Comments on here lol. Awful game, not a great performance but….we’re back where we wanted to be. Make no mistake Down have improved since last year and will continue to do so. Well not be as bad again but will it be enough to win?
Also…that ref should not be given a whistle ever again! The free against Duffy for off the ground! The free against Murnin at the end! Never mind countless other decisions. A poor club ref would do better

Absolutely, I think they will do well in division 2. I had a look at the table for division 3 during the game and thought, well they won but what a shit league, Westmeath were second! Then I remembered that Westmeath gave us a hell of a game last year.

I don't like singling out individuals but the referee had a shocker
Absolute shocker

We went down to their level and won a tight game when we had to

Ulster Final that's what matters
Agree about ref. Seemed to have went bit power mad. Anytime you even looked at him he was moving frees forward.

The Duffy off the ground and the free at the end against Murnin were two particularly bad decisions. Hope that is last time we see him do a match involving us.

Down clearly went in with a plan of trying to disrupt the game at every opportunity. They were very negative but it almost worked.

We missed a few easy chances in the first half and thought we made a lot of unforced errors.

But we won the match which is the most important thing. Performance was far from great and improvement definitely needed. However we probably go into the final as second favourites which might actually suit us.

Can sit and enjoy tomorrow's match hoping they kick lumps out of each other ;)

Semi finals are for winning. No one cares who loses a semi final and they can be notoriously hard. Down only had the objective to ‘not lose’ and then maybe win it on the break. No issues about that as they are on the early stages of their journey.

Questions now move to the final. Tyrone or Donegal? I know most people will expect Donegal, as do I, but anything can happen in a semi. Donegal showed their hand a lot to beat Derry. While they should win tomorrow I think they would be foolish to underestimate this Tyrone team

Tough to blame mcgeeney on that game, Down set 15 in their own half and showed little intent to go forward to create scores. As I said before, our forwards don’t score enough points so if we don’t get a goal against these bad teams it leaves us open for an upset, especially if they get a lucky goal. If we had a competent set of forwards who held themselves to any sort of standard, we would’ve scored more than 3 points in the first half an hour when we had plenty of chances and were completely shutting down their efforts to score. That would have meant Down have to commit more to attack in the second half, playing into our hands as we were turning them over fairly regularly when they tried to attack. We were clearly trying to counter quickly with footpasses forward, but too often the forward either had to turn back because they weren’t capable of beating their man or they were turned over.

I rememeber the argument last year that the other forwards don't play well when Rian is playing like he did today. Is there any basis or reason to why that may be?

The winning score
Mackin puts the ball in front of Murnin
He gets out in front, feeds it to Rian and bang - over the bar
Simple but it works
So why wait until the dying minutes to do it !!!

Sorry im reading it was Duffy scored the winner - i was at the other end of the pitch. But the point remains the same. We have decent ball winners inside but they are not getting near enuf ball

Does anyone know what time the final throws in on Sunday the 12th of May? Will be either 2pm or 4pm as the Leinster final is the same day. Thanks

A typical Ulster Championship game - Down well prepared & we weren't at the races but all about the result. We tend to have rose tinted glasses when thinking about the past - even Joe's great team squeezed out results in Ulster and they won 7 titles!
Great to be back in a big final and a chance for this group to get some silverware - they've all been through the mill (including management) if any team deserves something it's this team. Doesn't work like that unfortunately but we have a chance as underdogs.
I fancy Tyrone tomorrow.

“Joe’s team” won four, technically.

Agree with the rest of your post though.
