Good finish from Cavan
Had to admire (reluctantly) the quality of Down's first half performance. Pace and skill in the Down tradition. Midfield collapsed in second half. Shows the value of having a keeper able to vary the kickouts. The Down keeper hadn't got that in his locker.

Look I agree with OneofTwo I have been a club coach for the past 10 years in my own club. Last year we had a player on U14 dev squad (which he got there based on the fact that he played school football) I actually spoke to the coordinator about this and he said that coaches had contacted schools and asked for names. After a meeting one evening one ex county player stood up and said what about clubs —-can they not send kids so it was decided that they could

I send 4 a I thought IMO that they had better work ethic and chance of learning more than the kid who was picked from my club by the school

So we sent them ——they went to one training session at callanbridge and a blitz at garvaghey where they played for all of 5 minutes across 3 games next week the club gets a message to say tell lads not to come back as they no longer wanted.

When I contact development officer DH I was told to suck it up that he knows better, he might know much more than me and probably does but then that probably explains all of the success we have had at underage

As others have said we need to get the structure right from U14 upwards and once we have that in place then we can look to have success at senior level

Just on the point about whether or not Donaghy was fit. I posted it as I heard it from a source who would know but I accept that my information could be classed as second hand.

Gar confirming Donaghy’s fitness would not be classed as second hand, or even opinion for that matter. If he says it then you can take that as fact.

Guys if anyone here is seriously suggesting that Brendy Donaghy would have made a difference yesterday, yous need to get your heads examined.

Brendy Donaghy in his prime wouldn’t have saved us yesterday. That’s a team a few levels up from us across the board. Tactically, technically and physically. If they didn’t do us with skill, their system would have won it for them and if that failed they were big enough to just bully us.

For me we are just under par for the year. Great to get to division 1, just a slight pity we didn’t go it more convincingly and great to beat Derry, just a pity we couldn’t show up yesterday.

We’ve the talent to bloody a few noses in div 1 but we’ll need to be a bit cuter. I think that those on here calling for a shake up in terms of the coaching staff are correct.

Agreed. But Donaghy is our best defender bar Forker. Wouldn’t have won us the game or anything but definitely would have been a help!

NOT surprised 1 bit by this - clubs know players much better than schools or these county coaches

Gar is 100% correct, as I said the day after the Derry game on here, Donaghy was fit and ready to come on v Roscommon and start each of the 3 games from then onwards.

It is almost certain he is retiring and for him not to be given a few minutes when the game was clearly gone was poor form in my opinion, regardless of whether we could have made a greater impact by starting/coming on sooner. He has been nothing but loyal to Armagh for 14 years. A very sour ending.
