If we can take our defensive display from the first game against Cavan, and our attacking play from the replay then Monaghan will be worried
I didnt think our defensive display in the first Cavan game was anything to write home about tbh, we conceded 16 scores (normal time). 16 points would have won 85% of games to date in this years championship

Yes we have forwards that can score but that doesn't mean we give the opposing team a free ride when they get a chance to score. All teams have to focus on is defending against our forwards and when they are taken out of the game it means there forwards will be more effective.

Please can we just do a bit of work on sorting out our ability to defend. We really do need a team that can do both.
I can't disagree with the sentient in your post, but can't agree entirely either. Allowing them [almost] free reign for kick outs is irritating, but we did some fantastic blocks yesterday and a lot of really good dispossessions. I'm more worried that we don't move the ball fast from defence to attack, thinking in particular on how Donegal did it on Saturday evening and Cavan yesterday. When we did we scored. When we pushed up on their kickouts (as already pointed out) we did really well and several times got in to their "fantastic" keeper and forced crucial errors. I saw that as a weakness and was disappointed when we didn't capitalise that. I think if we'd have sustained that pressure he'd have cracked and lost confidence, but it's only a thought. I can't prove or disprove that.

I also thought Blaine Hughes was a lot more confident as a keeper yesterday. He won the high ball several times and broke tackles solidly a number of times. I think he possibly made two restart errors and I was watching what he did. Often called players putting the ball where he called them to, but they didn't make it or didn't try. We did win a lot more mid field ball when we got going.

The fact that Jarly Og, (Jarlath Og, JOB, Jarlath Og Burns or whatever you use to refer to him) was suffering from the get go, accounts for his lack of form. I genuinely didn't get how that is anyones fault on either why he was started or it wasn't noticed before throw in. Dehydration is not easy to see or diagnose. Even the sufferer won't be aware until they feel weak. By then it's too late and only treatment with fluid and glucose will help.

I was worried about our defence before the game. Strange that when our manager was one of the best in the business.

Monaghan was probably the draw that everyone was looking to avoid. I think it's fair to say that they haven't been reaching the same standards this year as previous years, but the sight of us coming into town will fire them up no end and for that I'm worried. They have class players all over the field. Beggan is arguably the best keeper in the country. Drew Wylie is as good a full back as there is going. Ryan Wylie can mark the best forwards in Ireland. Karl O'Connell is game changer with his speed and runs from deep. Fintan Kelly is a top class player. Kieran Hughes is a juggernaut in midfield. Conor McCarthy is mercurial and Conor McManus is one of the top 5 forwards in the country. So while they haven't been going well, they have more than enough quality to turn it on if they click. We would have had to have played a top team at some stage to get into the Super 8's, but I would have liked a more straight forward draw to get us up and going again after yesterday. I think we can match them and have the players to beat them, but it will be a tough game.

Re: Mr Burns’ dehydration. Would he not have been dehydrated because of the fluids lost during the match?

I remember at USA 94, FIFA wouldn’t allow water to be taken, and Ireland players suffering from dehydration. Steve Staunton in particular.

Beating Monaghan is very complicated yet very simple. Cannot give away easy frees, because Beggan and McManus will turn those into scores every time. James Morgan will be the most important player for Armagh. Have to imagine he’ll be put onto McManus as he’s the best man marker, and it’s critical that he plays with discipline and doesn’t give away silly fouls

Based on form and fitness - can Burns and Murnin be picked?

Not frightened at all about playing Monaghan. For players, management and fans alike if you are not for this type of game then what is that you want out of the game?

It’s been mentioned here already but the avoidance of freee conceded is key. Anyone thinking that quickfire slaps at the ball, closed fist tackles or putting the non tackle hand on the jersey is likely to pay a very heavy penalty. If we want to win we have to get serious about our tackling. I also think it’s very dangerous to concede territory. Given Beggan’s kicking range the less of the game played there the better. Conceding their kick outs or retreating back and not engaging Monaghan until they reach our blanket defence would be suicidal.

Match ups also key. Tempted to agree about Morgan on McManus but he might be needed elsewhere. Kieran Hughes is very interesting. Who do match up him with? He has ball winning height, speed out of the blocks and the engine to keep on running. Not sure we have a player to match him in all 3? Which of the 3 do you compromise on? Morgan might be the man to come out the field

Yeah Forker or McKay on Hughes, Morgan on McManus with Donaghy floating in front of him. Burns on McCarthy. Have to reduce our free count or the game will be over with 20 to go. We have to run at them and be confident - Monaghan, like Cavan, are very beatable!

IF Morgan can play like he did yesterday then he should start on McManus. He was disciplined, didn't dive in, didn't make any rash challenges and turned over a number of balls. He tackles, like many players do now, by having the arms out wide and trying to get the chest on the player, stopping them and allowing more people to come in and help with the turnover. This can be very effective, but also if done with too much aggression and you nearly end up falling on the player, it's a free all day long. When he plays like he did yesterday, he's top class. It's almost like he takes it as a personal insult when a player gets out in front of him and wins the ball and he has to get back at them by bringing them down. Top forwards will get out in front of defenders, that's what happens. But it's what you do next that is crucial. Too often with Morgan he'll charge through the back of the player, which is so frustrating to watch. If you are tackling within the accepted norms and a free is given, it's easier to accept as fans. After the roasting that Burns got yesterday, I don't know if I'd have him starting on McManus. The way that Morgan marked Daniel Flynn a few year back in Croke Park is what we need.

I heard last night that Donaghy got a 1 month ban as opposed to a 1 game ban and will miss this game also (apparently one month bans are still a thing?) Anyone confirm this?

There would be a flip side to this as with most things, some would say its better to let Monaghan have the ball on their own 21 100 yards away from our goals as opposed to them winning one of Beggans booming 70 yard drives were they are only 60 yards from our goal.....

I was about to post when I noticed Joe's reply:

It was widely reported on BBC, RTE, UTV etc and on The official GAA Twitter that it was a one game ban which is the minimum that can be imposed. The old month etc was dropped because counties like Kerry could wait 5 weeks between some games (although not so much now with the tightening of the championship calendar).

PS @JoeH stop posting factual quotes! It stops all the rumours and scaremongering :D (I really wanted to end with "so it does", but I've bloody found myself saying it to the wife and she's gonna clout me!)

Talking to a few Down GAA people today and they are fairly sceptical about Burns' injury.

"Last week's concussion is not connected, then it was suggested he was dehydrated, now there was a headache early on in the game."

Such is the cynical world in which we live!
