That was a fairly understrength Mayo team and we should have won, being 3 points up near the end. So we could/should have won. Similarly we could have beaten Monaghan even though we did not deserve to win that one. Very easily, we could have had 8 points by now.
5 points might already be enough to keep us up, but need to beat Kildare to be sure.
That is just not true.

12 of their starting 15 from the 2021 final were on the field by half time today. One of the lads not involved was Bryan Walsh, who isn't a first choice option. Flynn and Orme came off the bench against Tyrone last year and were also heavily involved today.

They were every bit as close to full strength as ourselves.

Yes, but until we secure that point somewhere we are in a relegation battle. Kildare will be a massive test - they are in peak condition at present - don't take that result for granted.
We are not in a relegation battle
Dublin, Monaghan, Kildare and Tyrone are.

Let's be real here. We should have beaten Mayo today the chances were there and individual mistakes contributed to the loss.

I think it's dawning on some people that we are a serious team and are now capable of competing and belonging with the top teams.
That may disappoint some people who have other motives but as an Armagh supporter I'm exceptionally proud of the team. Yes silly mistakes are being punished - that's what happens at the top table.
Mayo are an exceptional team who have been at the top for ten years.

Let's get to the athletic grounds on the 12th march and support these guys to a win which will probably mean they can play the last two games to gain a place in the league final.

Can anyone point out where posters are jumping down players throats or have other motives or are suggesting we are in disarray? This is a discussion board folks - so let's discuss and enjoy the debate rather than having a nauseating pat on the back forum where no-one can critique the game.

Usual negative shite being posted by people who love to get a dig in at McGeeney any chance they get.

Wasn’t at the game but going by radio sounded like a really good match, kickouts didnt seem to work. Sounded like Rian had another big game.

At the end of the day we were beat, not the first time, not the last time and Mayo are a really really good side filled with top players and will as usual be in the mix for an all ireland. Rian nails that free at the last and we’re coming up the road with a point happy enough.

Kildare game is huge now, Dublin are more or less gone, one more win needed for us imo.

Poor decision making at the end killed us. Difficult to understand what the thinking was with Rian on two occasions. That being said to only lose by two points to the second best team in the country and having played so poorly is encouraging. It's not long ago this was happening in division 3. It's difficult to coach players to kick the ball and be attack minded and also instill cautious play at the same time.
I'm very confident that we will pick up enough points to stay up. We are also learning serious lessons in every game we play.

This loss will do us no harm in the long run.

Just in the door.

Couple of points

Not convinced with keeper experiment. Short kickouts went on all through the game. The couple of longer kickouts did help on occasions though.

The Mayo support were hard to listen to around were I was. Booing players lying injured, booing at frees.

Aidan O'Shea must be a protected species. He committed the most blatant foul on Grugan when Mayo had pushed up and avoided a card. A couple of minutes later a puff of air got him falling to the ground to get Rian booked. ( If tv replays show that he took a massive hit I will apologise!)

The pitch was very slippery and bumby

What's your analyses of last 10 minutes being there throwball? Hard to fathom how 5 points were conceded in 8 minutes against a stiff breeze - did there seem to be a tactical shift or did we run out of steam?

Was at the match today. Considered it a great learning exercise. Defence was well structured, some of the scores and movement were very good. Some of Rians scores were ridiculously good.

Ultimately the match was lost on a few small margins - handling errors and a few mistakes.

However, great to be playing at this level and be disappointed. Hopefully will stand to the team in the summer

Going by the league Sunday highlights players marking no one & most mayo scores came from Armagh given the ball away

Home a while and don’t fancy looking at league Sunday have it taped.

Overall as I said very disappointed to be in the position we were in and lose in the end and mainly down to our own game management and a bit of panic .

If someone had sad you would lose by 2 points and give Mayo a match before I probably would have lived with that it was just the way we lost on the end was hard to take .

We were definitely the better team in the first half playing against the wind and we matched Mayo for intensity and fitness , some great scores With Rian and Grugan leading the way .

The wind was strange while it was meant to be as an advantage for us in the 2nd half it was a swirly one and it was dipping the ball down at times for both teams which meant it dropped short a lot and it was hard scoring conditions out there .

Not sure about the goalkeeping experiment but we did have some success with Rian flicking balls on and going long .

Mayo are a tough unit , O Hora and Mullen are tough players at the back with a lot of football ability , they do lack some forward power and found it tough against our system , but they don’t stop and can score from every position on the pitch , they have a massive support that are constantly encouraging them as well and considering the disappointments they had had over the years I think it should be commended . The bench has players like McLoughlin (steps again ) and the much maligned O Shea do make a difference and if they get Cillian o Connor and remain intact they won’t be far away.

As for us we need to move away from Moral victories and start winning a few tight matches and I not sure if the management can be blamed for the turnovers that lost the match but we need to learn from this defeat and not let it happen again .

Not so long ago we couldn't get out of division 3 playing Sligo and now we "should" have beaten Mayo and ran out of steam and ideas and didn't and that's still poor form.
Understand why some say those things and completely respect that opinion and in some strange ways I agree with the sentiment, but we're Armagh. We are not Kerry, Dublin or any of the super powers. We're a good team, playing at our level and mostly holding our own. It was inevitable today was coming and it stings, but like the euphoric feeling after beating Dublin and Tyrone, we need to keep a perspective and enjoy the ride. Great rollercoasters have the best drops. Just a meandering thought after a loooooong slow run home!!

Oh and I can't remember who it was, but on a least two occasions we were through on goal and a simple sidewards pass would have found a free man on open goal and with the red mist (maybe it was a deep orange tint) the player in possession didn't see it. Damn it's easy playing in the stand. Now I need time to clean these boots for the next one!

Can't watch that RTE shite anymore Billy @William Of Orange Maybe it's becoming my new Irish News.

Personally I thought they ran out of steam. Jarly struggled after he got a knock. McKay went off injured. Forker seemed to cramp up. Oisin isn't match fit. Add in a few careless errors. A few of those scores came from turnovers in attack and at least one very soft free.

It’s easier to watch when we win Jimbo any mention of the point that Mackin kicked in the first half was ruled wide looked a point I thought .

I should also add. Mayo are a good team and took the chances offered

Turbitt I think it was. Crealey was steaming towards goal. Can’t recall the other.

The goalkeeper thing, it’s good to have options. We seen last year how Morgan’s long punts upfield can be an awesome weapon, and turn defence into attack in a couple of seconds. So maybe that’s what the idea with Ethan is, as he has a strong kick on him.

One thing I’d like to see more of is players launching themselves at opposition kicks. Three points Mayo got, that had our players really went for it, they could have blocked them down a la McGeeney in his prime. He was a great blocker of the ball. It’s something we should be adding to our game more, especially when opponents are close to goal and a score is likely.

All part of the learning curve that many of this young team are experiencing and will benefit from. If we survive Division 1, as I firmly believe we will, then the League should be considered positively.
Couple of things:
1) Goalkeeping role is evolving. At least we are attempting to move with the times. And perhaps
Ethan will prove to be our Beggan, but he needs to be given a few games to grow into the role. He is physically imposing, can take ball out and through contact, and has serious length in kickout and from hand. Worth a try. But needs to be worked with and encouraged.
2) Already too much is expected from Rian. A fabulous player, but unrealistic to expect him to be faultless each week. Let him make his mistakes and accept that we are lucky to have him playing for us, and hopefully will have for a Very long time. Still so young but what serious potential.
3) Defence needs to be commended for their efforts and application. Like many I thought prior to season that the defence would be our achilles heal. Collectively, they are a much improved unit. A couple of defenders are very young, and may make mistakes. Again, like Rian, they need time
To develop, and we shouldn’t be too harsh on them. But we seem to be developing confidence at the back.
4) Attacking wise, we are still doing some good things, but optimistically we can improve. Some of our points have been fantastic and we are a real and consistent goal threat this term. We have a few very capable goal scorers in Rian, Jason Duffy, Conor Turbitt, Soupy, Rory and possibly TK.
5) Fresh (or nearly fresh) blood has been invigorating for squad. By that I mean new players and also previously non-established regulars. Nugent and TK have been massive positives that I didn’t hadn’t anticipated. The Mackins have done well. Ben Crealey looks capable. Jarly Og has been bright and seems to have nailed down a half back jersey, a position I hadn’t considered him for.
6) We now have good depth in our squad, with many squad players fighting hard for starting jerseys.

Would Love to give Ulster a rattle this year, and for the first time in many years I can say that we are very capable of winning it, with a little luck. And I think we might be due a Little luck this year!
The future is bright, the future is Orange!! Non-politically of course
