People giving off about Cian playing a deeper role, McGeeney unearthed the best wing half in Ireland after playing Jamie Clarke in the role so let the man do his thing.

Not gonna happen but team I'd like for first league game

B Hughes

P mcgrane
C Higgins
B mccambridge

Conor O'Neill
Greg mccabe
J og burns

S mcpartlan
B crealy

J kierans
R O'Neill
T Kelly

C turbitt
O oneill
C mcconville

Bench of
S magill
C cumiskey
S campbell
O conaty
E Woods
C mackin
A mckay
C ohanlon
N rowland
N grimley

That team has all young players and some that are regulars so should be good enough
I'd keep all the older player off the team for most of the league and save them for championship football,
So that would mean
Grugan, Morgan, Rowland, murnin, forker, burns, shields and the likes but would give a few games here and there to build fitness, we know what the likes of mckay and other regulars we know what they can do and the cullyhanna lads are probably gonna be on a few weeks break and so I'd save them also, id like to see a younger team at least for the first couple of weeks see how they get on, my championship team will be very different

You’ve to name a 26 man panel with 4 standby players in case of late injuries.

It’s tough to want too much risk in the team selection for the league when anything less than promotion will be seen as failure. Derry played a near first choice team every game and marched through it last year, Dublin mostly strolled through with a few older lads sitting out, though they had a few close games they could have lost. I’d rather see the Derry approach, treat every game as a must win with no room for error, show the standards are being met and get some real positive belief and momentum behind the team.

Would want to see a balanced approach. Need to be getting promotion for sure but no point burning out the likes of Grugan and Forker. Should be beating likes of Louth and Meath fairly handily but obviously can underestimate no one. Hope Oisin O’Neill plays every game as I’d say he just needs as much football as possible and he’ll be a a huge player for us. Massive year for Rian as well as last year was just nowhere near good enough. The lad has the ability to be dragging us to all ireland finals but just isn’t showing it. Hope he can shut the doubters up this year.

Cian McConville, McGrane and other young lads who’ve shown well in the McKenna cup and the challenge games need to get their chance in the league as well or we’ll never know if they’re good enough.

Very open yes but consider the possibility that no first choice defenders were playing and a middle third who could not win contested possession makes it a different game.

The thing about kick outs, regardless of who is in nets, if any team press up against Armagh and there are not players capable of winning primary possession or break balls, as was the case last night, your return on your own kick outs will be awful.

Hughes hit some excellent kicks to wide areas when the opportunity presented itself. When there were no options available the long kick to midfield is the only thing a keeper can do, if your team is unable to win a fair share of these then blame has to lay at the outfield players. Where else are they meant to kick the ball to?

Dependent on injuries or maybe 1/2 curveballs would expect something like:
1. Hughes
2. McCambridge
3. McKay
4. Forker
5. C O’Neill
6. McCabe
7. J Burns
8. Mackin
9. McPartland
10. Hall
11. Campbell
12. Kelly
13. Turbitt
14. O O’Neill
15. Murnin
You’re leaving rian out?

Rian O’Neill: impact sub!

Only recently returned to training so there’s a possibility he may not be in the starting 15. If he was likely to start I would imagine he would have been playing against mayo yesterday or at least got game time against Derry.

Obviously if he is on form and picking your best team he’d be in. That selection is just what I think will start this first league game.

Must be carrying a knock or he’d have been playing Mayo?
Maybe he did play a part against mayo and just made up numbers on the bench. Geezer made it back in time so he could have been in the same boat. Possibly only 2 starters v Derry's 9, nothing too much to worry about, Id suggest that team/subs that took to the pitch is 25-45 in the pecking order at present as its clear from the approach, friendly games against Dublin and mayo are deemed better prep for the league so who are we to argue.

On the game itself, wont get too annoyed but thought more players played themselves out of a spot on the squad than put their hands up, little disappointed in the displays by Callum O'neill, Sheridan, O'Hanlon and the 3 experienced half backs who lack speed and mobility at this stage in their careers. On the plus thought Ben worked hard and looks in good shape and has added a bit of bulk to his frame and took a good point from range, and young Conlon done well in corner back. I also feel in todays game as someone else alluded too above, you need your best long range shooters coming from deep and being able to kick a point from 45 yards, so I expect forker and rafferty to play a big part, and both O'Neills to spend a lot of time further out from goals (I would start Oisin inside for counter attacks but once its bottled up drift out to the middle and try and get a shot off in the second or third wave of attack).

I agree it's a group of players who probably never played before, I feel a few of the lads have moved down the pecking order, wouldn't read to much into Callum O'Neill as he played midfield which isn't his position, roll on the league so we get a real feel for where we are

I seen Stephen sheridan going down the tunnel with the players yesterday. He must be back with them.
He would be well down the order at this stage surely? He's had some good moments in an Armagh shirt. You could never question his commitment and he got the most out of his ability. At this stage you'd be thinking that Grimley, Crealey, McPartlan, Mackin and the O'Neills would be ahead of him. He could be there setting standards for the younger players and driving things on in training.
