at home against us)? Those two and Derry and Westmeath are the teams to avoid for me.

Lads, we have a manager. He’s called Kieran McGeeney. Whether you agree with him being there or not, show him some respect while he’s in the job.

When he’s no longer manager, then we can discuss a successor. Until then, give it a rest and get behind him and the team for the rest of the season.

I always back McGeeney. Was just an opening to slag Culloville. Windows of opportunity like that can never be passed.

Onwards and upwards. Let Geezer March his troops to the super 8s.

Thoroughly enjoyed today’s game. I’d say that Cavan will be beat by Donegal by 3 or 4 points in the final due to their poor inside forward line but they will make the super 8’s. I expect armagh to be there too!
Watched the first game which was dire compared to the second game. Cavan and armagh went at it 100% and the best team won.
Donaghy suspension was a blow defensively but it sort of made the managements mind up as they had to abandon the sweeper and push up on Cavan kick outs which was what every body was screaming for last week but left us open. It didn’t go to plan but so be it.
Still think armagh will be a super 8 team with Dublin, Meath, Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Donegal, Cavan and us. Mayo to beat Tyrone on the qualifiers!!!! You heard it here first.
Top class game of football by both teams well refereed.
Not far away guys, lots of positives from all 3 games in Ulster and I expect Rory to cut loose if we draw a non Ulster team next time, he looked fired up today after being dropped. Soupy was also pissed off!!!!!
Not far away guys.

Well, this is a tough one to take. An Ulster Final there for the taking and unfortunately we just couldn't get over the line.

Had Jamie buried that goal chance in the first few minutes we could have been home and hosed but it's all its and buts!

Thoughts on the game overall:

Blaine is struggling. Kickouts just aren't good enough for this level. That being said, there seems to be a lack of creativity from lads out the field, unlike Donegal yesterday for example.

Morgan had his best game in a while, disciplined largely and did what would be expected of a good, Intercounty Corner Back.

Not sure about the negativity regarding Burns. McVeety won plenty of ball granted but Burns made a few dispossessions and was robust enough overall. Would have liked to see a few more of his penetrating runs.

Thought Hughes, Grimley, Clarke and Stefan Campbell were the top performers for us on the day.

Shot selection let us down a lot. Few balls on the Keeper's hands and bad wides from silly angles.

Overall, Cavan the better side but I still fancy us to put a nice run together in the qualifiers. Faith needed in Geezer and the lads more than ever.

How did Paddy Burns stay on the pitch? Some wrong selections to start. Vernon Burns Murnin.
I’d say Burns stayed on the pitch because management thought about taking him off and putting a slower player on to mark McVeety and decided against it.

The Vernon one was a complete mystery. Haven’t seen game back yet yet but by my reckoning McKiernan was out ahead of him 100% of the time. Charlie contested/won 0% of that ball and when he did join the play further up the pitch he hit a bad wide when unchallenged and had one simple pass to drill down the line to an unmarked man but looped it up in the air inviting the challenge and putting the Cavan man running in at the advantage. In hindsight the selection was wrong but the deferred decision to sub him unforgivable. We lost the game in that period
