Gutted after yesterday, as has been the case many times recently.

Hard to know where we go from here. An ageing squad who have been to the well many times but have been unable to win when it really matters. I’m worried for the future should some of our key men decide to call it a day. I hope they’ll stay on as Monaghan area fine example of how important your older players are in important games.

A management team who have gotten every last ounce out of a great bunch of players in terms of commitment and effort but won’t cut them loose to play their best brand of football.

So frustrating, so gutting but here, at least we’ll get to see the best players in the county playing with their clubs over the coming months!

I’m trying my best to allow the dust to settle and come back with a measured reaction to the game and the season as a whole.

It’s fair to say that countless times yesterday players took the wrong option, made mistakes, poor wides, needless fouls… that’s football you can’t eradicate that and I am frustrated with plenty of it. Monaghan had bad wides etc etc as well. A lot on here seem to be so apologetic when criticising the management but if it’s your opinion own it and just say it. Yesterday alone the tactics played right into Monaghan’s hands. Taking away our top scorer for a defender was an invitation. We were going out to not lose as has been the case all year and barring division 3 teams it hasn’t worked and we’ve been repeatedly pipped to the post. Those tactics are ok if youre performing on par and winning where you should/could but we didn’t do that this year and consistently have been overturned. The Way the cookie crumbles just isn’t enough of an explanation At this stage. For 9 years we’ve lived in the nearly zone or worse. Record in Ulster hasn’t been up to scratch and this year we had a free run there and met a Derry team in utter turmoil. Fair enough they’re a good outfit but again we didn’t go for the throat and try to win it. The Galway win we were very reactionary until the second half and then produced our best of the year and squeezed past.

I’ve not read many comments on here saying that the tactics have been solid all year or on the biggest day of the season. What a way to fall out of the championship. I talk to lots of friends from other counties and they can’t get over why we’re persisting with the current management. We all support them, we owe them that during the season but it’s over now and I think we need to get real. It’s not at all personal but they’ve had their go and then some and while there have been some successes the way were sitting now were only going to drop further. If you were looking on and this was Donegal or Mayo you’d be telling your mate from there why on earth are you still sticking with the same man. Those who insist that we should have less lofty ambitions grind on me. We should be allowed to expect progression and for the team to be playing as well as they can and to their strengths. I’m not saying I could do better, I couldn’t but I feel someone else can and in the most respectful way this is as far as we can be taken as is.

Good points made about schools and underage and for that I also feel the county board leave an awful lot to be desired. Perhaps I should have waited a bit longer but this is my opinion right now after sleeping (a bit) on it and reading your thoughts.

I never have a drink at a match but not going on here to lambast those who do.

What people do when drunk, when it spills over into violence is a different matter.

There should be a simple rule for anyone engaged in violence inside a GAA stadia: life time ban from all GAA grounds. Make it that simple. Have a fight= get banned. Your dear old mum dies and the tea and sarnies are in the local club hall then we bring you tea and sandwiches out to the gate but you don’t get to cross the threshold. Keep it nice and simple.
Agreed. The game yesterday left me deflated, demoralised, depressed. But this shit left me angry.

Of course, it is a largely a societal issue, with substance abuse, individualism and main character syndrome on the rise everywhere. I'll have my fun and fuck the consequences for anyone else.

There are also limits to what can be done when tickets go on general sale. Any gobshite with an orange top and a lift to Dublin can show up and show us up.

But none of that excuses a complete abdication of responsibility on our behalf. Many of the young people involved in that crap yesterday, and on many other occasions in recent years, are member of our clubs. Is anything happening a local level to address this growing problem? Have any of our clubs called out young people on their behaviour at games? Have any of our clubs handed out suspensions? If you've seen a young lad from your own club getting out of hand, have you gone up and tried to have a word?

The GAA is the best thing Ireland has ever produced. It's a genuine grass roots network that does absolute wonders for social cohesion, for personal development, and for the physical and mental health of local communities. But it needs to be protected from destructive influences - and we all have to step up and play our part.

Dust has settled a little after yesterday. Doesn't make the result any better but a few points to make on reflection;

A lot of comments on the management team and their input and influence on the style of play. You can't go out all guns blazing against a team playing 15 behind the ball and expect that we should shoot the lights out, regardless of how much talent we have. It's an extremely niave narrative where you'd be devoured on the break. But people think that because we had a shootout with Galway last year, where again we just about nicked a draw bare in mind, that's how it should always be. There were times we played on the front foot yesterday with a good attacking mindset and it was ultimately handling, misplaced passing and easy turnovers that caused the downfall in front of goal. That's most certainly not down to management and coaches.

I understand people want freshness and I'm not entirely sure as a supporter what I think is best at the minute, but I do know that if the current sideline go, there'll be a few who'll likely call it a day and then you're tasked with a new manager and a rebuild. And based on the likes of Cork, Down, Derry etc that's no easy and quick transition. And that's where I think, given how close we've come to progressing to at least and AI SF two years in a row, I'd be inclined to have one more year with the same squad and players.

I thought some lads really stood up yesterday. Aidan Forker just didn't stop. Relentless, passionate and honest. Grugan for all his endeavour and effort looked a little bit leggy. That mark in the 2nd half he would have had a go two or three years ago. We're at a bit of an impasse in the middle. Crealey's inconsistency is an issue. So good some days and so ineffective other days. Duffy has looked gassed the last few days out similar to how Aidan Nugent did in the few games he played. Soupy is an impact player in my opinion at this stage. Still offers plenty but would rather see him come in off the bench and lift the thing when we're flat.

I think our weakest line has been out half back line. CO'N has regressed as the year has gone on after promising so much. A few handy turnovers and frees given away proved costly. Jarly Óg is so frustrating. I watch the man play club football week in week out outside of intercounty ball and dominate the middle of the park. When he puts on an orange journey it's as if he feels shackled and afraid to make a mistake. His ability to cut through the middle and draw fouls and get scores at club level is what puts him head and shoulders above but with Armagh it's down the wing and recycle with no attempt to take men on.

The Ethan project is no longer giving us any distinct advantage as other teams are attempting the same and have copped on to it. Had we an out and out GK in yesterday the penalties may have been a different story. Aaron McKay struggled yesterday but I think he's had a solid year and made himself an invaluable man in the full back line. Paddy Burns really stood up the last two games after a wicked injury. For a man who doesn't get a lot of praise at the best of times he made a great fist of it on Shane Walsh and again on McCarron yesterday. Probably our best man marker now.

I think Hall, Oisín Ó Néill, Higgins and a few others will offer a lot more next year and with O'Neill and O'Hanlon it's like getting two new players. The former maybe solving our midfield conundrum. Maybe a Jarly/Oisín midfield.

And to make it worse, after watching that Derry performance it just shows you how close we are. Anyway, we go again. I'll see ye all in The Box It Athletic Grounds in the depths of January. Ard Mhacha Abú.

I think that's very unfair regarding yesterday

Superb penalties taken and the longer it went on it was always going to be one unfortunate miss that would end it.
Monaghan manager, maybe tongue in cheek, said they didn't practice at all

I think a better solution is hitting frees from the top of the 'D'.
Yeah, that's all true.
It's just so sickening to lose on penalties again. I hate the introduction of penalties into the GAA and the new structure of the championship.

Ethan - decent first half. Very rocky 15 minutes with kickouts in the 2nd half. Did okay in the pens. Not the worst of days.

McKay & Paddy Burns both poor. Burns to a greater degree.

Forker excellent. A top top player running out of years. Would start for any team in Ireland.

Greg McCabe and Jarly Og both average at best.

Conor O'Neill - unfortunately his worst performance of the season. Better days ahead hopefully.

Crealey poor Greg Mackin decent.

McElroy done the job he was asked to I suppose but offered nothing on the ball.

Grugan - Awful. That chance to put two between the teams (never happened during the whole game) in ET was a horrendous miss. Gave away the free for McManus to salvage a draw in ET. Can't tackle. During the game had two goal chances. McGeeney can't be held solely responsible. As a senior player Grugan unfortunately was very costly.

Soupy- also guilty of missing a good goal chance. Hit a very soft wide. Tracking back he's brutal. Faster on the ball than tracking back.

Duffy - decent. Left it all out in the pitch. Beautifully wrongfooted one of the Monaghan backs and slipped the ball outside to Murnin for a tap over in the best move of the game. Move started after a great field by Mackin.

Rian - Yet again carried us on the scoreboard. I didn't realise how good he was for us until I watched it back. His shooting is second to nobody in the country. We all thought he'd won the game with that absolutely sensational score. Hit a few clutch frees and a '45. Set up 0-03 on top of his own tally of 0-06. Won 2 turnovers also.

Murnin - in and out but Armagh's player of the year. Should have been left up top by the line. Won some crucial ball around the middle but undoubtedly should have been left up with the non-starting Turbitt from the start.

We will just have to wait and see what happens with management. Yesterday the minute McElroy was named instead of Turbo you knew what to expect.

Watched it back twice. Isn't easy.

Looks like you and I watched two very different games in that case ;)

Fair play. This is the positivity I would like to feel even if we disagree on a handful of points. I think if several players would call it a day then that’s still not a compelling reason to hang onto a management that just isn’t delivering. It’s been punctuated this season by relegation (2 games in the league we won were very unconvincing too) and failure to see out game after game.
Halfback line for me yesterday had a shocker even if positions mean very little once the ball is in. I thought all three underperformed. Jarly showed well and carried it ok but didn’t light it up. CON has had an awful time of it since Ulster Final.
Ethan looked like he didn’t know whether to stick or twist yesterday and I feel he could have been much more influential. Wrong option too often.

We still have a very promising panel who can put it up to anyone. After decent excitement in the last 2 years this year has had drama but an awful air of fear throughout. Whatever comes I’ll give my support next year. I worry about what happens in 3-5 years as we are.
