Is it time for Kieran McGeeney to go?

The question was inevitably going to come up and it can't be dodged now.

Listen I don’t think He won’t be going anywhere next year , they will hardly sack him after promotion but everyone has a right to comment , I was referring to the fact that the poster in question is relentless on the topic , it’s a pity he not playing corner back for Armagh because he never gives up .

:D a much needed laugh.

I don't think promotion will save him this time. Personally, I think he only got the extra year because of how narrow the loss was against Mayo. Hence only getting the one year extension and not an additional three.

McGeeney is an Armagh man through and through and NOBODY should be making it personal against him. However, it doesn't make him impervious to criticism or being let go from the job. It is not just the county board that has to make a decision but he does to - his managerial reputation is on the line.

Donegal have a minimum of 5 midfielders they can use and are all of quality. After todays performance I doubt we even have 1. Are management responsible for alienating back up options away from the panel because they aren't being used? I don't want to go back to 2014 but we had the making of a good midfield with Aaron Findon but has even been used once under McGeeney?
I agree we badly needed a ball winner to compete in the air round the middle and Findon fits that perfectly - but does he offer anything else? Does he he have the fitness to run the pitch?

Perfectly sound questions but nobody has seen him for 6 years to answer the question. He is only 27 and still has another 4-5 years in him if he is able to commit. On another note, where did Gavin McPartland/McVerry/ Ethan Rafferty?

Think everyone can admit that next year expectation is to be relegated back to Div 2 - no shame in that so long as it isn’t 10 point defeats!

if that is the case and we don’t get to a QF or Ulster final then we are likely changing McGeeney then

I think this game came down to players underperforming. We were set up well but let scoreboard get away from us and then lost the plot

Think some players showed they aren’t footballers Sheridan, Morgan, Kennedy burns
Can only have a few of these players
Donegal let Morgan run up the pitch at will but he can’t shoot or find a pass

IMO McGeeney will get another year but I think we should be putting a new team in beside him and work towards 2022
That means replace some squad members who don’t seem to have it or are running out of years

as some have mentioned there has been little turnaround in squad members and maybe McGeeney very loyal to those in the group already

I will say that I enjoy watching Armagh play and a few years ago we played terrible defensive football
So credit to this team and management for going against defensive system

He’s been used plenty and isn’t good enough

I do feel bad for McGeeney when it comes to his backroom team...I tend to get the impression a lot of them are nomads or are just not up to the standard. However, it is down to him surely who comes in? When we were getting wrecked in the last few minutes of the first half it looked to me like he didn't know what to do and that has been a serious flaw of his since taking over.

Paul Grimley and McGeeney seemed to have Kildare fired up and for Armagh is 2014.

Maybe so, but is McGeeney a competent enough manager to oversee the big changes this team still has to make to be the good football team many here believe we can team we aspire to be. Does he have the ability to identify our key weakness and the coaching and managerial ability to address them, is he playing to our strengths ie getting the best out of our players? Does he have the tactical awareness to make key changes when needed? Are Donegal much better now than they were back then, after all they were only after winning the AI two years earlier. Are we that much worse than we were back then? In my opinion, were not. The role of manager isn't a token role it's the most important in any county setup as whoever has it leads the setup and sets the culture of the team. Is there better out there more suited to the job? Is he a better manager than Mickey Harte was? If not why are we sticking with him.
Did you read the post i put up about 2014? Did you see the defence we had then and have now? We are a lot worse. Donegal are better. Why bring Mickey Harte into it?

The point is Mickey Harte won 3 AI as a manager and only lost to Donegal by two points in the prior round, a much more competent manager than McGeeney and he still lost his job.

At county? I haven't seen him

I would be interested to see what MH would do with Armagh even if it were for just two seasons. However, I don't think Armagh matches Tyrone in terms of finances.

Fook micky harte ya mad man wouldn't want him. Mc entees would like to see them... Mc geeney looks like he wouldn't listen to anyone he knows best. Personally I don't think sherdian mccabe or conor o Néill should be starting today an I've thought that against derry. Jc is too far out the field worse game I've ever saw soupy play

Wouldn't go to watch them if Micky" diving instructor" Harte took over.

Simple fact is after 6 years we were tactically poor today. Donegal knew our weakness and exploited it. Pundits on sky even highlighted the kick out as a area we struggle. Our best defender who is an attacking threat also forker was tied up with Murphy. Mccabe is not County standard and player decisions suprising....Donaghy is our best full back. McKay was his back up. 1st defender used normally McElroy to run and none used again today. Rafferty on bench never got a sniff . Turbo was doing well in league and dropped again. As a manager he appears to make some weird decisions.

We were promoted but is a new approach needed? Sorry but yes from me

Like bcb says money talks and I think that is one thing Mcgeeney is good at,
You look at Glass McKenna and the big fella from Cork that scored the goal against Kerry all came back from Australia and where brought back in to they’re county teams.
We had two players back in Ohanlon and Ross Mcquillan who where both in the county panel before they went down under and either mcgeeney is that stubborn or thick he won’t ask them back or he doesn’t rate them
Both of them are better than half of the players that started or came on today
Management is about man management and getting all your best players playing.
Up until today I was actually happy enough this year apart from the Laois game

He's that's thick I think... It's his way are the highway an personally I think young people are a lot different than what he was use too. Which is why it's unattractive Ross mc quillian an them type of lads would have jumped at it

Too many on here wear rose tinted glasses - seeing ordinary club players as great county players .
But we should be doing better ' and 6 years without any real progress means it is time we had change.
Question- if he was not a past player (and a great one) - would he get as long in the hot seat? Not a chance.
People from other counties laugh and cannot understand why we have had him for so long.
Get the interview panel ready.

Both have yet to prove it in a Armagh jersey
