I was seriously annoyed yesterday to see Andy being taken off exactly at the point where we needed a goal and the only lad we can trust with the best hands I've seen for some time is called ashore. Bumped into a guy afterwards and was told he [Andrew] took a heavy knock, off the ball towards the end of the first half, but insisted he was fine for the second half. He stuck it as long as he could before having to give in. Turns out you need to know the facts before criticising! Who'd have thunk'd that??
I could see he was injured but thought it happened about ten mins before he came off rather than the end of the first half

Aye I suppose when I thought about it he did look a bit slower before coming off, but you know yourself the way you get caught up in the game and forget the obvious, just because our best chance of creating a goal was leaving the field. Having said that, I thought moving Shieldsy up front created havoc and was a great disrupter!

I was sitting in front of Paul Earley, sound man by the way and he thought it was a great move by mcgeeney moving Sheilds inside as you said created havoc and a great passer of the ball.

He could be a missing link and seems to like the dirty ball. sort of like Martin O'Rourke used to do around the middle.

I would keep Shields in there goand my forward to next year
Yes I'd agree. Maybe because he's that little bit older and cuter and more capable of thinking where to place himself.

Only thing is we really need to up the ante on our defence. I know we have quite a few new lads coming in from the under 20s, but most seem to be thinking along the lines of the forwards.

We never did find a replacement for that role once he hung the boots up did we.
Exactly and we can say that about a few, in particular our midfield. Still not a settled pairing there after all this time. We've great midfielders, but usually used elsewhere - Ok I'll have to concede Charlie does great work around the middle, but we need a big ball winner there properly. Stupidly the best ball we won in the middle yesterday was by Andrew Murnin. This would help our keeper out too, who I think had a good year. Yeah he messed up a few, but like I said in another post, name one player that didn't!

I said yesterday we need 1 Andrew Murnin in the full forward line & 1 in the middle of the field :) The height he gets up is unbelievable & what a pair of hands, once he has caught the ball it sticks. He's had a fantastic year for us & hopefully many more to come.

Saturday was probably one of the games of the year so far for entertainment value. Emphasis from both sides very much on attack, and that probably at the expense of defence. Although we were beaten, Saturday was far from a disaster for us in that we went toe-to-toe with a team who are further up the rankings and gave quite a good account of ourself, playing some nice football into the bargain. I'll have to confess that making the Super 8s would have been something I would have been a bit nervous about - I think we'd have been really up against it, particularly given our recent run of hard fought games in very high temperatures.

I thought Roscommon were the better team - they seemed to last the pace that wee bit better and had a stronger bench which helped in the hot conditions, and I thought our recent matches - particularly the Clare game - may have impacted on our lads. Some of our attacking play and point taking in the first half was top drawer stuff, but we missed some big scores at crucial times and when we run out of steam, Roscommon stretched the lead to six points which I thought was a wee bit harsh.

Many have talked here about the players dying with their boots on and that makes me laugh a wee bit because it is so on the money. The players left it all out there on the pitch. I've often said that I'll be happy if our players play with spirit, determination and pride in the jersey and Saturday was just that - indeed it was a continuation of the Clare game in that respect. They gave it their all and as a supporter you cannot ask for much more.

2018 is over, and of course there have been ups and downs. We got promoted and went up as Champions. We had a disaster in Enniskillen in the first round of the Championship, but to be fair, the players and management regrouped and went on a qualifier run that brought us to the last twelve and that run was marked by a great attitude and playing some lovely attacking football. It wasn't perfect of course - there were a lot of individual errors across the games, but nevertheless there was a sense of positivity and energy around the thing.

I think we can now look forward to 2019 with renewed enthusiasm. We have blooded some good new and young players and if we can get some of our absentees back, then we should hopefully be able to hold our own in Division 2 and of course with playing at a higher level it might be possible to aim to reach the last eight tis time next year.

Onwards and upwards! :)

wasnt able to get to much football this year through one thing or another but there seems to be a positivity around this team that hasnt been evident in a while. When you consider the age profile of the team (bar a couple of stalwarts), the possibility of a few of the under-20s making a significant step up next year and also the fact that we had 8-10 missing through various reasons, its been a successful year. If a few of those boys - Soup, the O'Neills, Morgan for example were available next year it really changes the complexion of the team. Could others like Jarly Burns etc commit and/or make the step up? Who knows. One this is for sure though, it would seem that Geezer has turned the popular vote in his favour this summer, Fermanagh aside, setting out the team to rack up big scores. We can go into 2019 with anticipation rather than apprehension.

Shots fired by mcgeeney in today’s Irish news

“McGeeney’s parting summer shot was aimed at the negative voices that have been in “players’ ears” bemoaning the merits of playing inter-county football.

“At times you listen to a lot of shit outside – usually from people who haven’t a clue,” said ‘Geezer’. “They sit outside and they pontificate.

“I played against a lot of these fellas and they were f***ing useless back then and they’re still f***ing useless.

“Some of the stuff they come out with, trying to tell young fellas, just because they’re better than them. These young fellas that are coming through are really good lads, genuine, well-mannered and good commitment to it, but these fellas have to be in their ear telling them because they’re afraid that they’ll do something that they couldn’t do.

“I think they should be given a bit of a break and let them make their own decisions. They want to play at this level and, what’s more, they’re capable, very capable.”

That right there! This is on the money!!!

It's the same feeling we had a couple of years back after Donegal in Croke Park. This time feels different though. It's as if we finally have a momentum building. The foundation is laid and hopefully we build this time rather than regress like before. For that reason we need the set-up to remain.

One hope though and something which has been nagging at me since all the talk of the "hope of players returning" or new lads coming in. It would destroy what we have achieved if the lads that gave all this year (and indeed the last couple of years) were set aside to accommodate the new talent. They MUST earn that place. They MUST be introduced as a "vital" sub and prove they are against worthy. Not just an automatic shoe in. No better way to alienate the lads that drove our revival this year.

An example is Jamar Hall. Several will remember the posts I made on the old official Forum, calling for him to be given a chance. He finally got it and grasped it with both hands and feet. He will develop further as part of this set-up and should not be sacrificed in the same way that the likes of Oisín Mac Íomhair has been. Another that has been around but never given proper respect. Reminds me a lot of Nippy Swift. Super talented lad that was always sacrificed until he had had enough and left.

Ok so only 15 can start and 6 more can play and I'm totally with the best 15-21 being used, but if your gonna introduce someone they at least deserve time to show what they can do.

What started off as a good year by gaining promotion, followed by a dismal performance in the first round of the championship has now ended up in what seems to be a ‘successful’ championship with a good run in the qualifiers. This seems to be nearly the Geezer template as that’s very reminiscent of what happened with kildare. A steady improvement and some players stepping up at different times. The question I would ask, and just indulge my devils advocay, is this an improvement on last year? The teams that were beaten last year were a much higher calibre than this year. Kildare and Tipp last are much better than Clare or Westmeath this year. I don’t want to be seen to piss on people’s chips but for 65 minutes of the game versus Clare we were second best and should have been beaten. We weren’t and that’s all that counts and a lot of credit goes to the players for that. The thing is I recall the same conversations I had around this time last year with people as I had today and will have again next year. For all the ‘success’ and investment of money and time we are out of the championship before the 12th July and the only Orange men marching from here will have sashes and bowler hats. McGeeney has earned next years tenure but I am sorry for being a curmudgeon but next year there has to be a bit more deliverance. A realistic target is an Ulster final....or even an Ulster championship match being won!!! Whatever needs to be done to get the best team on the field must be done and that is his responsibility as manager. I’ll laid them for making something out of the season that looked lost after Fermanagh but i won’t get caught up in the upward waves of a few qualifier wins against weak opponents and 1 7 minute burst against Clare.

New to this but here is my twopence worth. No doubt in my opinion this year has been a success, Playing a great style of football most games i attended this year was entertaining, excellent year for Paddy Burns Jemar and Ryan McShane expecting another good season next year. Next year is a year we should competition for places.. We should have James Morgan, Paul Hughes Jamie Clarke O'neill Brothers Soupy, adding to the experience gained by Jason Duffy and Ross Mcquillan who both look great footballers . A fit again Dyas along with returning of Ethan Rafferty. Your talking you could have 12 forwards going for 6 places which is only good for the panel. Competition for places and a higher standard of football in division 2 will bring the players on again. Could we win an ulster with these players commiting yes.. Compete for an All Ireland no chance Kerry and Dublin miles away from the rest. Super 8's should be the target for next year and Target an Ulster Championship maybe win one game lol The major positive on this is that returning players wont be guarantee a place in the side like previous years. (Positive Outlook)

@bcb1 don't apologise for an opinion - "but I am sorry for being a curmudgeon but next year there has to be a bit more deliverance." I'd be in the "tinted glasses" classroom, I'm sure you know, but fully agree with your sentiment. You haven't said anything I wouldn't say. Optimistic about the future, yes, but nervous about the deliverance too.

My faith in what Kieran can achieve has been broken and as I said in an earlier post I feel we are back where we were a few years ago against Donegal and in truth that just isn't good enough. We should have moved on significantly from that. We need theses new lads incorporated and performing regularly especially as our clubs are losing out because of it.

All that said I am still really looking forward to getting going again in January! Ate we there yet??

EDIT!! No this is definitely not an improvement on last year. It may well equal it on feel good without the devastation Tyrone delivered!!

We went toe to toe with Roscommon until almost injury time, it it was for the extreme heat that sucked the energy and mental ability out of our lads, thing would have turned out differently. We were the only team that had to play in the midday sun two weeks in a row “only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun” and we had to do it twice.
We will see where Roscommon reach, They are a top team

K. McGeeney should not be reading or talking that negative stuff, it effects your judgment. He should rise about it and think and talk more positively. The lads but not value on what he says than any one else
