Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

Just another one if anyone noticed it, at full time ET the Cavan players (ok some of them) were air punching as if they'd won the game and we were more dejected (Rian kicking at the ground being the most obvious) which suggests our lads felt they had let themselves down.

Maybe Cavan weren't as confident with the favourites tag as we assumed and with them going back in as slight favourites that might just work in our favour as they'll be thinking it's theirs for the taking. That'd be good........I think.

The Faulkner black card tackle looked a lot more cynical than the tackle Grugan made a few minutes later. Grugan was in front of him and committed to the tackle while the Cavan player went down a bit easy.

Nugent puts himself in some decent scoring positions but he seems way too eager to take the shot.

Whenever Hall ran forward it was always in to a dead end - two Cavan players were always there to shut him down. Having said that he is given no protection - he won a ball in MF and somehow Cavan were given a free.

Grugan when he had the ball didn't look confident. There was one time he had the ball, I think it was when Hughes was penalised for taking too long. Instead of attacking he went to run, stopped and turned back.

Grimley tackle where he went in with the foot. I can see why some would think it was a red and we are lucky his foot didn't go off in any other direction than for the ball. You can't penalise a player for that and it has to be based on perceived intention otherwise all players will be throwing themselves head first into 50/50 balls.

The Cavan defence won't get it easy with O'Neill, Clarke and Murnin in the replay. However, some of the Cavan players won't be having off days again either. Too many wrong decisions on the day and watching the game I have a feeling that Armagh will be better prepared for Cavan - but it depends on how our management shakes things up.
Doesn’t have to be on intention. Wreckless and dangerous play is wreckless and dangerous play. I would doubt it very much tha Grimley intended to hurt the guy but he was both wreckless and dangerous. If he had have gotten a red he could have had no complaints

There would be a lot of red cards throughout the championship if that was strictly adhered to.

Thought Forker really good again

Impressed with Shields Nugent Jarly and Jamar rian and Paul hughes

Bad games for Soupy and Rory. And really dont know why we play Ethan rafferty (even RB doesn’t pick him!)
Hopefully we can play as well or better on Sunday. Mckiernan dudnt have shooting boots on and as someone said they didn’t put in high ball.
Would Great start to summer to be in Ulster Final
Come on Armagh

Then we have O. O'Neill, Murnin and Hall potentially coming on. Not sure about Hall as an impact sub or who he would replace in the forwards if he was to start. Grugan is lacking confidence at the moment to. The forwards are only effective when they are getting ball and while we continue to mess about with passing the ball around the back line we will suffer.

Hall offers more than Grugan at the minute.

O’Neill nullified somewhat on Sunday. I had a feeling he mightn’t get as much space after a very good debut v Down.

O'Neill will be a marked boy/man from now on,no matter how bad Grugan is playing he won't be dropped still wouldn't have Hall in the team

I am watching the game, only a few minutes in but the build up for Burns missed goal chance was sweet.

Started off with Hughes' kick going slightly over Grimley's head. Cavan were unable to hold on to possession and Hall secures it. Sees the run Shields is making and offloads it. Shields runs on and dodges three Cavan players, passes it to Forker, Shields continued his run and Forker passes it over the Cavan defence. At that point Shields had the choice of two Armagh players who had a clear run at goal, passes it to Burns but the shot went wide.

Morgan's yellow card was not even for defending - Cavan were up near their own goal and the referee is called down the pitch to give him the yellow.

McVeety pushed Morgan twice in the chest. Morgan pushed him back once in the neck area. McVeety went to the umpire complaining and the umpire drew it to the referee's attention. Should have been a yellow each for me.

McVeety was at it all day. Was it not him that dived to the floor when Shields was in his ear? And again when Grimley got a free from a kick out and he went to the ground as if he was decked.

My team for Sunday;

Hughes

Mc Kay, Charlie, Morgan

Shields (encouraged to carry ball and attack at pace as much as possible)

Forker, Kennedy, Hughes

Grimley, JOB, Crealey

Hall, Campbell (to link play and carry ball as much as possibly, the two hardest jobs on the pitch)

Jamie, Rian (both to stay inside 30m of the Cavan Goal to always have an out ball)

I believe that could still give us strength at the back and in numbers, the option to attack at pace, JOB more license to get forward with less defensive responsibilities than usual with Crealey there, a stronger midfield. It would only work however with quick transition and breaking at pace.

Time has come to drop Grugan

Nugent would be very unlucky to miss out, but with him/Murin/McElroy/O'Neill/Grugan to make an impact off the bench.

I believe on watching the game back, if Shields doesn't have to go and do a man marking job we would have won the game as he was causing a lot of problems first 20 mins.

The only change I would have to that team is Nugent instead of Soupy as I think Soupy is better off the bench when the field opens up and Nugent is a harder worker and he and Hall could do a good job playing the link play.
