With all due respect Armaghniac that is absolute nonsense.

Laois were a serious team. Clancy and Munnelly (both superb), then Byron, Higgins and Tom Kelly all won All-Stars in 2003. They won the minor All-Ireland in 1997 (also in 2003).

The 1997 victory was over Tyrone. A Tyrone team that included McAnallen, Hughes, Stephen O'Neill and Brian McGuigan.

The Eamonn O'Hara Sligo team were a serious team. Should have stopped us in '02 truth having already beat Tyrone - as Not too serious has stated.

You cannot compare the two. It's like comparing the current Down team in a Tailteann Cup to the Greg Blaney, James McCartan and Micky Linden Down teams.

Nonsensical.

My post seems to have created aggravation that I did not intend. I'm all too aware that Sligo should have stopped us, they really performed well that year. The fact remains though that these were not favourites for the AI in those years and we struggled against teams that we were expected to beat. Perhaps the favourites tag does not suit us?

Good initiative. I’m going as the friend of a Nigerian Prince.

Never met the lad but seems nice.

Not sure if all tickets are on sale yet. I know there’s sections held for season tickets at the moment

He's a mighty lad. Sent me a message offering me the opportunity to make loads of money if I helped him out with some bank stuff as things don't seem to be going too well back home. Hope he enjoys the game and ask him if he got my account details ok in my last email

Looking forward to Saturday. If we play to our potential we should beat Monaghan, but I still have nightmare's about that 1st half against then in Newry. Should be a good crowd going, gr8 opportunity to reach an AISF. What way is TK? is he anyway near fit?

Monaghan are a well seasoned team who have been hitting some high scores this year.
They've beaten Donegal, Roscommon, Mayo in the league
Tyrone in Ulster championship
Drew with Derry, beat Clare in group stage
Beat Kildare in the prelim QF

For years they've been favourites to be relegated - still there
In this year's AI minor final and they'd a good U20 team a few years back

Monaghan never give up and keep playing right to the end - winning point last week right at the end

Nothing to lose and all to gain.

The advantage we will have is preparation - a week to recover from the Galway game and a week to prepare for Monaghan.
It's tough on players and Monaghan have a few older players.
Both teams possess a forward who can on their day obliterate the opposition. I think we have more scoring power and stronger bench. Hopefully that gets us over the line.

There seems to be an emerging idea that, if we get over the line on Saturday, it will be because of our better forward line.

I'm not so sure that stands up to scrutiny, on this year's form anyway. Monaghan have been scoring well throughout 2023, often more heavily than us. They have a very decent spread of scorers too, not really relying on someone like McManus/ McCarron to shoot the lights out.

Where I think we actually trump them is in defence. We've been very, very solid all year - it may be poor to watch at times but it's also why we're competitive to the end in every game we play.

By contrast, Monaghan have been very loose at the back. They had the worst defence in Division One this year; they had the joint worst defensive record of any side that made it through to the final 12; and, between them, Tyrone and Derry put 2-39 on them across two Ulster championship games (those same two sides only managed 1-28 against Armagh - even with extra time and extra men).

I'm not sure what that all says about how Saturday will go, but if I were in the Armagh management team I might be pushing the idea that we should play to our apparent strengths on this one.

I haven't posted in a long time but continually read through comments. I must say I was becoming disillusioned with our performances, results and style of play from early on in the league this year. We should not have been relegation contenders. Roscommon, kerry and galway were there for the taking but we didn't push on. I could see rian's red card coming from early on in the league and was / am frustrated management or rian couldn't sort this out. Embarrassed we appealed his red card.

However, it's amazing what the galway victory has done for us. The wee bit of luck we got that was long overdue. Monaghan will be difficult but we must make the most of the opportunity. I'd expect the only change from the galway game to be rian in for comisky (who will be unlucky to miss out).

It will be interesting to see who picks up o'connell and mccathy as both have been very effective coming from deep.

I'd fully expect monaghan to push up on armagh's kickouts given the joy they've had doing this in the past.

I was delighted to see higgins get a start against galway. A serious footballer. Hopefully Morgan and Kelly are avaliable from the bench which would give us serious options:

Defenders - Morgan, mccambride, comisky, mcelroy, connaire mackin
Midfielders - kelly, mcpartlan, burns
Forwards - mcquillan, conaty, kieran, mcconville, nugent, Hall

That's not to mention oisin o'neill and ciaran o'hanlon.

Can't wait for Saturday and expecting a win! I'd love to see Geezer get a win as he is under pressure to do so. Rian is due a massive game and expect him to light up croke park

Need to play Rian further out and let dictate the game and shine. Our full forward line can cause the damage if balls goes into them, Lurgan always produce classy forward and those 3 above in 13,14,15 would frighten any full back line in ireland
