McKenna Cup 2024

Out of ideas when Derry pressed. Lack of ball winning midfielders a big issue. That said don’t expect too many from tonight’s line up to be getting significant minutes in the league

Derry had many chances on goal?
Yes Blaine Hughes saved 2 or 3 great chances and they hit the cross bar, I think I'm the ball we where okay but off the ball we seemed off the pace with tracking runners, and our plan for mcguigan didn't work, we had Higgins on him inside but he just ran out the field and seems like shields was following him, hard to read into as again wasn't a full strength team, crealy, conlon and Blaine Hughes did well, for me kierans and mcconville worked well with little ball but hard to judge

We were beaten in the Ulster final last year because of a lack of a kick out strategy which was also a serious issue the previous year. So far this year we have shown we still have learned nothing. No fault to Blaine tonight by the way, I thought he was excellent but he has to have something to aim for.

It's simply unbelievable how many observers sit in their utopian world and dream up their own version of the perfect game

I thought that, playing a Derry team that featured 9 or 10 first team players, we were adventurous, moving the ball forward quickly when it's the right option and generally played well

Yes there was mistakes but in what game isn't there.
Maybe instead of focusing on the negatives we look at the positives
I thought blaine was excellent, Sean conlon, Tomas McCormack, Ben, Cian, Oisin, Darragh, Ciaran higgins stood out.
Others tried hard
Derry are a good team - they've proved that over the past few years

It looks well for the national League

Blaine’s an excellent shot stopper , I remember seeing him practicing in Croke park before a match and the saves he made was in a different league to Ethan , definitely an option when the dreaded penalties come around again if he can’t shift Rafferty starting .
