A middle Division 2 team that got 11 league points. That is a good Derry team who are well Managed
That Derry team could have been promoted to Div 1, but fell victim to the worst refereeing decision of the year so far in their game against Roscommon. Having said that, it all went belly up for them against Galway. It will be interesting to see how they do against Monaghan.

Round 1 of qualifiers will have:
Mayo
Armagh
Tyrone
Clare
Louth
Derry or Monaghan
Cork or Kerry
Dublin or Meath

It is also possible that Donegal, Galway, Limerick and Kildare could join the above, unlikely but possible. In the event there are more than 8 teams there will be a preliminary round.
You would imagine cork or meath. Hard to call between Monaghan and Derry

Derry ran Donegal right to the wire last year in Ulster and have improved since, don’t be fooled by their league standing, as we all know counts for nothing come championship day.

Seriously.
That hand spitting hateful boll#x
Tyrone were very heavy legged
Dirty animal - must be selling cattle in the mart . After the first goal he threw water on his hand and onto his head . There's wiser out eating grass . However some turnaround in that Derry Team, Tyrone were terrible , lads just lost the head as well kicking the air and throwing the ball at someone but Derry were on it from the first minute .

Aye, McKenna had to go after throwing the ball at the Derry man.

If he didn’t see red, somewhere in County Down, Gregory McCartan would have stuck his boot through his telly.

That’s a solid Derry team. Gallagher has been planning for months for that game. As soon as the draw was made they had it in their mind what the focus was going to be, who the match ups were going to be, how they were going to play. Tyrone were legging and off pace, as they were against Fermanagh, difference being Derry are really fit and as soon as they got a buffer they were always going to be able to soak up the pressure and attack at pace, particularly with an extra man. Gallagher is a smart operator and knows how to set up his teams. He has evolved a fair bit and his teams are more attacking now but he is still very much in the ‘Jim McGuinness’ mindset of management. He was helped significantly by an underperforming Tyrone and having an extra man but they are still a good team. Put it into context they are the only team ever to gain 11 points in Div 2 and not get promoted. They are a Div 1 team in all bar position.

In saying that like all Derry teams there’s a risk they lose the run of themselves. They will be looking to winning Ulster already instead of beating Monaghan. Banty has been here before and will be rubbing his hands. He can set a team up just as negatively as Gallagher can and have the ability to transition at pace with defenders who can score. If Monaghan keep it tight, and have no sendings off (not looking at either of the Hughes brothers in particular!), then I think they will win a tight affair by a point or 2. Monaghan the masters of dogged wins.

Believe me, Greg McCartan crossed my mind as well. I would still be prepared to argue that his red card actually cost us a second All Ireland - I kid you not!
Yep, I’ve often thought that myself. Although Gerry Kinneavy had a part in it as well, as he gave Tyrone so many soft frees that day to get them level.

Had Tyrone lost that Ulster final, they’d have gone a different route, and as far as I recall, we would have met them in an AI semi, and not the final.

Another thing that baffles me too, is how McGuigan wasn’t sent off for tripping McCartan. Then again, Kinneavy was ref, and he was an absolute joke. And not just that day.

Tyrone would have been playing less than two weeks after that match in a qualifier, if they had lost, as they should have. Down ended up with Donegal and were well beaten. Tyrone would have been going into that game totally demoralised and very vulnerable.

They went into dive overdrive that day when faced with prospect of defeat
Sean Cavanagh gave one of his very best re-enactments of the Stations of the Cross.
I was also convinced afterwards (and still am) that Peter Canavan suffered from a form of myotonia, a rare condition that causes rapid muscle relaxation and fainting. For most sufferers, these episodes are brought on by stress, but for Peter they manifest anytime he finds himself in a penalty area or within the range of a kickable free

they should also have been beaten by Derry in first round that year. Another great escape act. Derry heads were not right for the replay

That’s right. I believe there was a bereavement before the replay that affected a lot of the Derry squad.

Bringing back memories of Gerry Kineavey refereeing displays is not going to improve my mood on football.
Had to be the worst ever. Never spoke to a player

Off topic a bit but there seems to be a real mess over in Down. What an interview from E Brannigan! Can you imagine how raging we would be if that was our county champs!
Seems to be bad blood between Brannigans and the county team/ board going from the interview
