Much better in 2nd half- especially in the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half. And then a poor kick out and penalty let them back into it. But a win is a win. We were the better team but need to play better against the better teams.

Overall pleased with tonights performace, particularly the 3rd quarter. Good workrate, counter attack and physicality in what is always going to be a dogged fixture. We have come a long way from Geezers early management days in division 3.

Strong performances by O'Neill, Campbell, Forker and Grugan in particular. Just seen Soupys post match interview, he felt he should have been substituted for his poor performance rather than getting MOTM - says alot about mentality and expectations players have set for themselves.

Overall good performance by Rafferty, strong on the kickouts and nice to see him continuing to contribute to the score line. Silly penalty, was one of those things and I'm not going to give it more headpsace than it deserves.

Slightly uncomfortable with this zonal defencive setup, worked tonight and turned over alot of Monaghan attacks, but will prove a bit too loose however for more aggressively attacking teams like Kerry and Dublin.

Glad to see Grimley back after a horrible injury - would like to see him starting for upcoming games. Great fielder and a smart footballer.

Rians work rate and physicality is immense. Defending on our own end line, taking marks under the high ball and scoring some superb points from play. Firm believer that the best is yet to come from this lad.

Plenty to work on though, lots of wasted opportunities and lazy tackling, particular Hall - he needs to address this as it will cost us at some point.

On a side note, glad to see Armagh staying on the pitch at half time and allowing the other team to go into the changing rooms first - I would really like to see this year through without controversy or mass "brawls".

May also need to consider bringing back the retro goalie jerseys of Benny Tierney's day - not sure how the lads could pick Rafferty out amongst the blues.

Great to come away with 2 points in what will be a very tight division.

Bit of a mixed bag from Armagh, but it is good to get the league off with a win, every point on the tables eases the pressure. The Armagh shooting in the first half was not up to scratch. Great period from Armagh at the start of the second half. Good use of the mark, I'm not sure this is a helpful rule rule but if it exists then it is good that we have a plan to make full use of it.
We'll have harder games, this one gives us plenty to work on.

Some other decent performances of note
Murnin was excellent in spells
McKay looked sharp
Conor O Neill played well
Great 2 points considering we were missing 4-5 potential first 15 starters from last year
Anyone know what the story is with Ciaran Mackin and James Morgan

Poor first half. First ten mins of the second half were excellent. No team can live with us when we play like that. Slipped back into old habits a bit after that.
Though McKay was excellent. Was happy with McCambridge’s performance also. Nugent couldn’t buy a free tonight

Great win tonight to set us off the mark first league game always tricky especially away from home so always a bonus to get 2 points on the road

One downside I don’t like the zonal marking it will cost us in games down the line

Conor o Neill , murnin and mc Kay excellent
Would have cruised home but for the mistake which led to the penalty but was impressed how we managed the game out
Onward and upwards we are a decent side

Never really got settled to watch the game.

Saw Rafferty almost losing possession and conceding the penalty. I think there will be teams who have a plan for him this league campaign.

Monaghan are probably going to be in a relegation battle and this could include us so delighted we got the points.

One thing of note even though it didn’t come back to bite us.
Every long standing Armagh fan has witnessed the number of late leads we have given up so in that context Rians long feee Which beggan caught and started their last attack was unforgivable.
How have we not trained these match scenarios properly. That ball had to be played short and possession retained.
Monaghan could easily have worked a goal on that last play and once again it would have been completely our own doing.
That passage of play annoyed me. We continually talk about learning but there was no evidence of it there.

I would move the forward mark into the contested 21 yard area.

Allowing it to be made within the 45 area is ridiculous.
It’s ridiculous full stop - a free for catching a ball. The art of defending is gone and the art of winning your ball & taking your man on is gone too. The Murnin mark would make your scrotum crawl. It’s a absolute nonsense and I hope Burns, if gets president, gets rid of it to feck

I had spotted this in our McKenna Cup matches & hoped it would continue, like you I'm delighted to see this happening. My Dad had stated last year that this is what they should do, gather in a group away from the opposition, takes any opportunity for an altercation away.
