When you look at what Kerry and Dublin do to teams like Louth they hit them hard and early, Dublin especially always rattled a couple of goals early which killed the game and didn't allow opponents any confidence which Armagh tend to give opponents.

When Armagh squeezed up on Louth they couldn't get out, it's a high risk strategy but one that suits our players and their physicality. As soon as we went two up we dropped of their kick out again, why? Keep the pressure on and make it a 3-4 point lead.

Lots of players to come back and 2 points on a blustery horrible night is the most important
Whilst I agree the Dublin and Kerry games v Louth were very different than last night.

If we're just looking at games on a match-by-match basis then last night was a poor performance and a lucky result against a weaker div 2 side that were always going to put up a fight and will be very disappointed with the result.
Great to see Blaine back playing well, a bit more experience for some of the younger lads and 2 points on the board.

Are they really a weaker division 2 side? They finished 3rd last year. Ahead of cork Kildare and Meath and got to the Leinster final

We all knew that game would be difficult, I personally thought we would win by 2 points in a very tight game when predicting during the week. We won by a point. Bad performance, and one that neither players nor manager will be happy with. Though Louth are not a bad outfit and I could never understand people predicting a facile Armagh win.

Some of the things that went wrong last night can be worked on, miss placed handpasses etc, though some more worrying aspects will need addressing properly. I'd also like to see us line out hard working forwards in the forward line rather than hard working half backs. Duffy would have made a big difference to that performance last night

We will know what way this season is going to play out by next Saturday evening. A poor enough fermanagh outfit got a draw with Meath. So we really do need to be upping the ante and putting a 5 point win together if we are going to do anything in this division.

The Meath result teaches us that Fermanagh are as sticky an outfit as ever! Meath will be under big pressure if they don't get something from AG next week. Makes for a great game!

I get your point but I was disappointed with them last night and thought they were quite poor overall. We were terrible and they still couldn't beat us. Those other 3 teams would have put us to the sword last night no doubt.

Missed the McKenna cup games so last night was my first view of the team in the flesh since the Monaghan match.

There was a lot to be unimpressed by but it’s January and so whilst last night was indicative of a lot of things (and they were mostly negative), it was conclusive proof of absolutely nothing.

If after 4 league games that was the level we were at and that was still the gameplan I would be dismayed and disillusioned. But it’s wrong to jump to that conclusion this early.

I thought Blaine looked assured. Individual defenders were so well protected that it’s hard to judge any of them on one to one battles. Conaty did ok. Turbitt took his frees but definitely could have done better with his goal chances. Soupy was the best of the bunch as he can put a shift in with neat and tidy work and then do that thing that’s a wee bit special. It not only lights up a game but also very often comes at a moment where the momentum shifts in our favour. You can’t coach that.

We were slow and laborious with and against the wind. So there are concerns there but let’s keep our heads for a while yet. Maybe play a 5th forward next Saturday?

I don’t know if they would have. Cork were rank against Donegal for example

Firstly congratulations on 2 points in a game played in tough conditions with a team that seemed to have the bit between their teeth with the new manager , motivation by Mickey Harte as well was also probably a factor , as well as the fact that Louth came third last year in a league that included the All Ireland champions and the Ulster Champions and in my view were seriously underestimated and written off last night by pundits and bookies alike without much thought.

it was clear we were quite disjointed and the warm up games with Dublin and Mayo did not do the job in preparing for the first game of the league .
The thing that stood out for me last night was our game manangement (the absence of it) when we were in a winning position again . This was probably the reason we got relegated , why we didnt win Ulster , and why we didnt get to an all Ireland semi final . Last night once again we gave the oppostion the opportunity to steal a point (which they deserved) when we should have controlled the game .

Bad errors by Stefan who in fairness had a good second half bringing the ball into contact with 3 Louth players and O Neill getting turned over , we have to do better in these situations , against stronger teams we will be punished. The warning signs are there history repeating itself we get back into games go in front and coming down the home straight we have a very poor percentage in winning these tight games , Galways the only one I can remember last year and they had a free kick to level the game.

I am aware its week one in January , however you would rarely see any of the top teams lose 1/2 points leads or give the oppostion the chances in the last minutes the way we do , this is something that we need to improve on .

Good post - and highlights our main failing - even though we played poorly, we got into a winning position - and nearly managed to throw it away. Lack of game management has been evident for the past few years, and that lies firmly on the shoulders of management. We believe that we have good players, especially in the forwards, but we have to be able to kill off opponents or at least kill off a game so that they do not come back at us.
Let's see during the league if we can improve this aspect of our game.

The Sunday game saying all top teams seemed to play front foot football but that Armagh are conservative, they said a few years ago we where attacking bit seemed to have changed, and that we have the forwards to be more attacking. I agree 100% with them
Listening to a Tyrone man again

I hate to agree with Pete The Cheat, but he's right. We saw the top teams really going for it - by pushing up and putting the opposition under pressure. Donegal massacred Cork and we've seen how aggressive they've been - what a turn around in a few months. I think this is going to be the next trend we'll see. If you play conservatively you'll only get so far. The ones who win the big prizes, really push for it now. Hopefully we'll see more of that mindset in our gamep plan over the coming weeks.
