Ulster Championship 2023

I watched the highlights on TSG last night (I like torturing myself), and McGuigan’s “free” that levelled the game (before the alleged biting incident).

It did look as though Morgan had fouled Mcguigan, but it was the Derry man had his arms around Morgan. No way should that have been a free. Morgan sometimes can be, let’s say, over exuberant in the tackle, but this time he was, as Billy Idol said, an innocent man.

Haven’t watched it but Jesus refs need to be wide for that sort of thing. Does my head in when a forward fouls the defender but makes it look like he is being fouled and the ref buys it

I'm sorry Pat, you are incorrect. It was Billy Joel

The incident at the end of the game is a little more nuanced. I don’t think Lynch does over-carry. He drops the ball in time and then does something quite weird. He essentially stands over the ball like a back-rower in rugby protecting the ball on the ground. He is pushing 2 armagh players and definitely committing a foul.

But some sympathy for the ref. The TV camera angle is perfect angle but that isn’t true for Gough. He probably guessed.

You could argue that the accurate call is a free out for foul by Campbell on Lynch as the first offence.

Even before he dropped the ball I thought Lynch was charging. Caught ball, then charged out and led with shoulder into Armagh player. Probably was charging again afterwards when trying to 'protect' the dropped ball. Tricky enough to call though at the moment

There was an umpire there who probably can count
Ive tried to slow it down and count the steps - I got eight steps - and then watched how he was being tackled.
He was not being fouled by anyone during his eight steps
Credit to the goalie for staying on the pitch - he probably should have been escorted over the line for a '45.

In any other part of the field it's over carrying.

The free from the mark - in my opinion it looks like it was slightly miss hit in that Rory usually gets a lot of height on the ball - this one didn't unless he was compensating for the wind.
Unfortunately no one was in that area when it landed to attempt to fist it on.
Contrast that to Rians 50 earlier where if he'd hit it from the 65m line it would still have went over.

Given that Derry like to blitz teams in the first half and they were AI semi finalists last year we know we should have won
This is the level we are at now

I sincerely hope that injuries are clearing up and that we put out a team that will beat Westmeath and give opportunity to panel members to push for the Tyrone game

I'd expect a few changes for that game with the well established players kept in reserve if needed.

Funny, I thought James Morgan had a very good game on McGuigan for the most part. It was only really in extra time that McGuigan came to life. That was only the second or third full game that Morgan had played all season and it looked like it caught up with him in extra time.

Out of interest. When do get the the 8 steps. Is it after the first bounce or the second?

McCambridge was on him until mid second half. Morgan had a few instances of poor play aside from the fouls, thought it showed that he had been out for a while, particularly in possession. Thought Morgan should’ve been the sub either instead of mccambridge or mcparland. I also spotted that Mcguigan headlocked Morgan for that last free kick, and that’s also why Rian went charging in after. Morgan’s previous rough play went against him in that moment, everyone in the ground thought he had fouled again so didn’t question it. Then mcguigan bit Rian and stole 10 yards on the kick. Hateful shower, hopefully we’re the ones to stop them doing 3 in a row.
