Hard for me to figure out oisin o neills lack of gametime tonight. Hopefully see more of him soon but does anyone actually know rians situation? Is he injured? How serious is it? Have heard a few rumours about problems away from football but honestly dont believe them at all. For some reason armagh are extremely quiet over injured players so we don't actually know who was or wasnt genuinely available tonight ann/or when we can expect to see certain players back in the squad. Also think Rowlands passing range was missed tonight from the mc kenna cup games

We‘ve known about those “rumours” for years. It’s no secret

Personally I feel its important we get promoted this year and first game of the league the result is only thing that matters
I don’t feel promotion to Division 1 is necessary, especially with this new group stage structure in the AI series that allows for a run of games right up to knockout football.

You can win silverware out of division two as shown by Derry and Dublin last year. And going hard all the way through the league can be detrimental to the provincial campaign as we seen with Mayo last year, although our ulster draw is favourable this year.

Main goals in the league should be qualifying for AI series and get good performances out of the team.

Watching Monaghan vs Dublin, the standard compared to our own game is uncanny
And comments here a couple of months back saying Armagh are superior to Monaghan? Give me a break. Monaghan are division 1 regulars for a reason. 2 all Ireland semi appearances in recent years and could always beat us when it mattered.

Was I at the same game I thought Turbo was poor. That 1st goal chance and loss of ball on a few occasions. Conaty I only remember with 1 score. Turbo hit 4 points from frees but missed 4 also.

I would say it was great to have Paddy Burns back and he did cover lots of ground.
Don’t understand why Conaty gets ahead of some others in the forward line. Decision making poor and just not up to it atm.

Such knee jerk reactions on this forum, and a few other social media outlets.
All I heard for the last 2 weeks was how this was going to be a tough match that couldn't be taken for granted, and when it turned out to be exactly that, loads of people aren't accepting of it.

By no means a full strength Armagh side and Louth are/were decent.

I'm convinced that anyone who says "we just need to attack more" and all our problems are fixed... is totally brain dead.
Louth played, quite literally, 15 men inside their own half for large portions of the game and countered - underdogs can play this way now and keep games tight.

"Just attacking more" doesn't get around defences of that type. It requires, playing round the edges, attempting to burst through lines, maybe failing 2 or 3 or more times, resetting, going back and sideways if necessary to move the defence into a new position and trying again.... Or turning over possession and countering when the defence is out of possession.... Or winning contested kickouts in midfield as there will be more space against the defence.

If you don't understand this then it's on you.

If you think just long balling it in will consistently bring success then you are wrong.

Criticism of McGeeney everywhere you turn. Sometimes it's fair when it's sticks on topic but this 5 minute interview that he gave to Armagh GAA here, is there anything wrong or incorrect in it? All seems fair enough to me.

It’s not how close the result is that has caused the reaction. It’s that we haven’t seemed to learn the lessons from our defeat to Monaghan last year.

And what lessons are those?
Don't foul Conor McManus for the last kick of the game?
Don't miss 2 penalties?
Overally defensive systems don’t work against good teams anymore - don’t take away from our attack by starting defenders in the forward line.

The unwillingness to attack at times - main reason we lost against Monaghan. The long spells without scoring are a clear symptom of this.

Watch it again on BBC iplayer. It was Louth who were overly defensive and broke on the counter, we were the team in control of possession for the vast majority. For the most part it was us trying to do the breaking down.

And so, I will reiterate exactly what I said above:

I'm making no claims here that we played well nor did a good job at breaking down Monaghan. But it's January and ba jaysus even last year's 2 AI finalists were beat. It's a building process to peak at the right time.

Exactly this. Well said. Patronising posts that think that people just want Armagh to blindly attack more, miss the point. We played exactly the same way against Monaghan last year and for large parts of the league and championship. As you say starting two defenders at wing forward, when playing at home to Louth isn't a good signal. Going back to the keeper when we are under zero pressure just slows everything down. We've seen that we aren't very good at scoring when the opposition are back and set up, so why do we slow it down and give them more time to get set? Have we looked to fix that in preseason? Time will tell and hopefully when we get more players back, we'll see more of that. If Turbo had scored those goals it would have been a far better performance and score line. Looking forward to the Meath game.

I thought Blaine Hughes had a good game back, judged one dangerous ball in well and distributed well, but wasn't under much pressure from his kick outs (don't think he hit any long at all). One thing we missed from Rafferty was his height under the dropping ball over the cross bar, as there was one and maybe a second that Rafferty would have been able to catch and save from points.
