Ulster Championship 2023

Absolutely gutted with the result and the way we lost. We cannot close out games and haven’t been for a number of years, and is honestly the most energy sapping part of being an Armagh supporter.

Fortunately we have 2 weeks to put the game behind us. Think the group we are in is perfect to brush the final cobwebs away. Would expect some changes to particularly the forward line for next day out against Westmeath.

On a side note, those Derry ones are hard to listen to.

Like everyone on here, I'm absolutely gutted by the result today. I really thought we were finally going to win one, when the game really was on the line. Unfortunately this team just doesn't have it. I have 100% confidence in them giving it their all, being totally committed, producing great attacking moments and making a real show. I don't have any confidence in them seeing a game out, when they have it their hands, like we did today. I'm immensely proud of the effort put in by the team and we showed that we were more than a match for Derry. There were key moments in the game that we didn't manage well enough. Our shooting was off. Ethan's mistake for the goal. The kick out in extra time that was just pumped to Conor Glass, which they scored off and then Rian O'Neill needlessly giving some to a Derry player and getting a free on half way moved up to the 45, which McGuigan scored from. All incredibly frustrating as Derry were there for the taking and a win today would have been massive for this team, but we couldn't get it done. The round robin is going to be tough going, but we have what it takes to win those games.

Need a new TV and

We play Galway, Tyrone and Westmeath. We play Galway and Tyrone away. I wish today was it, it's getting exhausting having the same problems. There are problems but the lines are becoming blurry as to where the exist.

Derry have surpassed us in only a few years.
Galway is at a neutral venue
The home game against Westmeath is massive

How will tickets work for the home and away games? Does the nominated home team get a larger percentage or are we thinking it will go general sale. Id imagine a packed athletic grounds and a packed healy park. Croker as part of a double header for the galway game??

Honestly though, absolutely fuck penalties. Stop importing the worst aspects of English Football.

As a massive English football fan, the last thing I want to see as a new fan of the GAA is the shit that everyone hates from English football.
And to think the penalty kick was invented in Armagh

I'm trying to be optimistic and think losing Ulster could be a blessing in disguise and we make the AI final...and lose that too.

I want to look at the bigger picture here for a minute. Yes, we’re gutted tonight, but bear with me...

I can’t help feeling days like today are drawing to a close. The match as a spectacle was disappointing. Only really coming to life in the latter stages. But here we are, a full house in Clones. Yes, it’s not ideal, with it’s traffic jams, poor roads etc, but you have to admit Ulster finals are a special occasion.

Watched highlights of Leinster tonight. Frig sake, what a waste of time. Bankrolling Dublin has absolutely killed that championship. Played in front of a less than half full Croke Park. A 21 point win. Without Dublin, you have 5 or 6 teams around the same level.

Munster not much better. Another 74 point victory for Kerry. Connacht was lopsided this year, with Sligo reaching the final. At least other years, you have three contenders.

But this new championship format will, I’m sure, eventually kill off the provincials. We in Ulster will probably lose our competitive championship because the other three aren’t up to scratch. And once it goes, it won’t come back.

We were a kick of a ball from being the fifth different winner in 5 years, and the sixth different winner in 9 years. No other provincial gives you that. No other even comes close. Such a shame.

There's no excitement in Gaelic football anymore to me it's dead

What a kick in the nuts ! That loss is up there with Kerry being in 2000 and Tyrone in 2005 . Hard luck but had we been more clinical we could of won it , Good effort but those little inches in tight games seems to always elude us ,the most annoying thing in extra time when we scored we allowed Derry up to the half way line without getting hands on them and they scored immediately. Bad goal as well to concede Ethan had a lot of positives today , two great scores , but coming for a high ball and then been caught in no man’s land shows the risk of an outfielder in goals. Plus our forwards apart from Rian and Stefan didn’t score . We just need a break to win one of these big games that are tight , hopefully our day will come . Well done Derry , the one penalty that wasn’t perfect Ethan saved , so they took there chance , we might do it all again later in the year .

oneill getting that ball moved up 10 yards at the end lost that game, don't think mcguigan points that from 60 yards but from 50 and a few stolen yards he swings it over. Small detail but it's the fine margins and needs highlighted, basic indiscipline. Great effort all round, managements biggest 2 weeks lie ahead imo, getting the lads lifted again will be vital but if anyone can it's Geezer

What a dreadful way to lose a title. That was so hard to take I’m just gutted.
Tactically I felt we did ok, it was slow and methodical but I don’t think there was much choice on that. We could have been much braver and Soupy really carried it to them and frightened them.
We had so many ways to win that;
1 A lot of wides that were so scorable - Turbitt and Duffy
2 Howler of a goal
3 Grugan dropping that short
4 Ciaran Mackin having to go off
5 Jarly Óg not going for the throat
6 No effort at early long ball
7 retake of the kick out
8 Poor kick out strategy with the game won
9 McFaul being available to play

There are probably more but that was there for the taking. Thought we gave it an almighty effort so I’m not going to blame anyone. I was worried they could be out of sight after 20 mins but felt if we stayed with them then we‘d have a great chance… and we did. That Derry team have been roundly lauded this year and we matched them well.
Westmeath aren’t beaten yet and its some chance for them to have a cut. We will gain a lot from the AI series and might well see Derry down the line. I wouldn’t fear them. Would love it so much if we could just get over the line in these tight games
And Rian charging into the back of Mcguigan to get a soft free moved forward then they were able to push up on our kick outs. Basically got three scores from that one free.

I'm convinced now more than ever that Mcgeeney as a manger has no luck what's so ever, when you consider some of the games in his time in Kildare as well

Aw lads. Gutted isn’t the word.

Think we’re a better team that Derry to be honest. Soft goal and our own wides beat us, they definitely are no super team. Should have pushed up on their kickouts more, their keeper bar saving penalties is absolutely useless.
