Ulster Championship 2023

Bit off topic, but Clones isn't fit for purpose. Toilets situation is dreadful and the town itself is a nightmare for traffic.

It has always been this way - but really unacceptable for 2023. The GAA needs to consider giving money to Monaghan to redevelop the place.

Personally, I think the Ulster final should be moved to Croke Park until Casement is redeveloped.
They should move it to Windsor Park

I think the roads are a problem with Clones too.

Big match venues also needs public transport. Bus and train options needs looking at going ahead.

Poyntzpass ideal. Village straddling both counties, and some of us could have took the train. I joke of course, but seriously, train/bus options need looking at. Especially if you’re looking at a redeveloped Casement. Andytown is a nightmare for parking and traffic.

Enjoyable. I'll take playing poor enough and win. If the comments were we played out of our skin making no mistakes, we'd be worried going to the final. ANY day beating Down in any game is a good day!!

Come on lads. It's almost 10.30pm on the evening of a match day. Ok then I'll start it. Time Geezer was gone. Let someone who knows what they're at take charge for the final and we'll only lose it by 20 points!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus Down are woeful. Their only tactic was to take contact and lie down. (See what I did there?;))

That was as handy a win as we will get all year, we weren’t wonderful but the goals meant we didnt have to get out of 2nd gear for a lot of the game. Not going to start naming lads but a solid performance without being spectacular, you go the feeling that if we needed to win by 20 points we would have. Absolutely brilliant to see such a crowd in Clones, noise was unreal. Amazing to be back in a final, been far far too long. Hopefully make it the norm again!

On a negative note, can whoever is throwing those flares kindly fuck off. There was one aimed at a steward at one stage yesterday, it was a red one so presumably a Down supporter. Either way, totally unacceptable, those lads are giving up their time for all our benefit.

A strange game of football. I knew Down were poor but still managed to be severely unimpressed by just how poor.

The draw has been very, very kind to us. But it often has been for others. All we can do is make the most of the opportunity when it presents itself. Thus far mission accomplished.

The 3 championship victories will have done little to help us prepare for Derry or a final. But 3 years in Division 1 will have.

Whilst there is a top 10 teams there looks like once again there is a smaller elite breaking away at the top end of that. Derry and Armagh are in the next group. They are in and around our level. Victory will be harder won but these are the victories that truly count.

On yesterday, when we were cruising, a few players were getting involved in pointless niggle. Some of those players have even been described as being smart or disciplined.

This is where the serious stuff starts and needless cards of any colour must be avoided. Playing a man down against Derry would be a very big problem, and any player on a yellow will be targeted by means of varying degrees of legitimacy.

Great win, great to be back in a final but overall it’s hard to analyse that game. Down very one dimensional with their only real tactic was to soak up pressure and try to score on the break through play or engineered frees. They are a horrible team to watch and being down you couldn’t bate them by enough!

From our own perspective Ethan did rightly in goals but I still worry about the kickouts. If we go long against Derry we will struggle. They are very strong in the middle sector. Forker has been a real leader this year. I would have him on McGuigan and play McGuigan going backwards. The further he is away from our goals the better. McCabe was strong and I thought Conor O Neill was quietly effective.

In MF we did ok but a lot of that was relying on Murnin coming out. Hopefully his injury and Ben Crealys are not serious (presume Crealy was injured to be taken off like that just before HT).

At the start I thought Hall was poor but he really grew into the game and worked very hard. I also thought Grugan got on the ball and did an awful lot of simple stuff very well. He is a very clever player. Duffy worked his socks off and has grown really well into his role. His movement for his point from Rians pass was excellent. Murnin was excellent and rightly got MOTM. Ironically on the day we hit our highest score in a long time our 2 main scorers were very quiet! Turbo just couldn’t find his feet (metaphorically and physically!). He kept at it but just wasn’t his day yesterday. Rian was tortured by the no 6 the whole game and he kept his cool very well. He managed himself very well as they were clearly set on trying to get a reaction from him. He played himself through 70 minutes after an injury and you could see he wasn’t sharp but the goal was nearly like a valve being released. Hopefully that helps him kick on for the final.

The subs were excellent too. The added something to the game and refreshed it whereas the Down subs were just giving lads game time.

The usual caveat. Yesterdays performance will not beat Derry. Derry play like Down on steroids. Defensively they are verbally very strong although they are suspect in FB line. If we had another strong ball winner in MF it would be delicious to see Rian and Andy as twin peaks in front of the Derry goals with Turbo feeding off them. I think if we take the game to them they are liable to leak goals but they can also score heavily.

An interesting side story will be the battle of the fly goalies. Who will be the top scorer between the 2 of them?

Finally, well done to the management. They have the team going the right way, not fully there yet but definitely going the right way. There is an Ulster title to win so let’s go for it. Trophies are all the count at the end of the day. No point in making it and not winning it!!!

And just to mention kickouts. Haven’t watched the match yet but looks like we were willing to risk losing possession to drill it longer rather than just take the short sideways kick that Down were offering. Shows were are learning.

Strange game yesterday. We won by 10 points but I thought we weren't really playing that well. Probably that is mostly down to how poor Down were and we didn't need to be anywhere near top of out game to win the game.

Looking forward to the final and Derry are favourites going into it (according to the bookies). But don't think they are as good as team as some people would make you think.

They won ulster last year but had a very handy draw. And the final against Donegal could have easily went the other way. Once they came up against a structured team with a developed game plan in Galway then they were found out.

Also this year against Dublin in the league final it shows they can be got when put under pressure.

Few things need worked on before the final, with our kickouts whenever we have no short option being the biggest concern. This could cause us major problems if Derry decide to push up on our kick outs.

But we are in the final and great to be a competing in one again after a long and overdue absence.

Sarcasm?

I agree, I think down had much more bite in them early on and could well have had a few more scores. Both teams seemed to be intent on passing to the opposition goalkeeper the difference being that Rafferty is much better in the air. We kind of relied on the goals which were speculative efforts for points (1&3) so there’s not much design in that even if they were well taken. In the second half down had no bite or ambition and appeared more concerned with keeping the bad look off things. Lane bailed them out in that regard with some very soft frees.

On the Derry Galway game I felt Derry didn’t get anything like fair play when the game was in the melting pot before Galway jogged home. I do agree they can be got at and we should have confidence in that. I think if we run Glass hard then he fades in the latter part of games. I’m concerned with how we win the midfield and expect them to put serious pressure on our kick outs. If we have a good cut at them then I think we’re well capable of doing damage in the third quarter.
I think they have looked more impressive this year between league and championship so far. We’ve been good in bursts but not entire games so it might be about 55/45 in their favour at the moment but I think we have plenty to improve on.

Agree we have also had an easy run to the final. Similar to Derry last year and accept that is luck of the draw at times.

The difference being our easy run has been constantly mentioned. After Antrim, Cavan and Down matches I have read how Armagh need to up their game. Won't be good enough next time. Etc.

Did Derry not beat Tyrone and Monaghan last year? Then a Donegal side that beat us out the gate in Ulster as well?
