Armagh v Cavan - Ulster Semi-final and Replay

My overwhelming feelings from yesterday are ones of relief and frustration. The game was there for the taking, when were a couple of points ahead, a man up and going into the last 10 minutes of normal time and as usual we found a way to balls it up. It's plainly obvious now that there is a serious issue with this team when it comes to seeing out games that we are leading in and in control of. For whatever reason, we are incapable of knowing what to do in this situation and seeing the game out. Galway at home a few years ago in the league, we were 8 points ahead and threw it away. The Tipperary game from three years ago where we strolling and then blew it and with it promotion to Division 2. Last season against Sligo we did it again. This year against Clare in Newry. Two weeks ago against Down. Now this. And those are just the ones I remember. I don't know how and if this can be solved.

By the end of extra time I was relieved to get another bite at it. Cavan have been operating at a slightly higher level than us and did cause us problems and kept most of our danger men under wraps. We had some big performances from Burns, Hall, Hughes and Forker who was excellent. Donaghy rightly got sent off and I don't know why the team are even bothering with an appeal. It's blatant what he did.

To beat Cavan next week, we have to take our chances, getting more from Clarke and O'Neill. Rian can't be missing easy frees like he did in the first half and has to release the ball quicker than he did in the second half when we had a two man overlap which he blew because he held on too long. Clarke needs to start scoring. He's winning lots of ball and has become a better team player, but he needs to be a scoring threat again. We also have to stop the Cavan runners coming through as that's where they get the majority of their scores from - lots of hand passing patterns, which allows someone to break forward unmarked, creating an overlap to score or win a free. We will also need to have Burns fit as he's become a crucial player for us.

Cavan are there for the taking. I just don't know if we have that killer instinct to take advantage, which is so frustrating, as there's so much about the team which is good.

Serious lack of footballing brains holding back the talent in this Armagh team. On both sides of the white line.

Our captain giving a cheap out by charging into the back of the Cavan defender isolated in the corner after a dodgy short kickout. Brainless.

Our midfielder pulling wildly on a loose ball and giving the ref every opportunity to even up the numbers shortly after he lined a Cavan man. Brainless.

Our most experienced player dropping the knee into a prone Cavan man at the death, potential turning over an Armagh free and giving Cavan a chance at a winner. Thuggish and brainless.

Management sending a blood and thunder defender out to mark Cavan's most elusive forward from the start, when every indication from about the last five years of said defender's career suggested he would struggle marking that sort of player. He lasted 20 minutes. Brainless.

Management gifting Cavan possession on their own kickouts by not instructing players to press up on short ones. Cavan built momentum from the back with increasing fluidity throughout the game. Even when a man up we didn't press their kickouts, just dropped yet another ineffective sweeper. Brainless.

Management leaving a quarter fit target man as our only out in the full forward line for the majority of extra time. Especially frustrating after going a point up with a few minutes left. This was the time when a speedier player was needed in the full forward line to chase and hold up long balls played into the space left by the desperate, pressing Cavan defence. Clarke would have been a better option up there at that stage. Campbell would've been a better option. Anyone would've been a better option than a lad who has about 10 minutes of football in his legs this year. This reality was a significant factor in the ridiculous effort at keep-ball in the last few minutes. Which was always doomed. Brainless.

And don't just take my word for it, here are two pieces from today alone both essentially saying that we were too dumb to win.

Anyone see what Grugan done/said to management? Heard a lot of people saying he could be in trouble with his antics. Might not be the worst thing to be sidelined for a game and do some real soul searching as he’s not been himself this year at all.

I didn’t see anything while at the game and didn’t notice on tele either

Watching the game after listening to it on the radio I thought we did ok. It was a good game but that was becuase it was 2 evenly matched teams who both tried to play the game. I personally thought the ref was fair and got most things right. First black card was wrong and Grimley was a bit lucky but bar that he let the game flow and it wasn't really a dirty game anyway.

From an Armagh point of view kickouts are killing us. There needs to be work done to sort that out. We had an extra man and could not isolate one person for a short kick out and that was a worry. The game intelligence and leadership on the field is lacking and that was the same against Down. This is something experience should bring but there was experience on the field in Shields, Donaghy and Forker so they should really have been taking control but they weren't.

Burns was excellent in open play and covering the ground but in many ways midfield was blitzed also. It was obviously Grimley's first game in a while so hopefully that will have brought him on a lot. I also think that a start for Crealy in place of Grugan might assist in the MF area and really should be considered as he has done well in both games since he has come in.

Replay is in Cavan's favour in my view. They would have been slight favourites on Sunday and generally favourites win replays. If Burns is definitely out then I reckon it will be a Cavan win with a bit to spare but it all comes down to who learns the most from the drawn game.

“We have talked about it. Management have talked about it,” Forker notes in The Irish Independent. “Kieran [McGeeney] always talks about how can we score more than other teams, not about how we contain them. I think it's the psychology of players that we just retreat a wee bit, take an extra step off them, invite them on.

Taken from an interview with Forker.

Anyone find this concerning?

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but Burns has already become our key man and his availability will be a major influence on our chances come Sunday. Regardless of this, being able to select any two of Grimley, Burns, O O'Neill and Crealy means that our midfield options are probably better than any one else in Ulster. Not been able to say that for a while!

Bit late to the party, but here's my ratings from Sunday.
Hughes - 5/6. Got blew up for taking too long. Maybe blame nobody moving? Didn't have much to do
Morgan - 6. My god, will this lad ever learn he cannot steamroll somebody from behind? liable for 3/4 scorable frees every game. Deserved to be subbed. Roasted by McVeety.
Shields - 6. Lost his going forward ability when Morgan was taken off. We need him to make those driving runs forward
Hughes - 8. Arguably our best player on Sun. Never stopped working and scored a good point. Back to his best
Kennedy - 7 - Solid again. Make good runs fwd and marked his man out of the game. Sure start for next game
Donaghy - 4. Stupid cowardly act at the end. Deserves his red. Embarrassing if Armagh appeal it. Gypsy act
Forker - 8. Marked OReilly out of it. His best game in long long time. A real leader.
JOB - 8.5. No review needed. Top class player again
Grimley - 6.5. Seemed to spend most of time chasing McKiernan around. Had opportunity to take points but recycled. Good to have 90mins under his belt after injury
Hall - 7. Gets a tough time from supportrs, asking what he actually contributes. Thought he played well. Took a good score
Grugan - 4. We not dropping him solely due to being captain? Rubbish again
Nugent - 7. A great find and prospect. Never stops working and seemingly always will chip in with a point or 2
Clarke - 5. We need to get him on the ball more. Very very quiet.
Oneill - 7. Never stopped trying to get on the ball, but had to come out very deep. Took some great scores.
Campbell - 5. Poor. again, had to keep coming deep. We need him driving fwd, like he done in ET getting fisted point.

Subs
Rafferty - 4. Took great mark, but that's it. Gave ball away and hooked shot way left. Quick sub. Doesn't look fit.
McElroy - 5. Sfored a great point when came on, but gave ball away lots. What was he thinking at end fist passing to sideline at very end? Go forward man.
Murnin - 4. Wasted sub. We didn't get the ball to him.
Rowland - 5. Didn't get on the ball much.
Crealey - 7. Id start him in replay. Another addition to MF. Caught few marks again.
Vernon - 6. Good and solid when came on. In for donaghy next week?

Questions??
1) McCabe & McKay not used at all, after playing league? Esp with ET???
2) Not good for Raffertys confidence if taken on then off not long after
3) why can we not hold onto a lead?????
4) Why no players with pace taken on in ET, to solely carry the ball against tiring cavan?

Team for replay

Hughes
Morgan
McKay
Hughes
Shields
Kennedy
Forker
JOB
Grimley
Crealey
