Mayo v Armagh

Management issues:

We should have pushed up and pressured their kick outs like we did towards the end and take possession - but much earlier on.

Don't know why Crealy was only given a few minutes. We could have done with him earlier in the forward line. We simply didn't test Mayo under the high ball enough.

Team issues

Unfortunately Blaine Hughes is not a goalkeeper. I don't want to be too harsh on him but if any other forward line tested him the damage would have been significant. However, with that being said we need to improve our defence.

We need to stop doing stupid, childish things in games. I.e. Donaghey dropping his knees into the Cavan player. Shields tripping a player up costing us a point. Stuff like that needs to stop. One liability is fixed (Forker) and another one rears its ugly head.

There needs to be a balance between attack and defence. If we can defend we stop points from being scored or at least make it difficult.

Composure/timing/decision making. This will come with experience but it's something we really need to take a long hard look at.

I would usually be the first one to criticise geezer and there were one or two decisions I would disagree with.

However, management cannot be blamed for referees being biased. They cannot be blamed for Rian O'Neill missing a few shots .

There are things that have to be fixed and hopefully it is done in time for next season.

Going to attempt to be as articulate as possible here after a disappointing but at the same time promising day for Armagh Football.

There were some lads there who put in heroic performances. Jemar Hall is so industrious, Soupy Campbell has it all, carrying the ball, scoring...Jamie in the 2nd Half, what a glimpse of his talent, and Paddy Burns giving Andy Moran a very, very early bath. There's many others, too many to name.

Rian, oh Rian. A raw, raw talent. If he can get a bit more distribution in to his game he'll be a great.

Aidan Nugent has been uncovered as a vital fulcrum for our attack. Learnt from the Cavan game by playing across the box to Rian for the goal. All you can ask is that lads learn.

Jarly Og was poor. I think he's a great prospect but is somewhat one dimensional and so much more is expected and promised from him due to unwarranted media attention. He'd a cracker against Down and the 1st Cavan game but has flattered to deceive somewhat since then. That being said, if he's managed in the right way and coached to his strengths he's a real prospect.

Blaine Hughes, a great lad. Not an intercounty goalkeeper. Simple as. His distribution has been lacking, and he simply should have stopped the first goal. The second goal he was in no man's land a little but possibly a little harsh. What other GKs have we in the county or playing outside the county who are eligible? Do the county hold trials for this?

I really hope Brendy Donaghy gives one more year. He deserves a Super 8s campaign and has more to give, he had a stormer against one if the top 6 teams in Ireland.

All in all, on a disappointing evening, as an eternal optimist, we'll get there. And to get there we need McGeeney. It's obvious that the 33 on the squad have bought in in a big way. This was the most encouraging year as an Armagh Fan for some time. A joy to watch at times from a relatively young team.

Keep the faith...Ard Mhacha Abu!

Lads, if you’d told any of us at the start of the year that we’d have stayed in Division 2, won an actual Ulster championship game ;) and came within a kick of the ball from an Ulster final, before giving a consistent D1 team a clipping in their own back yard and then go to Castlebar and play the only team in the past 5 years who have gotten within a country mile of Dublin and be coming home feeling like we left it behind us, you’d have been laughed at.

Thats the reality of the year we’ve had. I know we have still plenty to improve on to be considered elite, (as have 30 other teams in the country), the kickout issue is still there after all this time, as is the giving away soft fouls and as someone mentioned above, the stupid discipline issues like Shields today and Donaghy in Clones, but the positives with this group far outweigh the negatives.

I think its vital that we keep this team together, Clarke is a huge asset and I really hope he commits again, his scores in the second half today were superb, Donaghy was brilliant again so lets hope he wants another year at it also. This squad and a couple of additions (supposed to be a fella from Cullyhanna that can play a bit of ball if anyone knows his name?) and a fit Oisin O’Neill and Murnin plus whoever else comes in has the ability to get to an Ulster final next year and the super 8’s.

I’ve criticised McGeeney in the past, but today is not the day to be calling for his head although I thought he made a few bad calls, the players left everything out there today so fair play to all involved, just a pity we couldn’t get over this hurdle.
