National League 2019

Disappointing yesterday, on one hand (as Jim McCrory said after the game) it’s times like this where pride in the jersey is questioned, would an Armagh team of early noughties performed like this? Even in a dead rubber game, surely the desire is to win for the county? That’s something that can’t be coached, players need to take it upon themselves.

HOWEVER, players have had a tough campaign with 7 tough matches and that can’t be ignored. We may have thrown a few games away, but the priority was to stay in division 2 and we got that. Job done.

Surely even the most cynical can be hopeful that realistically we could have won every game in the league, Kildare, Meath and Donegal were due to them being more experienced in high level football in my opinion. Clare was out of our control. To go from competing in division 3 for 2 years against the likes of Offaly and Sligo, to being within a few scores of every team in division 2 cannot be underestimated, call me an optimist but since the start of 2017 this squad has been building and they are progressing all the time. 7 tough games is excellent preparation for down come may.

Player wise, no one in the team puts more pride in the jersey than Aidan forker. May be one of the most skilled attackers on the panel but puts his head down and performs the toughest role on the pitch, link player between defence and attack. Stephen Sheridan also shows the leadership/passion but we have a massive amount of potential in midfield. Clarke has shown a lot of good play but I still believe he is rusty and he and Campbell’s best won’t be shown until the summer.

sometimes we have shown a lack of fluidity in attack, but I believe with more training all the new/retuning players will gel greatly.

Overall, some glimpses of excellence but some lack of fluidity and mistakes, but I expect this to be ironed out before may. Congratulations to players and management.

Also, maybe the reason Ross mcquillan hasn’t been playing is because management don’t want to risk the lad getting injured with his AFL trial coming up? Just my guess

Can I just add to that, that I wouldn't have been one of Jamie's biggest supporters. Hugely talented lad no doubt, but I never believed he gave 100% or just wasn't as capable as we believed. This year I have changed my mind completely.

Jamie has shown a new side to his game. All the undoubted skills are there, but now he plays as if he cares. He'll constantly talk to all his team mates. He'l point them where he wants them. Other times it's as if he's explaining the plan and getting them into position - and they listen. He covers every area of the field and seems to be really enjoying it (as I've said in another post). To me Jamie is captain material. I wouldn't have said that a couple of years back. He's not the finished article yet, but like others, improves with each game.

On Jamar, from back on the old forum, my opinion on him was well known and hasn't changed. A super talented and committed player. For this point I will compare him to Jamie. I just wish he would play a bit "cuter" and stay down when "fouled". Both these lads take a lot of punishment during a game and just want to keep going. THEY have the pride in the jersey others should follow! (PS the lads in my opinion are all fully committed.)

Excellent post @Nab14 & reflects my own feelings on our league campaign. I am certainly not disheartened by what I have seen to date, it has been a positive campaign with a few blips but I feel everything points towards progress.

Very disappointing if true that Higgins has left. I'm not sure if he was carrying injuries or not but it seems ridiculous that he didn't get more game time considering some of those who were frequent starters

Which frequent starters should he have been in ahead of

It must be tough when you put so much into training and getting ready for matches and not to see much, if any game time. But I'm sure that that is also made clear to the players from the start of the season. It could be that you are on the panel for a couple of seasons, putting the work in and getting ready physicality and in your ability, to play county football consistently. It's easier for some than others to make the step up, so some players may have to wait longer than others to get their chance.
