Dr. McKenna Cup 2019

We should take plenty of positives from the mckenna cup. Loads of new faces and some of our returnees getting much needed game time before the league.

We've still quite a few who haven't had game time in the McKenna cup - p.hughes, burns, crealey, o.oneill, murnin, Rafferty. A few others who weren't involved tonight - forker, shields, Kennedy.

Niall Grimley was excellent tonight and great to see Rian O'Neill, soupy and Jamie back although it will take time to gel. Rian is going to be a special player. Personally, I'd like to see him hitting the frees.

Taking Jamie off was a very strange decision. He was causing them serious trouble. Looks like young O’Neill just won’t be taken off. He was average enough tonight despite his massive reputation. But I think he should have made way for a sub not Jamie. For the life of me I don’t understand why we didn’t give the penalty to our soccer star Soupy.
Rian would have put the penalty away with no nerve so would Jamie those players both have no nerve

Calm down folks - things are moving in the right direction. Strong squad now and competition for places. Work on the kick out and keep Rian closer to their goals. Jamie was taken off to rest him for nrxt week. Very encouraging.

A few random points.

1. I thought it was the right decision to take Jamie Clarke off. We need him for league and had played himself into form. The last think needed was for him to be hurt or sent off in closing minutes.

2. Tyrone were really up for this game and the experience they took on shows it was very important for them to win. Despite being a man down Armagh were always in it despite 3 if their subs being cubs finding their feet.

3. Picking on the keeper for the kick outs is wrong in my opinion. On a few occasions I noticed the kick out heading for an Armagh target only for a Tyrone man to intercept because his marker had let him run free.

4. Morgan was unlucky to be sent off for the second yellow. He slipped on the turf and that is how he caught the fella.

5. McNamee will be extremely fortunate if he doesn't get a substantial ban. He punched McKay 3 or 4 times before McKay tried to defend himself and used the jersey to incapacitate McKay. If he did that on the street he would be in trouble. He then went to start again after he got sent off.

Overall fairly happy but the real business starts next week.

Lots of positives tonight yes but I'm entitled to my opinion that our tackling was very poor in general. It is an area to work on. There are always areas to improve and I'm not afraid to say what they are.
Of course you are. But at least acknowledge that there was good tackling and overall there has been an improvement over the last couple of seasons

Losing last night was a bit of a disappointment, especially to Tyrone, but I can't say that I'm that bothered. We all know that Tyrone have been operating at a high level than us for nearly a decade now. They are one of the top teams in Ireland, with a deep panel of players to chose from and last night it showed that they are further ahead than us. But I think that what most fans wanted to see was us be competitive, which we were and for some better finishing, we could have won that game. The McKenna Cup has served it's purpose for us. We have gotten the maximum amount of games out of it, we've played some top teams (even if some of them haven't been at full strength) and won, we've introduced some new players to the panel and some of them have shown a lot of promise, other players who've been on the panel for a while and played sporadically have developed more and look more capable at county level and we've got some of our best players back and they are performing well. Our fitness levels will be high and have played plenty of football to get up to speed. I think that we are in a good place going into the league and we'll need to be because everyone of our games now is going to be competitive and we are going to need to play well to pick up points.

It was pleasing to see us stay with Tyrone and not throw in the towel when in the past we might have done. There were a number of needless turnovers last night, with sloppy passes or bad decisions, which Tyrone just pounce on and scored off. Every team will turn the ball over in a game, but it's the ones when we are under no pressure to give the ball away or run up a blind alley or put a player in trouble with a poor pass that are so frustrating.

I thought Niall Grimley had a good game, but that free at the end was a big miss especially when he'd nailed all the others. Stefan Campbell got some good points from play. Defensively we looked better I thought, even though there was some poor tackling. Kick outs were a problem and again it showed the level that Tyrone are at they were able to make it so difficult for us to find our men. I think James Morgan is a brilliant defender, but his gun-ho approach, launching into players on the ground and his over enthusiastic tackling gives away frees. I thought it was harsh to a second yellow as he clearly slipped and then collided with the player. Tyrone also got some frees which clearly never were, but that happens in every game.

It's been a good campaign, with some tough matches that should really set us up well for the league.
